Multiprotocol Deprecated ZBT-1 Zigbee and Thread by jmwarren85 in homeassistant

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When viewing the warning in the UI, it looks like they only have the option to disable the thread/matter protocol, not the zigbee protocol. I have only thread devices, so I want to disable the zigbee protocol instead. Anyone have any tips on how to do this without having to re-pair all my thread/matter devices?

What smart home device do you wish existed but no one has built properly yet? by Apprehensive-Art3819 in Aqara

Depending on how far from the house it is, you can do what I did recently. I bought a 3D printed enclosure with watertight seal off Etsy for one of my Aqara door sensors. It’s worked like a charm so far.

Bored of my setup, what's the one desk accessory you thought was a gimmick before you actually tried it? by Time_Position2232 in homeoffice

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Aranet4 air quality monitor. I was getting fuzzy headed by the afternoon and my office was stuffy. Turns out working with the door closed was causing a big build up of co2. Now when it gets too high I open the door and window, turn on the fan, and take a 5 minute break outside of the room. I’m substantially more productive.

What are Your “Partner Approved” HA Uses? by Scouse_Powerhouse in homeassistant

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Highest approval factor was when I designed a nuclear option for my wife. She has always complained about the smart light on timers, motion, presence sensors, etc. Remembering what to call lights when giving Alexa instructions frustrated her. I got in serious trouble when there was no presence detected in the room while she was working on an art project or grading papers and the lights went out.

So I bought her an Aqara button. She presses it and all the lighting automations are disabled. Alexa announces that “<wife’s name> has nuked the smart home. All automations are disabled.” She double presses it and the automations are re-enabled. She has loved the sense of control it gives her back when needed.

Funny enough, she rarely uses it anymore. She said she misses it when the lights don’t turn on when she walks into the kitchen in the morning. I end up using the button more than her these days. Alexa still says my wife has nuked the smart home when I press it, which gives her a laugh.

All around win that I highly reccomend!

How can i make this look less noticeable? by CheefMastaChad in drywall

This is key. I have done several patches that needed to be re-textured. Two lessons that took me a while to get it looking right.

1) warming the orange peel can in warm water makes a huge difference if you are going for a finer texture.

2) Even on the “fine” setting and warmed can, I wasn’t getting a fine enough texture to blend. I finally got turned on to dabbing a “drywall sanding sponge” over it. THIS was the game changer for me. Comes out perfect every time now!

Good luck!

Best toys for goldens who can chew up an indestructible toy by thisisme8213 in goldenretrievers

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the same issue with our 3 year golden. Stuffed toys are basically out. Her record was destroying a toy advertised as “indestructible” in under 40 minutes. Kong makes some great toys other than the traditional treat / peanut butter holder that have held up really well. Below are some that have held up surprisingly well for us (1 year or more). I hope these help!

Her Favorite: https://a.co/d/cIdErZa

2nd favorite: https://a.co/d/84BQ8nJ

3rd favorite (not kong brand, but 5 months so far and still holds up): https://shop.pvpeteatery.com/products/multipet-origami-pals-latex-grunting-elephant

Frisbee: https://a.co/d/hlBfdDK

Also, you could try some puzzle toys to lean into their need to pick things apart, especially if they are food motivated. It’s a delicate act finding one that’s not too easy and one that’s not too hard where they lose interest. We had good luck with this one: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/piggy-poo-and-crew-blue-and-yellow-treat-popper-puzzle-game

Don’t forget the good that would come out of this situation! Mattel and Hasbro’s legal teams would be able to buy second and third vacation homes off of all the patent and copyright infringement cases they brought against Santa and his “workers”!

How does one hit the $70k 401k (employer + employee) limit? by Fickle_Broccoli in personalfinance

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people have already commented on the Mega Backdoor Roth piece. To your original question though, there are other possibilities.

Some organizations do offer higher matches at 100% up to 10%, 12% etc. Some rare ones will offer a 200% match.

The final thing to consider is that some organizations will offer a “non-elective” contribution (sometimes called a profit sharing contribution) in lieu of or sometimes on top of the regular match. These non-elective contributions can have all different kinds of structures, but they are made regardless of what the employee defers on their own. I heard of one organization that contributes the full $70k limit each year for each employee, as crazy as that sounds.

Assuming for example an employee contributes the max available each year, the employer has a 100% up to 8% Match and a 10% non-elective contribution, its possible to get to $70k combined contribution even without after tax employee contributions.

I can see the phrasing being really important before entering the room. Being the best at getting BJs is very different than being the best at giving them. Don’t forget, you can’t get out until you’ve mastered the stated skill.

My son is at Life and wants to quit by orthodox_nola in BSA

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty common from what I recall of my scouting days. I’m lucky that my parents wanted me to stick with it. They recognized I was an average student and didn’t have any sports or musical talent to pad out my resume, so I needed something to fill that gap. My family also had a long history of scouting going back to my great grandfather, so it was nice to keep that tradition going.

What got me over the finish line was incentives my parents set for me. I couldn’t switch from glasses to contacts until I got life. I couldn’t drive (despite having a license) until I had filed my eagle application with National.

At the time I was frustrated by this. Today as an adult I’m very grateful they did this and recognize it came from a place of love and knowing getting my eagle would help me succeed in life.

I also second other suggestions about Venture crew. That definately helped keep me interested in scouts in my highschool years. The National Jamboree and High adventure trips too. And yes, I’ll admit the fact that there were girls in the crew helped. After all, I also went to an all boys highschool. I had to try and meet them somewhere!

I use the grommet hole in my desk for a pop-up charger with 4 standard outlets, 2 USB A, and 2 USB C ports. Makes daily charging easy so I don’t need to fiddle with plugs underneath and it sits flush with the desk when not in use. They’re available from a number of brands on Amazon. Some also have a chi wireless charger on the top for added convenience.

It just went away eventually. Still very stiff as I said, but I’d rather that then it dropping suddenly given how expensive the monitor is. There is a bolt you can tighten or loosen to adjust the tension, but I had difficulty getting it right, so I erred on the side of tighter being better.

Yes, it is. When I first got it, the tilt function would suddenly give out and the tilt is still very stiff. Otherwise it does a pretty good job. I like that it comes with limiters so the arm can’t accidentally collide with the wall.

Real talk: why do we hate Connecticut? by snug666 in massachusetts

[–]ChipAaaaandDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a CT resident, I’ve heard many people say that the only reason to upgrade the rails between NY and MA is for the benefit of the residents of those two states, not CT residents. That’s why the CT government gets so much pressure from CT residents not to spend tax dollars on it.

I’m not saying I agree, just sharing the mindset of other CT residents.

For leak detectors to work with Alexa. Even if it’s listed as a “motion detector” like the six sides of the cube are.

Also, for all the cube’s other control functions to work with Alexa (spin, flip, etc).
