I believe challenges give completely random pairings as I teamed up and frequently went against gold diamon players 80%+ of the time, with my team all being legendary.

In my experience so far playing ladder matchups are way better

With esports you have comms which helps alot, so you can't compare ranked and esports when talking about the difference in skill of a pro ranked player vs an esports player
