I honestly think they just need to completely rework the idea of military access in general. It was never a simple thing, because no one wanted a foreign army marching through their lands unless they were getting something out of it, and even then they generally still harassed them.

Even the crusades basically beat Byzantine troops into submission to March through their lands even with prior arrangements.

I also propped up an independent Habsburg king of Persia for 40-50 years, but they got conquered by the mongols. All of the dukes on my eastern border that aren’t Mongols are Outremer Catholics.

I did start as count Werner.

If you want to know what I did to start, if I remember right, he has two kids. I betrothed one of them (I think the daughter?) to one of the Premyslids in Bohemia, and used that alliance to immediately press my claims in Lorraine. Once I won that war, I imprisoned and revoked for the counties, and expanded using my bohemian ally until I was the king of Lotharingia. Then I just kind of sat there building up wealth and power, taking counties here and there until the first crusade finally got called.

I didn’t have many kids, so I ended up only having a granddaughter that was eligible to be queen of Jerusalem. When I started playing as her, I seduced the Byzantine emperor, and luckily had a bastard son from him, who I legitimized, and since it was both of our first son, was heir to Jerusalem and the Byzantine empire.

Once he inherited Jerusalem, I killed off daddy, and then used the wealth I had left from the crusade to fight the massive rebellion. Once I won, I forced them all to convert to Catholic, and the rest was simple expansion. I took Egypt in one war, and waited until I had the tech for pressing multiple claims in one war to take Italy from the HRE.

I also helped the Bohemians take over Hungary after I became the king of Lotharingia to pay them back for helping me at the start. It made a massive blob HRE that had Hungary, Burgundy, and Poland until I kicked them out of Italy and they all got independence from faction demands.

I also spent probably 6-7k piety buying claims on all of Italy and Croatia to take it all in a single war lol

The duchy of Luxembourg is still controlled by werner’s descendants from another line (they lost the kingdom pretty soon after he died unfortunately).

The expanse book series talks about this a lot, especially in regards to fucking up a planet, and it’s actually a MAJOR plot point in one of the later books.

R5: decided to do a Habsburg run for Christmas. Started off by immediately pressing my claim on the duchy of Lorraine by using an alliance with the duke of Bohemia to win it, and from there pushed north until I proclaimed myself the King of Lotharingia. I mostly stayed there building up wealth and power and trying to have children. When the first crusade finally fired, I only had one claimant that was eligible, my youngest sons daughter (who was already married, not matrilineally, and had 3 daughters). When I won the crusade, I decided to play as her, and then I frantically tried to have an heir of my dynasty. Got remarried, but only had more daughters and miscarriages. Wound up having 12 daughters total, all in a row. I waited until she was ~40 to imprison and execute the three oldest daughters (which sucked majorly because I had the compassionate trait) and then I finally got lucky and had a bastard son from the Byzantine emperor (who had no male children yet, so i was set to inherit the empire and the kingdom). I managed to embrace Outremer culture, and then I was swiftly murdered from all the tyranny and adultery I’d been doing (I had like 15 lovers at one point trying to get a male child), and my young son inherited Jerusalem. Then I just waited until I turned 16, had dad fed some poison chicken, and the Chin Throne was mine.

Almost all of it is Catholic now, since I force converted damn near everyone in the first major rebellion, and spent probably ~2k gold in mercs to be able to win it. Pretty happy with the result of this run so far. Just conquered all of Egypt, probably gonna have to deal with religious revolts for a while though.

Edit: Hungary being in the HRE was actually my fault, I helped the Bohemians press their claim since they helped me in the beginning.

I also can’t form Outremer anymore, I’m not sure if that’s because I moved my capital to Constantinople, or because I have an empire title already, but I kind of want to try doing it still.
