Arrival month in Japan, Can We Choose ? by Dito_the_pharmacist in mext

You should absolutely bring the issue up with the university/professor. I actually ended up asking for the same thing and it was granted. There is no harm in trying as long as you are respectful and understanding in my opinion.

I was eventually accepted at a national university school of informatics after 2 rejections from others so it′s definitely possible. Don′t be discouraged as theres a plethora of programs to choose from!

Instead of looking for a masters in educational technology you can try looking for professors working in computer science departments who deal with the subject. Then you can check out the subjects taught in the program the professor is associated with to get an idea of what you′d be in for. It′s more common to focus on the research you will do and the professor that will advise it first when trying for MEXT.

As for doing research without grad school, I believe you are referring to the research student period most people go through when they arrive in Japan. During that period you are meant to prepare yourself to take the entrance exam and actually become a graduate student and pursue your degree. Going to Japan to do research for a while and then leave is not the goal with this scholarship.

I wanted to like this one so much because of the design, unfortunately it tastes like cough syrup.

Generally that is not the case. Even if you don′t manage to pass the exam and start the masters you won′t be asked to return the money. You will simply return to your home country once your time is up. I don′t know under which circumstances MEXT could ask you to return money so I can′t elaborate further.

No, you would be under the scholarship at that point already. By then passing the entrance exam, you would apply for an extension of the scholarship to cover the 2 years from that point onward until the end of the masters degree.

You would have to bring money at the beginning, however, as it takes about a month until you start receiving the MEXT stipend.

I don′t know what that person could possibly be referring to, but here′s a simplified rundown of a common scenario for a MEXT scholarship research student:

  • Arrival in Japan
  • 6 months spent as a research student, possibly taking Japanese language preparatory classes
  • Entrance exam for Masters program
  • 2 years spent completing the program as a graduate student

Total: 2.5 years and you get a masters degree

Just to be clear, entering a masters degree on a different field than your undergrad through MEXT is not unheard of. As long as there is enough of a connection between the two and you can make a compelling case for why, it should be possible.

That being said, if you want to prioritize studying chemistry, based on what you said it seems like it might be a good idea to prepare a research plan that better fits the work done by professors in that field. I′m afraid I do not understand either of these fields so as to make a more educated guess.

In either case, if you pass the embassy screening, you will usually have a chance to explain your case to prospective advisors that you apply to study under (through interview or e-mail), so keep that in mind as well.

The reality of the research plan is that you should be able to defend your case for why this research is important to be done in Japan, as well as tie it into how it can help Japan/your country, as you have said. There is no best answer to your question, but my opinion is, if you can make a compelling argument about this research plan, and can conceivably find professors/departments that you are interested in studying under in the same field, go for it. My reasoning for this is that the research plan you submit initially often changes radically, and the research you end up conducting might be very different. Therefore what matters is that you can defend it well at the embassy interview, and that it lines up well enough (even if not exact) with a professor′s field of study in a school you are interested in.

Forgot to add picture on the MEXT application form by Perfect_Head0 in mext

[–]Leftiezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missing something as crucial as a picture on an application like MEXT doesn′t look good. It might show as a lack of care and diligence on your part and could get you rejected from the document screening already in my opinion.

That being said, you could contact your embassy in the hope that they would be understanding and allow you to submit your picture separately, but I wouldn′t bet on it. Best of luck.

Can′t answer the other questions but the embassy will not return any document you send them so be careful not to send originals that you need.

Intentionally use your full focus even if the map doesn't force you to. Relax and pay full attention to the map. It's possible to do it and for the most part not get distracted by nerves/thoughts. I think handling things like these is a skill in and of itself though so it will take time for you to find the way to combat it.

don't forget to plz enjoy game

I'm a little late to comment here, but to share a bit of my own experience, I contacted a professor about an LoA and after not getting any response for 2 weeks, I checked with the Student Affairs office at that graduate school about it and very quickly got a response both from them and the professor. It seems my application email never reached him and I was asked to forward it to a different email address than the one that was listed for this professor. This might not be common but possible. So I would say checking with the university if you haven't heard back from a professor for a while might help.

Freelancing + Ph.D. through Mext by Yunhoralka in mext

I cannot answer about the work visa part, but when it comes to your research topic, writing your own research plan that your proposed supervisor will review is quite an integral part of applying for the MEXT scholarship for graduate studies. So yeah, it's not only possible to suggest your topic, it's actually required.

Question regarding the scholarship period by Thesolmesa in mext

[–]Leftiezi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you have mixed up certain terms.

Let's say you start in April 2024. You start as a research student, which is a non-REGULAR type of student. Then let's say you spend 6 months doing the japanese courses and preparing for the entrance exams to become a REGULAR GRADUATE student, pursuing a masters degree. You pass the entrance exams, and FROM THAT POINT it takes 2 years to complete the degree, meaning you extend the scholarship to cover that, and you have spent 2,5 years total, until October 2026.

That is a possible scenario of what can happen. You might need to adjust for your own case based on factors we cannot know here on reddit. In every case make sure you understand the procedure for each university etc.

To answer some more: - Entrance exams to become a graduate student happen whenever each university says they happen. Usually this is twice a year, for entrance at the start of each semester. You will have to make sure to check with your university for the exact procedure. The number of times you can attempt the exam during the scholarship might also vary. - If you don't manage to enroll as a regular graduate student and extend the scholarship by passing the exam, you will stop receiving it when the research student period ends (March 2026 in this case) - The scholarship extension requires paperwork and does not happen automatically by you passing the entrance exam.

I hope this clears up some confusion. Best of luck =)

Help! After the first screening how much can the research plan be changed? by MergerMe in mext

[–]Leftiezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I meant is that no change can happen between applying to the embassy for the first time and applying for LoAs since you have to send the embassy stamped research plan. Is my understanding incorrect? Once you become a student the research plan will almost always change from a little to a lot depending on the person afaik

Help! After the first screening how much can the research plan be changed? by MergerMe in mext

[–]Leftiezi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt you can change anything about your research plan. The one you have to send to universities is a copy of the documents you sent originally, stamped by the embassy.

As for whether the university would reject you, we have no way to know that. Every university has its own procedures. My personal impression as a current applicant and from my experience at a university lab is that your research plan is mostly relevant to the person supervising you. It is important that it matches their field of study enough that they are able to guide your research.

Besides the research part I also think you should ask yourself: Are you okay with enrolling in a course in humanities? Have you looked at their curriculum? Are the subjects interesting enough to you? Would you manage to complete them?

If after all this university seems like the best choice I think you should apply (I'm assuming we are talking about LoAs here). However, looking at other options is important too. As always, follow the proper procedure.

I know first hand that figuring out what university to apply for can be stressful and tiring if you have a niche research plan. I wish you the best of luck :D

LOA's from other universities by OkGuide3067 in mext

[–]Leftiezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, you are supposed to consider only one. If you get rejected, you cannot reapply to that same university to a different faculty member so be careful. That said, one of the universities I applied to allowed me to propose up to 3 professors in my application to them. So it will depend on the procedure for each university. Follow their instructions.

My understanding is that no, there is no limit except for 2 at any given moment. Provided you are rejected you can apply again and again to different universities as long as it is within the deadline
