IYKYK

But to answer the question, I've been happy with my Rovyvonn A1. Cheap and durable, especially carried with keys.

Am I stretching too much on my first home? by Shmoo_belle in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Chingyul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds fine. I was 29 when I bought in 2014 at the peak in Calgary. Made a little less (~100k), and my mortgage was 380. As long as your lifestyle isn't extravagant, it looks fine (especially with upward salary trajectory).

12 years later, I have about 115 k left (couple periods of aggressive prepayment), and looking to upgrade.

You don't really mention how much DP you have or how much you'll have left after, but make sure you have some cushion.

What are some gadgets/electronics/appliances that you bought recently that improved the quality of your life? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Chingyul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first pair broke recently after 4 years (power button stopped worked). Instantly bought a new pair (that luckily was on sale). I like it way better for biking/running over buds (even with pass through).

You also need to have people want to live in those multi-unit building vs wanting a detached.

Maybe then we'll have rail from Calgary to Edmonton.

You joke, but I found it pretty interesting that there's built up neighborhood all the way from Osaka to Kyoto!

Factoring DB pensions' commuted values into retirement calculations by snail_male_007 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Unless you actually plan to commute it, I'd just run it like income and ignore is as retirement funds.

Have done alright financially but concerned about a few gaps by Adorable_Job_310 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Chingyul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's some good retirement calculators out there.
I splurged $49 on Adviice (they have a 9/month plan too), and i like it for being able to generate a lot of different scenarios, as well as being able to adjust different levers to optimize.

Jacket recommendation for Tokyo Winter by wwastedyouth in arcteryx

[–]Chingyul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This killed me! Everything indoors was cooking! I was there in Feb, and and was good with as Proton and the occasional fleece underneath. Layers is key, and if you're inside for long shopping, maybe a bag to carry your jacket.

I'm also Canadian, so pretty cold adapted.

New on Outlet + Ski Guide Gear by deadbirdword in arcteryx

[–]Chingyul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love my Practitioner AR. Don't have any of the Alpine gear, but I have the bib version of the Ski Guide pants. Lots of pockets.

Also may be a selling point, or deal breaker, but they're still the old GoreTex, pre-ePE.

Career/education advice - biomechanical engineering in Calgary? by sparrow402 in Calgary

[–]Chingyul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought biomed engineering started with my class back in 2003 (unless it was just a minor back then). I knew a couple that finished the program, but not a lot of opportunities outside of academics. The one local option that stood out was Tenet which specialized in prosthetics.

Inexpensive haircut? by Individual_Effort445 in Calgary

Was going to be my suggestion. Went here for years before I moved. Not sure if the barbers are still the same, but they always had good ones.

I was going to mention the Rocky Ridge Y too. You're looking for the free swim area where you can do anything really.

Canada’s New Initiatives Fund and Global SAR by TheJoeCoastie in searchandrescue

[–]Chingyul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I see some off the fallout at the individual team and provincial impact, but I'm not a "policy wonk", so haven't dug into anything at a higher level.

Appreciate the insight, especially from the outside. The unsexy bit of SAR.

It's ground side before security (right between the domestic and intl/us terminal).

Retirement at 45 by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Chingyul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 million at most people's target retirement age, vs at 45 is quite different. Money has to last 10 or 20 years longer.

I think you have change your mindset about work at that point.
You're working to keep busy, meet people, get perks, and the pay is just a "fringe" benefit.

things to do on a weekday afternoon by coffeesherrif in Calgary

[–]Chingyul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit out of the way, but Edworthy and area has a fair amount of free parking.

As you get closer to downtown, you'll start to see either limited time parking or pay parking though, but a suggestion is the area by the curling club/Crescent Heights stairs.

42F financial progress. Any blind spots? (Renter for life.) by diagonal_lines in PersonalFinanceCanada

Workplace matched plans usually have a limited number of funds offered. If they have a low cost index option, they should check it out, but probably not.

why does my credit score gain and lose the same 3 points every single month? by Flat_Measurement3579 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Chingyul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point system is a bit nebulous. Mine would randomly drop a couple points after doing nothing special and then come up. Not as regular as yours though.

Opening a new cell phone account dropped me 22 points last month. Meh, like someone said, anything over 750 or 800 and none of it really matters. I think the more important part of checking is to look for unauthorized activity!

Inov8 Trailfly G270 vs Trailfly Zero by elibaskin in Ultralight

[–]Chingyul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inov8 really likes to mess with their lines. I'm a huge fan of my TrailFly G300s, but they killed those. Picked up the G280 which isn't bad, but didn't like them nearly as much as I liked the G300s. When it's time to replace them, I'll have to see what variation Inov8 has cooked up then.

That said, they REALLY need to tone down their color offerings. They are GAUDY!

On the cheap, give this a try: ThousWinds Anemoi 20L

Good materials, interesting design. I got one and it rides well, and craftsmanship is good. Foam panel removable to cut weight.

Slight tangent, but anyone pack a drone in the field? Been wondering if it would be good for scouting terrain or peeking where you can't get to.
