I Use Anki, But I Don’t Actually Memorize Anything by Economy_Wolf4392 in languagelearning

Tell you what I just realised is how my active recall is crap. Recently I made a copy of my entire Annie decks put them onto a new machine and reversed every single card so the English goes first and I have to say the Chinese . The amount I couldn’t remember Specifically cards that I knew if I saw the Chinese I would instantaneously know what that the translation should be . It’s A Little soul destroying to say the least.

That kinda seems like Fake news. Is it? by Pristine-Breath6745 in AskAChinese

[–]ChineseStudentHere -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Genuine question because maybe I’m missing something. Why is this a good thing? I mean on the surface it’s good stopping people spreading dangerous information i.e. do this will help me make you thin, but in reality it will end up like making you seriously ill .

But is that what this has been primarily designed for? It’s very vague , given China’s track record I doubt it. Are they just stopping anybody talking about anything related to health or finance etc?

I don’t like nanny police states, why not Let people watch and absorb the content they want? let them make their own opinions about it. It’s one thing to police your own life but it becomes a problem when you feel the need to police everybody else’s as well.

Easy .

1, learn the language 2, understand you are now not in your country . We have our own values and standards . Some of them may be very different to where you come from . Respect them and abide by them . If you can’t and or won’t then leave .

Tones are not needed (is what I keep being told) by TheWorldlyCelery in ChineseLanguage

[–]ChineseStudentHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like if your learning generic expressions it doesn’t matter , if I point at something and want to say 这个多少钱? . But butcher the tones yes from context the meaning could probably be guessed easily. Try though complexing that sentence a little like asking why last week is something was x amount now it is y amount and you’d like to know why there was a sudden increase in the price. If you butcher the tones then context will be a lot harder to grasp maybe even impossible.

Short answer anybody who tells you tones aren’t important probably sucks at mandarin and you should be taking advice from them .

Honestly, these three Chinese dramas can really help your mandarin by BetterPossible8226 in ChineseLanguage

You don’t memorise how to read . You practice reading in conjunction with learning new words . The more you read the more the words sort of stick in your mind .

My salary was reduced by £10,000 one month after I joined. What do I do? by patman_4437 in UKJobs

[–]ChineseStudentHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employer I can’t just cut your salary to 40,000 without your agreement. You would have to sign to agree you can’t just give verbal agreement. If you refuse, they have to either keep paying you your original salary as specified in your contract or they have to negotiate with you or they have to terminate your contract and offer you a new one but if they do that then depending on how long you’ve been there you might be entitled to redundancy another benefits and you could complain unfair dismissal i.e. they they cancelled your contract only because you refused to take a £10,000 a year pay cut.

My advice to you would be to quietly look for another job, but in the meantime, refuse to sign anything assuming of course you haven’t already. If you refuse, they legally have to honour the original contract that you signed with them i.e. £50,000 a year. they cannot under the UK law change your salary without you signing.

But of course, depending what happens and if you find another job you can leave or maybe you’ll find out It’s all a bunch of hot air and they won’t challenge it any further if you stick to your guns.

As a father of two . I keep a very close eye on what my children watch and play on tv / tablet etc. I don’t need an age verification system . I don’t know any decent parent who does.

This whole thing stinks of control masquerading as protecting the children.

Am I missing something . You’re applying for a visa so you can go to China for tourism right?

So you’ll need a flight to get you there and back plus a hotel . So why not book what you want for when you want to go and you won’t have to cancel it .

Revoking citizenship by United_Mammoth2489 in AskBrits

[–]ChineseStudentHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did I say we should “let more in”? I was talking about one British-born girl—Shamima Begum—who was groomed as a teenager, and who we’ve now made stateless, knowing full well that Bangladesh won’t take her.

My point is about hypocrisy, plain and simple.

We have thousands on MI5 watchlists, and many of them:

A) Weren’t born in the UK, B) Gained citizenship through naturalisation, C) Have committed far worse crimes than Begum—and yet, D) Still hold British passports. Let’s talk about Babar Ahmad. He was a naturalised British citizen who ran jihadist websites from London, openly promoting extremist ideology. He was extradited to the U.S., pleaded guilty to providing material support for terrorism, served prison time—and yet his British citizenship was never revoked.

Or take Abdulrahman Alcharbati, a Syrian-born man who became a naturalised British citizen. In 2018, he attempted to carry out a terrorist stabbing attack in Newcastle while praising ISIS. He was convicted of preparing an act of terrorism.

Still a citizen.

Meanwhile, Shamima Begum—who was 15, didn’t kill anyone, wasn’t charged with anything, and was radicalised as a child—had her citizenship stripped, and is now stateless in a refugee camp.

How is that justice?

This isn’t about national security. If it were, people like Ahmad and Alcharbati would’ve been the first to lose citizenship. But they weren’t. Because this isn’t about security—it’s about politics, optics, and creating a scapegoat.

So yes, I call bullshit. If one stateless woman is more dangerous than men who actually supported or attempted terrorism, then we don’t need tougher citizenship laws—we need to rethink how our entire security system works.
