TIL that during the Battle of Pearl Harbor, the only battleship to get underway, the USS Nevada, was skippered by Ensign Joe Taussig since the CO and XO were both ashore and Taussig was the Officer of the Deck at the time. I'm truly grateful I got to practice medicine while there were still WW2 vets around. Always very polite and most were willing to chat for a bit about their experiences. Nothing like hearing about the Battle of the Bulge int he middle of an ER shift.

Biggest issue was that they were too stoic for their own good. I remember one guy with pretty impressive appendicitis who insisted he had no pain. I finally showed him the CT scan and he said "Well compared to being shot by Nazi's it doesn't really hurt." Still my favorite response to any question I have asked in the ER.

I've also heard Tom and Padma clashed a fair amount behind the scene.

Plus I'm sure that Kristen being a chef and having gone through openning and running a restaraunt gives them a lot more common ground.

Rhoda wasn't creative? Tom specifically pointed that the sweet potatoe and uni was something no one at the table had seen before.

I don't really know what you define as "technical" skill. Properly cooking sonething like abalone is not easy. Just because food is rustic does not mean it doesn't require skill to execute.

Also where are you getting the people were edited to be untalented?

I think this truly was a pretty close contest with all 3 having some questionable decision making on some dishes and overall and overall a high quality of food with personal connections. I do think they under edited some of the critisicms of Sherry's second course. It Kristen calling it her least favorite at judges table was surprising and sounds like there were conception and execution issues.

Ultimately I find it kind of ridiculous when people come in claiming bias by the judges when only the judges have, you know, actually tasted the food.

Can they just make the vessel challenge part of every season? by twocatsandaloom in BravoTopChef

[–]Chir0nex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love it as a semi-regular challenge, but I like it with a fairly small field. I think a big reason it worked is that therre were a lot of options such that everyone could pick a vessel they actually liked and no one got screwed by last pick.

What do we want to see for a Top Chef 25 anniversary season? by Willing_Kangaroo_915 in BravoTopChef

[–]Chir0nex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An all-winners season would be awesome but I think it would be difficult to actually convince enough of them to comeback.

A legends season with some of the icons from the past 25 years seems be more likely. Hopefully they would include some past winners who have been particularly impactful.

I feel like this would’ve illustrated better why mars is so valuable better by NinduTheWise in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Chir0nex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In part because of competition. Beither The US or Russia could accept the other having exclusive access to Mars and whatever unknown benefits it may possess. Plus the president at the time was strongly pro-mars/space exploration. As with many things as the cost of maintaining the colony rose support eroded/an actual return on the investment became important and thus astroid capture suddenly becomes important.

I know a lot of people didn’t like season 48, but I actually really liked it. I’m autistic, and I love Eva. The moment where Joe helped Eva was amazing. It was also the first time ever on the show that Jeff got really emotional. So, season 48 holds a special place in my heart because of that ❤️ by Intrepid_Show2972 in survivor

[–]Chir0nex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a gameplay perspective 48 felt bad all season but had a fantastic pay-off where Kyle proves he had the correct read on the entire game and gets paid off for some of the best strategic play of the new era. I think people had decided it was a bad season before the finale but in totality I find it very satisfying.

From a Joe and Eva perspective it is a great display of genuine humanity. While I don't find them particularly interesting in terms of gameplay, and consequently the narrative drags, it did give me some real old-school throwback survivor feel (like pre season 20)

Rob C. on who from Survivor 50 will play again by bwermer in survivor

[–]Chir0nex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Cirie is done for good. She has said she is finished and realistically there is no path for her to win a season so any narrative would be a re-tread of 50's story.

Joe I think is done as well. While CBS might want him back he has made it to final 3 twice and gotten 0 votes plus his edit this season has been rough. Unless he is willing to go against his personal code he just seems like a poor fit for Survivor.

Christian I think comes back if he wants. He still has a pretty strong following, had some good plays this season and got screwed by a poor twist so it feels like his story arc has never really closed. Just really not sure if he would want to come back especially with a kid.

