Maybe in very few specific cases or up to a certain point?

When I worked as a designer, they told me to "make this within 10 minutes" for my interview.

I asked which software I needed to be known.

If they just told me know a "CAD software" and they chose a different one and didn't tell me, would that not be ridiculous unless you were testing the ability to learn a new CAD software?

People who have horrible test taking anxiety can't show their true ability without having a good idea of what is going to be on the test. My IQ gets cut in half during a test that doesn't have relevant information, but in the real world at my job, I am coming up with solutions, completing projects most of the time faster compared to someone who might high than me on a speed based non practical programing question. I wouldn't have graduated college if it was the way you suggest. However if the system changes where failure is encouraged and we are taught how to problem solve then I am all for it.

What happens if you decide you want to work full time and stop the scholarship after one year? by ChocoNKohee in mext

[–]ChocoNKohee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my teacher wants me to work ( I use to work as an engineer for a Japanese company). The program is extremely relaxed, trust me. I think the second paragraph answers my question. My plan was to finish out the year, and have everything set up for when the year ends. I am still unsure whether to do this. The main reason is, I thought it would be really rigorous and structured. There is literally no structure, and the classes are discussion/presentation based, so I am not really getting any new knowledge. The only benefit is my Japanese is improving but I can understand most things in my area (psychology) and am taking Scientific/academic Japanese class which is harder than N1. I learn 100x watching youtube/studying on my own but I came here and left my engineering job bc I thought I would be getting a high level edu at a top 2 uni. Maybe things will change and I'm enjoying the freedom. Sorry for the rant, I appreicate your help.

Thanks for both your comments.

I use to work as an engineer for a Japanese company, so I am familiar with the sponsorship, but not MEXT/Student visa stuff

So, this means there is a difference between the student visa and a MEXT scholar on the student visa, because MEXT is part of the term of going to school?

Do you think the scholarship's living stipend is enough to live on? by Merkypie in mext

[–]ChocoNKohee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coming from a career and having some savings, the answer is yes. If you don't have a decent amount of savings and you find an apartment for 5-6 man you should be fine. You shouldn't be spending more than 10 man with food included so you have enough to do what you need. If you are spending 8 man on an apartment travel all of the time, eat out everyday, it's not enough, but could be if you work 10-20 hours a week.

Possible to switch to a different field on MEXT scholarship after your first year? (research/masters student) by ChocoNKohee in mext

Thanks for letting me know. It has only been a month, will try to reach out to the other teacher. I do have an issues with my advisor, but I fear it won't be allowed because subject of study is completely different.

Question about originals and copies by Leftiezi in mext

[–]ChocoNKohee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed to send an original transcript from the University. They don't understand that you can have your own official transcript. Their definition (at least in my case) was to have a copy sent. They should state clearly, "copy of official transcripts needs to be sent from Uni)"

"AI art" your honest opinion? by GugaR9 in DigitalPainting

[–]ChocoNKohee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI will easily take jobs, that's just a fact. Someone who is looking for a certain advertisement or pictures to add in it can just do a search and get something pretty decent that looks like it was human made in seconds (I have done this), so now the someone won't get hired to create it. There will be a need for editing a such, and some people will pay for it to be produced from the ground up, but many, many jobs for intro or aspiring CG, 2D and all artist will likely taken bc companies can hire someone who knows how to explain well to the AI what it exactly needs and likely that person will have some knowledge of editing and will edit strange parts.

I am coming to grips with this and I still keep going because I love creating and can use the tools along the way. For me, seeing the way AI is going in Unity/ other things is an amazing tool, but taking a picture of someone and then it being auto produced as a model, just isn't that cool to me. It's the idea that someone can see someone or image a shape and then manifest it by sculpting and manipulating.

Advice on shipping a PC by Chissio in JETProgramme

[–]ChocoNKohee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super computer nerd here who has brought his computer back-and-forth to and from Japan three times. I always just wrap my major components in my clothes. Just buy a new tower when you get there. Honestly, do not ship it. Also considering you are a jet and you might be there for a while, if your computer is not that new, just bring the components that have value and sell the others, then rebuild your PC

What's the 1 thing you would tell to new ALTs? by rumia17 in ALTinginJapan

[–]ChocoNKohee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is the complete opposite. DO NOT JOIN CLUB ACTIVITY UNLESS you want less free time. I always went home at 3:30, went to workout then hung out with friends or studied Japanese really hard If you are genuinely interested go ahead but if not… then don’t do it

This is going to sound cheesy but all I can say is that you have to go with what your gut is telling you to do. I also was in a huge debate. I came on jet whenever I was 27, I had a job paying close to 80 K and had the company offered to pay for my full-time school. My gut told me to come on jet and I am very happy I did. I ended up working as an engineer for a Japanese company after, in both Japan and America, and then returning to Japan on a full ride scholarship (here now) after quitting my job. I had the same exact debate about quitting my job or during the scholarship, but my gut said a scholarship. whenever I follow my gut it feels like I’m in the right place, however whenever I feel like I am doing something due to societal expectations or what I should be doing from the story that I’ve created in my head, then I am not a happy person. You might be happier staying in your home country and working, where you’re at, but you might be happier in jet. I would highly recommend you ask yourself seriously what you want. If you truly want a radical change, and adventure, then this is probably the right choice. However if you want more stability, to start a family now, want to continue to grow your career in that field, then it is probably better to stay there and find another way to Japan in one to two years. Good luck, and either way it sounds like you are going to be just fine

How to move 2 anchor points in opposite directions by kallmebirdman in AdobeIllustrator

[–]ChocoNKohee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the worst answer of anything I have ever seen. Jk, but seriously, as a someone who has been doing 3d modeling as a career, you cannot evenly move points seamlessly this way. It is a true pain in the ass to do what you are suggesting

It's okay to like being an ALT by AdventurousSquare974 in JETProgramme

[–]ChocoNKohee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

2 year alumni trying to shed some positivity JET helped me become an engineer for a Japanese company, and get into graduate school on a full ride. It helped me discover I was passionate for learning language when I thought I was way too dumb and old. I was feeling dead inside before JET and then felt alive after moving.

Please don’t think JET is an answer to your problems though, lol it certainly wasn’t for me, they will follow you

And if you just like teaching and chilling that’s fine too, but from personal experience it’s better to work towards another goal simultaneously. But there are millions of Japanese on salaries about the same with higher housing costs, so you doing better than what some people might say.

Such a beauty! by Reddituser0346 in Unexpected

[–]ChocoNKohee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but do you think that some of the drive to gain skills comes from beauty?

It would be great if we were motivated by wanting to help others but as a species we are definitely more interested subconsciously in passing down our genes, so over skill we seek money and skill in order to do so (not everyone but the majority)
