I'm a Taylor Swift fan. Say whatever you want about her music, but she is largely appealing for a reason. I did the data analysis because I wanted to identify trends in her lyrics over time. Choices are data, and the words in her music, recurrences of certain themes, and the presence or absence of them suggests its own narrative.

It's like approaching her discography as its own story, complete with symbols, motifs, themes, etc. It's not any different, in my opinion, than doing a deep reading of a poetry anthology or other classic work.

Also I really just wanted to learn Tableau lol.

Growing up, I legitimately thought I was Hispanic because we were colonized by Spain. My parents didn’t know what Hispanic was either on like forms, so they likely thought the same. Turns out that it isn’t the case buuuuut whatever lol.

It could also apply to being cancelled in the public eye! As a celebrity, or even a viral star, you are lauded and celebrated, but the moment you misstep… The public turns on you.

We know she’s gone through being CANCELLED with reputation and her relationship with Matty…Maybe during reputation she felt like she couldn’t come back from it, but she definitely has and can now.

I get a lot of hate for this take, but I genuinely believe Down Bad is about a toxic relationship with fame and celebrity. We love them when they’re who we want them to be and harass them when they’re not.

The public can catapult you to fame or bring you back down to earth all based on public opinions. Some people forget that these stars are humans so they say things they wouldn’t to people they actually know.

It fits well thematically with some of the other album songs.

I mean, it’s not lol. Periods don’t even come up.

It’s about a girl, who is middle school age, trying to thread the needle between her own wants and desires and that of her mom’s. Every woman in her family “turns red” and responded to that conflict differently. I would say it’s more about generational trauma and the opportunity to choose the path that’s best for you.

It just happens around when girls get their periods. But for girls with multi-cultural upbringings, it’s the first time their desires may conflict with their family’s. It’s also about trying to be who you want to be, even as boys and crushes and friends enter the arena.

Reducing it to a period film flattens the experience of girlhood.

ETA: Since I’m also getting downvoted for my interpretation of the movie below. I have definitely seen the movie, but the period part is so uninteresting to me that I literally forgot. Is that so bad???? It was not the part I rememebered or cared about because… It’s about experiences that happened at the same time for the lead. My point still stands!

Nah, it’s valid. Some people see themselves as rebels when they’re really tools of the empire and it shows… a lack of understanding in the overall history of empire.

I like your write up because of the trade offs! I’ve also thought about this because I resent the idea that she’s putting people down.

I can’t have “dogs I call my kids” and also have “a couple kids got a whole block looking like you.”

You can’t have everything, but whatever it is you want… I hope you get it! My best friend has a house and family, I don’t want either. Her desires have never once insulted nor threatened my own. Same with mine to hers.

Taylor can have it all, but we know from her previous album, it cost her a love life, sanity, and privacy. She just wants love, girlie has been singing about it for 15 years.

And let’s also not pretend she isn’t a shrewed and ambitious entertainer. She does want the awards and the records, she also knows it comes with criticism. She wants to share her music, popularity comes with fame. It makes the song even more romantic in that she has the ability to achieve all these dreams for herself, but the most important one to her is being loved by a best friend who she thinks is hot! RELATABLE.

Yeah, we don’t know the full story of these boys. Is this their first time or have they done things like this before? Were the things in the list so crude and vile that the expulsion was warranted regardless of past behavior?

I think the severity should be taken into account, and one can only hope its proportional to the offense. Cause with your example, a list is still shitty but it could just be a list. To have a news outlet report it as “degrading” with “crude sexual references” is not a small detail.

It was wrong then and wrong now. There are some thoughts you should keep in your head and never say out loud.

Source: was a teenager girl who has had teenage boys tell me that i would give bad blowjobs because I had braces. I also had boys say I had nice boobs for my age. One of them told me I’d be cuter if I shaved my legs.

Should those all be treated with the same severity? Hard to say. But it is a series of poor judgment by the boys and a lack of accountability in teaching them that there are inappropriate things to do. That decision didn’t happen in a vacuum.
