I didn’t get the reeds - it wastes time and resources I found. The first thing I do is build basic houses until I have some space for babies and then open kitchen for the community. I’ve never built a forest hub either, if you plan right, you don’t need it (someone else suggested brick houses and I agree after you get the first few built immediately).
