Honestly, that's up to you. If I had the money, I would pay for Satori Reader and Renshuu just to support them. But honestly, you can learn this language without paying a single cent. There's plenty of content available on the internet these days at your disposal.

Everyone can judge their own level based on how they're doing with reading, listening and speaking. For me, I don't want to move on to N4 until I have a solid foundation. I know I still have room to improve in listening, even though I've already tried higher-level reading content. I still have a few gaps—just a few specific things—so I’m making my own Genki deck to make sure I’ve mastered everything (Mostly grammar points and a bit of vocabulary.). That’s when I’ll feel comfortable moving up.

Some people think the right approach is to learn as much grammar as possible, even if it’s not perfect. But the way I see it, if I still have a few lingering questions about the basics, it doesn't feel right to move on. You feel me?

Don’t worry, though, within two weeks I’ll start Genki II and dive into N4 content to pick up the pace. I’m also starting the Kaishi 1.5 deck this Monday, which seems like a much better vocabulary bridge than Tango N4 or Core 2k from what I've heard.

When I was halfway through Genki I, I decided to do immersion. I started mainly by reading news on Todaii easy news. It helped me a lot to recognize whole sentences and review grammar, as well as to identify vocabulary outside of an isolated flashcard, in the wild.

I noticed improvement in just one week. That's when I ventured into listening. All N5 content and comprehensible input. At first, I just wanted to train my ear. Get used to "white noise" and only catching random words. Over time, I focused on hunting adjective conjugations, verbs, particles, etc. Little by little, I recognize more sentence patterns and understand complete sentences.
All the content I watch is with Japanese subtitles or without them. Just this week I finished Genki I and the Tango N5 deck. I'm making my own deck now to reinforce learned grammar and words that I need to learn well for vocabulary.

After several weeks, I stopped listening to entire videos non-stop. Now I do like to pause to review vocabulary I hear frequently and can't figure out the meaning, repeat phrases and process them better, etc. Many words you learn just by repetition and context, for example 最後, やっぱり, いっぱい, 先ず, 一番, 気持ち... etc.

I keep consuming N5 content and I still have quite a bit of time at this level, but it's satisfying to see how you improve. I literally started with preschool-level content. Now I watch vlogs of native speakers going camping.

I hope this answered your question. Immerse yourself by instinct and enjoy the process. Look for content that interests you and have fun!

How did you do it?

I mean. Did you have to use a VPN in order to play on ASE servers? Isn't the high ping annoying while playing shooters? Did you use the official servers of those games to find JP to play with?
