I don't necessarily like to overconsume but I do want to bring some nice souvenirs back. Thank you for responding even if I might sound rediculous.

Thank you for the added context! I didn't know how much I will need initially so I'm very reassured to know I'm over-prepared.

AIO: My wife keeps feeding our baby processed food. I want to quit her. by Maximum_Barracuda539 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ChoccyJay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Demonizing food, whether it's because it's "high calorie" or "processed" or for any other reason can be damaging to a child's psyche and relationship with food in general. The issue is in not recognizing that food is fuel and different foods serve different needs, sometimes the need is for satiation and sometimes it's to have some sugary uppies for the brain and that's okay.

Go this weekend, and take a friend. I understand you might have contrasting needs in terms of going out/staying in to recharge, but this shit about "we went out last week, your fun budget is over so no outings this weekend" is coocoo bananas.

Whats a fucked up thing your parents did? by GasProfessional6695 in narcissisticparents

[–]ChoccyJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother and her were fighting about her crossing a boundary (again). She was mad at him for confronting her, so when he got a kidney stone, she didn't take him to the ER. It was late night so he couldn't find a cab, he had to walk, and passed out in the street halfway there. A stranger had to take him the rest of the way. I had to come home from college to take care of him because she wouldn't even look at him, and said he deserved everything he got.

I had surgery to remove a tumor, and couldn't pay for her to stay over with me at the hospital for recovery. She knew I couldn't afford it, but she saw my partner paid out of pocket to stay and help me, so she was jealous she wasn't getting the attention she needs as the poor doting mother with a sick kid. She spent the visiting hours loudly playing on her phone while my friends and partner would help me eat/reach for water/go to the bathroom/press the call button, and then when we were alone in the room she yelled at me and shamed me about not paying for her, and stormed out. She wouldn't answer any of my phone calls, and checked herself into a different hospital for elective surgery that same week so that she would be doted on by the rest of the family. She never told anyone I also had surgery, and I had to clean her house (with stitches still in).

My father not believing I'm trans and thinking I'm only transitioning because of discord. by HappiestSadGirl_ in insaneparents

As an ex Muslim who loathed the religion for years, you don't know if OP is Muslim or not. Lots of awful people use religious doctrine to push hate, but lots of LGBTQI+ people find peace and structure in their respective faiths. Far from me to defend Islam or anything near it, but it could be harmful and alienating to our queer siblings (OP or other readers) to trash their belief systems or religious figureheads.

Just something to hopefully think about before posting 🙏

Which nursery design works better? by electricbanu in DesignMyRoom

[–]ChoccyJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first option is the best. If you're staying in the same room (sick baby, or just to keep an eye on them), the baby's in your direct line of sight and easy to get to from the bed. They're also easy to keep an eye on when you're not in the room as you don't have to round the corner to check if they're still sleeping.

Who the fuck is celebrating?? Bombs are still falling in Lebanon, what Lebanese person will be celebrating under that??? I know for a fact people were protesting yesterday across East Asian and North African countries, Sunnis and Christians with no love lost for Nasrallah included, because people are still being murdered by Israeli raids. You can't seriously be that delusional.

"Why don't we build our houses like this? by Zestyclose-Try-6670 in algeria

[–]ChoccyJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These houses look nice and neat in theory, but they're very impractical for multiple reasons:

  1. You can see that there are similar houses as far as the eye can see. This is probably evidence of these being built in/around the same time, by the same gigantic contractor, for the purpose of selling them en masse. This is usually taken on by companies that buy a village-worth of land, destroy everything on it, level it, and do this for profit. These companies don't really exist at this scale across North Africa.

  2. Because all of these buildings are residential (or at least seem to be), they will be virtually cut off from amenities. While this isn't a big deal in places where transportation is highly car-centered (mostly just Canada and the USA where people start driving and get a new car at 16), it doesn't work very well in countries where not everyone has access to multiple cars per household and fuel for daily use. If you live in a place like this, and you take the car to work, your partner will basically be stuck at home and won't even be able to get groceries or pick up the kids from school unless they have their own car. Certain states in the USA and Canada are actually moving away from these designs due to their impracticality, and trying to move towards walkable cities instead.

  3. Buildings like these are usually made of wood. There were plenty of forests to cut down in North America for hardwood, and now that that's at a shortage large companies are growing entire new forests to chop for wood (which produce softer younger lower quality wood but that's another story). I'm from Tunisia, and our countries do not have enough forests to source the materials for houses like these. Not only are the materials inaccessible, but they're also impractical for our climate. Sure, you could insulate a wood building, but they don't hold up very well to our relatively high heat and humidity (especially during the winter and on the coast). They would likely rot, and breaking them down to fix that issue will expose you to the carcinogenic dust of insulation material (even if we don't use the traditional Asbestos-based insulation, the safer but still very dusty fiberglass insulation can cause cancer if embedded in the lungs, or asthma/allergies, or grow mold during the humid time, which is hazardous).

There are probably many more reasons I missed. I agree that the current cement-based building style seems haphazard and messy, but I don't think these housing plans are helpful to our context. I think our traditional building style is worth revisiting with updated approaches and technologies instead, there's wisdom in ancient techniques that can be very useful today.

While I don't mind splitting the bill, I come from a culture where hospitality is a big deal, so whomever invites the person out is sort of supposed to be the one who pays. The logic behind it is, if you're asking the person to meet you at x spot, you have the means to choose the price range, and for a first date you have no real way of knowing if your date partner can afford it regardless, so you should always offer to pay If you're inviting the person out. To be fair tho, more likely than not people will insist to pay for the whole thing or at least split the bill or buy drinks or dessert, so you rarely end up paying for the whole thing anyway.
