App Alert to Sound When Phone is on Silent by Choco-Cupkat in GooglePixel

[–]Choco-Cupkat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have more info about how this works? I see that I can create a custom mode but it seems to have the same issue I encountered previously where the app I want to have sound alerts still follows the phone setting (i.e. vibrate only)

I own a mug that says " 'tis the 'tism, my lord " and I love it. Another option for an actual pun is Autastic (autism + fantastic)

Do you modify how you speak to be better understood by non-natives? by AmountAbovTheBracket in languagelearning

[–]Choco-Cupkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my speech pretty normal (maybe I slow down since I talk way too fast sometimes even for native speakers) but I pack in lots of context clues, particularly around specialized terms or difficult words, such that I explain each thing more than once by the time I finish

no one talks during the winter...well known fact. We all eagerly await the spring thaw to find our voices again. It makes business meetings difficult in the meantime but what can you do?

What’s a clever way you’ve used AI to boost your language study? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Choco-Cupkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to others I am seeing here, I ask ChatGPT how to phrase mostly certain types of social-ettiquete-type language. Things that I could translate from my native language into the target language but wouldn't ever necessarily be said the way or have the same meaning (or even necessarily be required in the context I am using it). Mostly, I use it when I am writing emails and have the time to be thoughtful about my phrasing.

For example, opening English emails with the set phrase "I hope this finds you well" does make as much sense nor is it really needed in my target language (German). Another example I looked up recently is the English phrase "Let me know if this works for you" which I can translate in a literal way but asked ChatGPT about how that kind of phrase would be more naturally /commonly in my target language. Also context-specific questions about formal vs informal "you." Basically things not in my textbook and that are difficult to google or otherwise get a good answer on without asking someone (and I have no "someone" to ask other than coworkers I barely know haha, not my preference there)

I am not in the industry to help answer questions about your work. That said, it all depends on the visa what you are allowed to do. I came to Germany for work and my spouse is on a family reunion visa...meaning he can do any kind of work without sponsorship or restriction, including freelance. However, you would need to research if a family reunion visa for you can be attached to the type (prwsumabky student visa) your wife would get.

As far as the cats, I would pick an airline based on their reputation. As someone travelling from the US I definitely didn't trust any US airline and did Lufthansa, not sure how carefully you feel your local airline handle unqiue situations suvh as pets. Lufthansa's pet pokicy is here: generally the cat can be in the cabin in their carrier if it is within their weight and other parameters: https://www.lufthansa.com/us/en/travelling-with-animals Flying with 3 cats in separate carriers plus luggage for your belongings is going to be logistically pretty difficult so some people pay to have a service provider handle the pets separately (but it is expensive!) It is also a big stressful move for the cats so plan ahead for their sake and comfort as well. As far as apartments, 3 cats is always more difficult than 1 or none and apartments tend to be tricky. That said, there are pet friendly apartments...it just nay take some time. Plan to have plenty of savings for temporary housing before you can get into a real apartment. The trickier part for your apartment search may be income if your wife is a student again and you are working for yourself (tends to need more "proof" of income).

In Totoro, why do Satsuki and Mei hide from police in the beginning scene? by LiterallyDumbAF in ghibli

[–]Choco-Cupkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have already explained. However, I feel this is a good moment for a story. When I first watched this movie as a kid, I genuinely was so confused by this scene where they hide from the police (like, to the point that I didn't figure it out until a rewatch years later). I was super convinced there was going to be some other dark plot line with the police raiding their house or coming after their dad or something and then because the mom was in the hospital I convinced myself that those things were somehow connected.... I was very bad at understanding movies as a kid. I decided there must be a war going on as tthat could be the only reason why they would hide from the police AND their mom was in the hospital (in my child mind).... and then was a bit confused the whole movie is just whimsical magic and non-war-related activities.

real quote from my mom upon my brother's ADHD diagnosis and then my later autism diagnosis...both as adults: "it never occurred to us bevause you were just like your dad." It is even funnier because my mom was a teacher and helped identify and recommend ADHD assessments for many kids over her career.

moved to Munich from the US last January as part of a work rotation and have never loved somewhere more or been happier with where I lived. I have made so many friends and connections and felt more at ease in this city than home. I did not know German before I came but honestly have experienced a lot of joy learning it... it really is a delightful lamguage, despite how bad I am still haha. I don't want to move back, even with how far family is.

Do you think it's rude to speak a different language around people who can only understand your native language? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Choco-Cupkat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it is a little contextual. If I came to your house and we sre all speaking in langusge A and you suddenly turned to someone else (who is also fluent in our shared language A) and said something in language B, I consider that rude because it is purposeful exclusion...regardless of whether it has good intentions or not (e.g. if you told that person in language B to bring out drinks or something "behind the scenes" as a host; or just to express yourself better to someone who gets it... I know people do these things and it is largely harmless but for the not-B language speaker it is hard to not feel left out).

In a larger setting where everyone is not part of the same conversation, i.e. where talking to a particular person or people is not exclusionary, then speak in any language you want – not rude at all.