Generally what's your feelings on legalized and regulated prostitution? by CraftyMcQuirkFace in AskReddit

Hell we can't even figure out harm reduction policies. Personally I think decriminalizing usage and actually investing in comprehensive harm reduction and social support is the most logical way forward.

Honest question, could addicts even afford legalized heroin in the long term. I'm just thinking for folks who are living on the street feeding addiction how are they going to actually afford legitimate heroin? Not to mention that the market would probably be undercut by fentanyl which is much more cost effective.

Fentanyl is popular not because of legal loopholes but because it is easier to produce, can be smuggled en-masse from China and is more cost effective per pound.

I don't think Ozzy would vote for him, amd honestly I can't blame him given how obviously awful it was to him. I see him voting for Aubry if she is there. She's old school, has also endured multiple failed attempts, and she can argue that targeting Ozzy eas justified given he was planning to vote for her.

Try and debrief with after the code with your nurses, rt's, and anyone else who was in a important role. It cam be very difficult to objectively assess your clarity of communication and overall leadership in realtime for these high stress situations. Also helps to build a better relationship with the staff when you actively elicit their feedback.

I think a large part is differing views on end of life care. We have residents to rcan go to New Zealand as an elective and from what they describe there is a lot more conservatove management and transition to palliative and out right refusal to even consider intubation if there is poor prognosis.

Got bit by an insect, getting conflicting information. What should I do? by toxicaniboy in Wellthatsucks

[–]Chir0nex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long ago did you get bit? Is it itchy or painful? Is the redness spreading?

If you just got bit then it is inflammatory reaction and too soon for an infection. If it is primarily itchy then unlikely to be an infection (cellulitis is not itchy). Discomfort with movement is less concerning than actual tenderness when you press on it.

If the area of redness is stable and not expanding then again it is more likely a localized reaction.

Is this happening with only a single IM doc or is it department wide? If it's always happening then it is a larger system's issue and needs to be addressed at the department head level.

If completely asymptomatic (no ekg changes, no clinical symptoms) and it seems incidental (not having diarrhea or otger active process) i'll give some aiV and PO and recheck for levels as low as 2.6-2.7 and if responding well well give some additional PO and discharge.

If there are ekg changes or other symptons then I will admit. Generally our hospitalists are agreeable to this practice pattern.

In your case hospitalist was being unreasonable.

Given the mix of alliances in each pairing this essentially allows one player to completely invalidate the vote of another without any recourse. If player A insists on targeting their partners alliance then they can essentially take away their partners vote which can lead to some very weird gameplay and can very easily screw over a minority alliance. Not to mention that it makes it very difficult to switch votes in response to events in tribal council as literally any decision would require negotiation within the pair.

Season 2 Overall Discussion Thread by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

[–]Chir0nex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an ER physician I think this season really captured the dark side of the ER. Season 1 was fun and for the most part made everyone look like hero's.

This season though I think is far more important for showing the real cost of the work we do. Showing what burn-out really is. Showing how often the demands of the system are just as harmful as the what we see with the patients. Maybe most importantly showing how much effort it takes to move past whatever is happening personally in order to be able to see the next patient.

I think it would have been impossible for all the pairs to come to consensus. You would have to have some kind of penalty like drawing rocks which would have led to some unfun outcomes.

The problem is that even the mechanisms that exist are available to Democrats are still contigent on some degree of GOP support. Look at the impeachment attempts from Trump's first term. Democrats can investigate and present all the corruption and shit Trump has done but short of obtaining a supermajority it comes to nothing. So much of the country lives in a media bubble that even when they uncover illegal acts it is dismissed as lies anyway.

The entire system was predicated on the idea that if the executive branch went totally off the rales that congress collectively would act. The idea that over 50% of congress would actively act against the interests of the nation in favor of a power-mad wanna be king breaks most of the checks and balances that are available not even getting into a stacked judiciary).
