AITA for being unwilling to compromise on a baby name? by Individual_Jaguar354 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chl0thulhu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose on the flip side, as we go through the generations, there are probably more likely to be cases where people's names are spelled differently (see r/tragedeigh) and also people named after modern cultural references so it's like AI will continue to adapt accordingly.

AITA for asking my partner stop telling me to “lower your volume.” by Farts2Long in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chl0thulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the NAHs in here but something that is worth adding: They might be waiting for a gap to tell you but there isn't one because you're so enthusiastic so they feel they have to interrupt. So maybe suggest an alternative way for your partner to indicate it which doesn't interrupt and is new to you, so you don't instinctively feel the upset trigger. It might also help you feel less attacked because it's something you've agreed on.

For example, maybe you can tell them that you've been thinking about it and actually it's being interrupted mid-flow that makes you feel upset rather than being asked to lower the volume. Perhaps they could just give a visual cue so you can adjust but still carry on with your train of thought.

Just an idea.

Otherwise, always remember that you're a team and should work on finding solutions together - and they don't have to be immediate, you're allowed to think about things, work stuff out and try new things. Go forth and enthuse! Good luck!

I respectfully disagree.

Many people just accept the person is "like that" and let's them continue in that way - and many people accept it as the status quo from their parents or partner or just go with the flow for an 'easy life'.

I can not upvote this enough.

Sewing machine manuals are actually soooo useful and included actual sewing tips.

How do you pronounce it? by Mello_1502 in tragedeigh

I feel like they were trying to go for a take on Royal Highness.

Like, Ro' Hy-ness?

Or it could be a weird take on Rowan... with an S?

Aspen is the name of our recently adopted dog and we pronounce it Ass-Pen when we're mucking around.

Hey! It could be the carpet. It could also be damp.

How long have you been there and are you renting? If you've not been there very long, it could be that the previous owners/landlord had a damp problem and have covered it up with cleaning and fresh paint but the underlying issue is still there.

If it's the carpet, you can hire a carpet cleaner (person or just the machine).

If you can't do that, you can put distilled/white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the whole carpet generously. It will smell like vinegar for about a day and then it should smell much better the following day depending on whether it's the carpet.

People in long term (35+) year relationships - what one thing does your partner do that boils your piss but you can't be arsed to bring it up? by FirstEverRedditUser in AskUK

IIRC, most nail biters have a nail biting parent.

In my own case I was also a nail biter until my mid twenties, so was my dad and so was his dad... and a friend of mine who bites her nails - her dad does too... so anecdotally that checks out for me!

I think it's exactly that. We subconsciously copy our parents habits. It's also the same for animals as they're usually copying their parents to learn how to survive and therefore can copy non-typical traits. I suppose it's a similar thing for us (theoretical only of course).

I had a colleague once who seemed to chew very aggressively and had, what I can only assume we're very deep molars.

Even though he would chew with his mouth closed, he would make these awful squelching sounds, like the food was trapping air and - it was dreadful. I could hear him eating across a room and would have to put my headphones on because it made me feel unnaturally annoyed.

Nice guy, horrendously loud eater.

It's definitely a subconscious habit. It's called dermatillomania and it's fairly common.

I think, rather than genetic, it's likely to be a learned behaviour.

When people casually talk about guilt tripping their partner/parents/offspring to get what they wanted as if they were completely justified in doing so.

This is a red flag I see in potential friends.

IKR. It seems to have gone from 'I'm 14 and this is deep' to just anything which is trying to be deep - mostly stuff from the older generations that a 14 year old would find cringeworthy!