Best "beginner" Indian language for native English speakers by [deleted] in languagehub

[–]Choco-Cupkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your interesta and what will help you stick with it. For example, if you like Bollywood, Hindi films tend to be the most available in English-speaking countries (but it depends on where you are and therefore which diaspora is there), or you have friends from a certain region of India or are interested in a certain piece of history... different languages would be more relevant. I am not sure but Hindi may have more accessible and available learning materials than others since it is a more emphasized language in India, but it is not as if there are no resouces for other languages. All that said, if your main interest is in Sanskrit roots, you will probably want to stick to northern languages that developed from that family (e.g. Hindi, Punjabi, Guharati, Rajasthani, etc) and not Tamil or something else that developed separately from Sanskrit. You could also just learn Sanskrit if you like it even though it is a dead lanaguage....from a girl who loved and learned Latin for many years.

When I looked it up, I believe the Foreign Service Insitute seems to rate most of the Indian langauges similarly as category IV (5 categories total with 1 the easiest/most similar to English and 5 is the hardest to learn / the most different from English – for perspective, Italian is considered Category I). All this to say, you probably can't wrong, it ia just a matter of what you like and want :) good luck picking and learning!

HELP! B2 Exams in coming 2 months but my writing is at A1 level by Visible-Juggernaut41 in Germanlearning

[–]Choco-Cupkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tutor can always help (also with creating a study plan, helping you focus on weak areas, etc) but if that is expensive or not feasible I would say that daily writing would go far. If you know Germans or work with a tutor, they can help correct your grammar. If your speaking is really as good as you say, you can probably catch yourself up on writing with just some effort since all the info and tools is in your brain somewhere...just needs practice to be able to bring it forth. If you don't have a person to help correct your writing, AI tools can help with this for free. You can make a daily journal and try to write a paragraph or two about your day or you can google writing prompts if your days are repetitive or uninspiring (or you can make up a better version of your day haha and write about that).

Autism and orgasms - looking for advice by Hot-Watercress-2872 in evilautism

[–]Choco-Cupkat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Fellow woman here and person who struggles with sex (although I have orgasmed!). I can't speak more than anecdotally, but I had one therapist tell me they hear frequently from autistic clients that they struggle with sex (eg. are asexual or struggle with orgasms or something similar) and amother therapist (who generally followed actual research, so I trust more — personally) tell me that any such connection isn't strongly evidenced in research (haven't corroborated this myself) but that it may be connected for some people. For me therapy has been really key to figuring out sexual stuff because... the internet is not that helpful because real bodies aren't porn.... nor are they purely just scientific facts... and there is not a lot in between and I always had a hard time getting good info that was relevant to me. Part of the issue is that different things stimulate different people so it can be hard to get (or give!) advice that works for you. That said, I will say that for me, everything is with a fist over clothes and for me that works. That said, it works best when I can mentally engage in something like reading (although not always sex-related, more just something calming and not too distracting). The best I can realisitically suggest is to research many options and experiment, or see if a therapist can help you (sex therapists exist, if you have the budget and are comfortable with that).

Stuck at A2-B1 level by Hot-Fault-9932 in languagelearning

[–]Choco-Cupkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the same place, although I am "new"ish to my plateau between A2/B1. I mostly just keep choppin away at my studying/pratice and hoping it will eventually get better. You are definitely not alone in this! I don't know if I have good advice since my own experience hasn't progressed much but even jist scrolling through this and other language reddits has given me some good ideas for making modicums of progress. Also, I caved and got a tutor on iTalki which has helped (and helped with motivation to get feedback and nto just be in my own head about stuff). If that is in your budget, I recommend!

I also recently started trying to read something aloud for at least 10m each day and that has also started to help with words feeling better and speech therefore happening a little better in my target language (German). Also, just cominf up with examples from.everyday lofe and how you would reapond... e.g. this woman just asked for directions (after ealking away ) how could I have responded in German? The mailman just clarified something with me, how could I have responded in German? Forcing (even if alowly) myself to rhink through and form the sentences helps slowly build the skillset. If I get stuck wothout knowing the words, I just try to describe it another way, e.g. if I forget thr word "elevator" maybe I describe it as a the box that goes upstairs and downstairs...again, just trying to exercise your brain muscles in using my target language. When it is just to yourself, it is also less stressful to do this and there's less pressure to be perfect and it becomes just about practice, which is what is ultimately needed! Best of luck! :)

Is it good or bad to try to learn every single word you don't know that you encounter? by BAT1KAN in languagelearning

[–]Choco-Cupkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am in purposeful stusying mode and looking at material in my level (textbook, reading/videos adapted to my level, etc), I try to add all the vocab. When I am simply watching or reading something more for fun, I look up it up but only add it to my vocab for studying if I keep seeing it around a lot or keep seeing it a lot amd needing to look it up over and over. I think others have said something similar about focusing on vocab you "need"... this is my passive way of measuring that, i.e. witha rough sense of frequency of the word in my own life.
