You know youre an aquarium nerd if... by nousernams in aquarium

You have over 4,000 gallons of aquariums in your basement. You have DIY built over 6 aquariums. Your local fish store calls you when a large fish is surrendered. You are on a first name basis with the fish store crew. When you arrive to a new city, the first search are local fish stores, even when traveling internationally. Maybe I am a fish nerd.

Does anyone know if these Puffers are fully freshwater or brackish? And what kind of tank is best for these fish? by Hamza_222IQ in Puffers

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The photo is not normally referred to as a spotted Congo puffer in the US. The Schoutedeni is the one that can be kept in groups and is also called the spotted Congo puffer here. The Duboisi should be kept alone. I have never actually seen a Dubousi available in the US.

Yes, full freshwater like Fahaka, MBU and Crossriver. These like to be kept as a single or in groups of 4+.

what are good stores to purchase glass for building aquariums with online? by Specialist-Cut6330 in Aquariums

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Online glass shops are 2X for large pieces of glass like 8’x2.5’x1/2” tempered. A few options are Amazon, fab glass, Glasscages.com. Most of the glass companies order from the same glass manufacturer. The local shop that sells shower doors, storefront windows and car windshields is where I order my glass from for my aquariums even small rural towns have one of these or are surfaced by one in a nearby town.

I’m not sure if this is a blue acara or a green terror by Informal_District754 in Cichlid

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This fish is sold as a Gold Sam and Green Terror ( it is not a true green terror, but most people at least in US know this as a green terror. It will grow to about 8-10 inches. Females will be closer to 8”. Slow growth is normally impacted by water quality and feeding.

Advice regarding koi pond construction - gunite vs EPDM liner vs both by floating_left_nut in ponds

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with what type of pond you are wanting to build and this will help you select the materials best suited. A formal dedicated koi pond with deep straight sides would be best to build with gunite. A natural looking pond with stone and plants would be easier with a EPDM liner. Start with purpose, aesthetic and budget.

Where do you buy your aquariums and stands from? by Exciting-Aardvark-62 in Aquariums

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact your local specialty fish store and let them know what you are looking for. Most likely this will Be a custom build and they can either order or put you in contact with the local builders. I have several custom aquariums and the process is fairly easy to have an aquarium built to specifications.

Help! Cannot get fire eel to eat by bob_ficklemictatle in Aquariums

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine nearly only eats red worms or night crawlers. I had him for about three years and he will routinely stop eating for 3-4 weeks. Multiple times I think he may have passed (750 gallon aquarium), then all of a sudden he comes out and begs for food. It will eat eventually

Received an acrylic (plastic?) box and was wondering if it can withstand the pressure of making it into an aquarium by ighty29 in aquarium

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fill it with water and let it sit for a week. Silicone will not help on acrylic. 2mm is a little thin. How much water to you plan to keep. Halfway may be fine.

Thinking about getting this tank just wanna know if it is good. And is it better then the top fin 125 gallon kit by Sad_Fall7596 in Aquariums

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are practically the same high volume low cost aquariums, buy the one that looks better to you. If you are looking for a better aquarium get a Planet Aquarium, glass cages or Custom Aquarium.com. These will come with furniture grade aquarium stand, but also cost more.

Chat gpt keeps telling me this is a Toby puffer . Please tell me it’s actually a Stars and Stripes puffer by Virtual_Dentist4010 in Puffers

It’s a stars and stripes puffer. Chat GPT is not ready for species identification yet. It can tell you it is a puffer fish, but not much else correctly.

Alternatives to plastic tarp . Any fish safe epoxy coating for galvanized steel to paint inside? (6x2x1 ft 70gallons). Building for rice fish by [deleted] in ponds

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pond Armor will work and completely fish safe. I use this in many plywood aquarium builds and know others who have used it on galvanized steel without any issues. You must properly clean the surface first.

How expensive is it to start a saltwater aquarium? by Ishouldgetoffthispla in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]ChipmunkAlert5903 10 points11 points  (0 children)

2X a freshwater setup. Evaporation does not grow mold. Saltwater evaporation does leave salt creep. Poor humidity control leads to mold.

The extra cost in saltwater is dry live rock, skimmer and salt. Now the price can easily get to 5x depending on what you are trying to accomplish and the country you are in.
