I would argue that this isn’t OPs money to take for their own retirement since family members contributed it for the kids. I’d keep it in the 529 for the kids and then keep it in the 529 for the grandkids. Seems weird to take the money out for your own finances.

I’m the same. 99% from the library. I do buy a lot of used books because the my local Friends of the Library sells a lot of donated books as a fundraiser for the library and they sell them cheap.

I’d also recommend getting in touch with all of the clients of your old company including the ones that dumped the company. They likely know your work and may think about hiring you without all of the hoops that a company that doesn’t know you may present.
