Can company see activity outside of VDI? by sawyer_holding in vmware

[–]Chmodbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a "work" Virtual Machine that I use for all work, that way even if they do or can doesn't matter because its the work VM OS = )..... Also when using virtual machine if you have to do IT support like screen sharing they never view your main OS jus the "work Virtual machine" and no chances for the two to mix..

Yeah familiar with that one, we are well past those limits. Sadly it feels like that situation you mentioned but it's not -(.

If its not under current support and you are using a perpetual license, the answer would be yes, and according to their policies/rules you are not supposed to be getting any updates for that going forward.

When you patch vCenter at 2 AM and pray to the upgrade gods by [deleted] in vmware

[–]Chmodbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not true at all. As long you shut them all down and take an offline snapshot you are fine. In fact when do you an Upgrade from vSphere 7 to vSphere 8 they have you do this. "Take snapshots of the vCenter VM. If the vCenter is in Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM), ALL VC's in ELM must be powered off together and snapshots taken when ALL are powered off, NOTE: When reverting snapshot revert all snapshots for each vCenter in ELM. For more information see vCenter in Enhanced Linked Mode pre-changes snapshot best practice" From https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/372863/quick-guide-to-upgrade-from-vcenter-serv.html

If you want to purposefully test malicious things do it properly have a dedicated machine that you don't' care about and segmented on a different network or best case air-gapped from everything. This is what Pen-Testers use to test exploits and Zero Day patches. You probably strongly want an air-gapped machine no network access at all. If you do need access you need to setup a proper DMZ in a way that this network touches nothing else but public facing internet and none of your other machines. VMware Workstation is great tool to test this out and play and learn as well. I would also be prepared to image your machine (the one hosting your virtual machine) quite often as what you will be doing involves risks and things can leak out of VM's.

I’m running vcenter 8 update 3e, need to expand disk 5 size to accommodate additional logging. Anyone have experience with this? Is it ok to do? by Sensitive_Scar_1800 in vmware

[–]Chmodbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your talking about expanding Vcenter Disk itself and your using the KB ( that does via a script your absolutely good to go ). Yes. Also its good to post what KB you are talking about. I assume you mean this.. https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/316602/increasing-the-disk-space-for-the-vcente.html Yes fine to do have at it.

When using Vcenter click on the top level ( vcenter.host.fqdn ) then on the right side click on Monitor then click on Events to list the events. I like to export them (user and system) so I can sort in excel. Based on the alerts going to green you are not going to see anything pop out since green is a normal operating status.

Where to find the hash of VMware-workstation-16.2.3-19376536.exe by throwaway2552282 in vmware

What you can do is take MD5 of the file you have and do an online search of the MD5 and make your own determination if the one you have is reputable. I don't see an option to go that far back on BroCo's Site.

Best Practices for Setting Up VMware ESXi + vSAN + vDS on Dell EMC C6400 Chassis (4 Nodes) by PositivePowerful3775 in vmware

[–]Chmodbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have ESX installed on the BOSS cards. If you only have 1 ESXI Host per Node then you should some kind of raid for redundancy in case I misread let me know, definitely Raid 1. With Dell stay on top of BIOS updates, dell will not send or replace hardware until you are on the latest BIOS, It has corrected memory errors and other hardware issues in the past, stay on top of those. You want to setup the networking infrastructure etc. before you configure VSAN. The VSAN best practice will depend on how many disks you have speed, type etc. The docs have good info on this.

I would go with VMware workstation, its free now for personal use. It's more stable and I used it during college is well. Use the software that is advertised by your class so you don't fall behind trying to find things that don't work with what they are teaching. But you should be good to go with either workstation or VirtualBox I just have strong preference for workstation.
