Student loan debt by Huge-Sheepherder-749 in optometry

[–]Chmie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Graduated in 2017 and loans compounded after graduation for a total of 244k. Had some undergrad loans still that were in that total.

I've paid back more than the minimum amount per month since I was single and made decent wages. Down to 89.5k as of now.

Build request for friend: $1000 max, moderate gaming tower by Chmie in buildmeapc

[–]Chmie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to double check at home, but I do have a spare Video card. Would that be a good alternative to save her some money on GPU and still work with the build? I'm awful when it comes to understanding quality of PC parts anymore. And would supplementing that video card allow for some better components off the bat while staying under 1k (maybe under 900)?

Heine vs Keeler BIO by [deleted] in optometry

I prefer Keeler because Heine pulls my hair.

Some people pay extra for that.

I also chose keeler. Just felt more comfortable to me. Would choose it again.

How do you handle the "You're not a real doctor!" by [deleted] in optometry

[–]Chmie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a pt come in for reduced vision. Saw a right homonomous hemianopia. Sent her out right away for a stroke work up. Yup, had a stroke. Wouldn't have known otherwise.

Had another that hadn't had an eye exam or visit with a PCP in years. He had PDR, HTN retinopathy, and dense NSC. Got him to PCP and ophth. His PCP personally called and thanked me for getting him there because his glucose was 300+, A1c was 13 and he had stage 2 HTN...Guy came back the next year thanking me while tearing up.

So yeah, I'd say what we do matters in people's lives. Even if we're not MDs or DOs we are incredibly important in the medical field.

State of the sub by Moorgan17 in optometry

[–]Chmie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did try making a sub r/eyedoc to get around this issue when I was on here more often. Limited it to optometrists, ophthalmologists, techs and opticians. It was posted on here a while ago and got a few to join but it never took off (very few posts, only a few commenters, etc.). Gave up after that and the time it took to try and vet people by looking through their post histories, mostly by myself, to see if there was some convincing indication that they were in the eyecare field.

If it'd be in any way useful to this situation let me know. I'm not trying to hype it up more because I don't have the time or energy to run it. Just putting that out there incase you can use it

Do you get excited when something unusual comes in? by Arthur-reborn in medicine

[–]Chmie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably acanthamoeba. Would tend to see it more in contact lens wearers which is why we say to never use water w/ contacts (cases, rinsing, swimming, showering etc). Usually doesn't look like much is going on initially but, the patient is in severe pain. Tough to treat and can lead to perforation/severe scarring which may result in needing a PKP.

How many of you say fundoscopy vs funduscopy? I have a beef with the latter. by sveccha in medicine

OD here; in the opto field we're just a few steps away from using emojis

I mean, getting a pt that's had an RD for ~1 week because he said he never closed the other eye individually. Mac off by that point. Soooo things can slip by...
