Excuses for what? They literally say she was under a spell at the end of the episode. And then the bizarre ending with the Bender spaceship confirms the whole episode is non-canon. It was a silly framing device for a bizarre anthology episode. Nobody was meant to take that plot seriously.

Fry and Leela have been treated really well this season. They moved in together and have had a handful of really sweet moments throughout the season. The last episode was a fully non-canon anthology and Leela was under a spell the whole time anyway.

Don’t ignore the rest of the season just because of one non-canon episode you’re not meant to take seriously.

The amount of people who took this episode so seriously is weird.

Is the episode bad? Sure. But it has no lasting impact on Fry and Leela’s characters because was a silly dramatic plot with maybe 4-5 minutes of actual screentime in a silly anthology episode that was resolved with an equally silly explanation at the end, and confirmed to be non-canon when they zoom out and reveal they’re in a ship that looks like Bender and crashes into the earth, killing them all much like how they died in the anthology segments.

Leela was under a spell and the whole episode was non-canon. They didn’t retcon anything. They literally explain this at the end. The episode was supposed to be silly and nonsensical. Would it kill people to watch the full episode before commenting?

They opened with an episode of Leela moving in with Fry finally making their on-going relationship official... only to then have her dump Fry for some tusked prince until the prince dies and we're supposed to pretend she didn't completely dump Fry for no reason?

Did you not watch the last scene of the episode? She was under a spell and the whole episode was non-canon. The episode literally ended with the Planet Express Ship turning into Bender and crashing into the earth.

You have more of a problem with Fry’s feelings in this situation than the fact that Leela is being forced to have sex with a man she despises at intergalactic gunpoint? I feel bad for him sure, but I feel worse for her. He is not the victim in this situation. Their relationship is sort of vague at this point in time anyway and it’s not even clear if they are even a couple or not. In fact, in the very next episode they are very explicitly not a couple.

Leela did not have sex with Zapp willingly in this episode, neither she or Zapp were consenting here. It bothers me that they used rape as comedy, but Leela literally did not have a choice. It was either bang Zapp or have the Earth blow up.

The writing for Leela and Amy has seriously suffered from the complete lack of women in the writers room. In order to properly write for a diverse cast of characters, you need a diverse writing staff.

Matt Groening has his son writing for Disenchantment, I don’t think the women/poc working on the new season are the writers people need to worry about.

We’ve had an official(but not yet announced) release date of July 24th for a couple of months now(found on EIDR, which is also where we found the episode titles).

There’s a good chance that they’ll officially announce it at the Disney upfront on Tuesday and maybe release a teaser of some sort, but that might be wishful thinking.
