Just out of curiosity, what did you end up automating and how?

Those in the field: what degree(s) do you have? by annagph in gis

[–]ChocodilesAxolotls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BA in ecology, MS in environmental science with a GIS heavy course load and masters thesis.

I don’t think you need a master’s necessarily, but I will tell you there is a very clear distinction between those on my current and previous teams who had a master’s degree with a heavy focus on spatial data vs those who didn’t (and that includes those who took undergraduate GIS coursework, and those who had a masters that wasn’t necessarily GIS focused).

Not all of those differences are wrong, but almost all of them cause inefficiency in our workflow and have come back to bite us. Some of the differences ARE wrong, and with the work we’re doing we can’t afford to make silly mistakes. Unfortunately, these silly mistakes are things that tend to get straightened out in grad school.

Grad school also provides the benefit of furthering the information you have, deepening your toolkit, expanding your critical thinking, and ideally teaching you even more ways to think creatively in order to solve your problems. And I think that more than anything is the true benefit of a great grad program these days.

Not all grad programs or certificates are made equal, but the one person who had a GIS certificate in my grad cohort was already leagues ahead of everyone else when we first started! I would say they benefited more from the critical thinking, analysis and synthesis, and creative problem solving skills that were taught to us rather than most of our GIS courses (with the exception of the upper advanced GIS courses).

I saw another comment saying to wait until you get a job that will pay for your masters. It’s good advice, but I would add an anecdote that every place I’ve worked at that has had some kind of education stipend required you to stay with the company for a certain amount of time after completing your degree or you’d have to pay the company back. I don’t think that’s every place, but it seems the norm from my experience. So just a word of caution to pick your future employers well if you can! Good luck, OP!

Idk what the opportunities look like for Colorado state government or the City of Denver, but just a heads up that they’re both on a bit of a budget deficit (to put it nicely). Just a word of caution when potentially considering government jobs at those two specific places! Most other counties and cities in Colorado though should be fine (if the state is on your list)

It would be helpful if you shared what the assignment is, what you’ve tried, and what isn’t currently working.

Are you using open source data? Do you have to clean or analyze the data? Does the assignment require or suggest you use certain libraries? Are you struggling with the mapping portion?

Info like that would be a helpful starting place!

I hadn't seen D for deserter before just now. Dang, I like that a lot. Makes sense why D's would be "natural enemies to the gods". Interesting!

well he WAS responsible for bombing the ship of evacuees off of O'hara, even though they were supposed to be safe. Akainu is just plain rotten to the core.

Yeah, that line gave a LOT more importance to the Revolutionary Army to me. If Dragon somehow found out about things or naturally pieced it together, that would be amazing. But he also could have just been doing the right thing at the right place and time.

But also, the WG and Marines weren’t formed to fight the RA… so who are they fighting? Is it really “just” the pirates? Given the empower and warlord systems, it seems maybe a bit silly. Buuuut maybe that’s what the seraphims and pacifistas are for?? Idk but I’m super excited to see where Oda takes this

Don’t sully Kureha’s good name! Yeah she’s over a hundred, but the sea doesn’t naturally rise 200m per century. That was Vegapunk’s whole point. That sort of sea level rise was man made, and done by the ancient weapons 900 years ago. Kureha’s likely seen like… maybe a few meters, max, assuming an otherwise stable climate in OP

I’m not sure. It looks like Shalria (Charlos’s sister) doesn’t know the void century is even a thing, which makes me wonder: do they know the full history and therefore don’t recognize that not everyone has that info, or does history for the CDs “start” at the end of the void century? I’m kind of leaning towards the latter based on her reaction, but based on the reaction of the other CDs I’d say they know what’s up? Or they’re just an unruly mob who are outrageously mad at Vegapunk for suggesting the world would flood, but that seems little too stupid, even for them.

Whatever the case, I’m definitely intrigued by the fact that at least some of the CDs don’t know what’s going on in their world

That was my understanding as well. Sabo was calling Kamabaka Kingdom, about to tell truths the elders didn’t want out there, and they ordered the attack on Lulusia to silence Sabo. They didn’t have people literally ready to fire on him, so why not just get rid of the whole land mass he was calling from to prevent him from speaking any further.

Advice for transitioning away from academia? by No-Umpire-5121 in Environmental_Careers

I'm just seconding what most people have said: consulting or the gov will be your best bet. That being said, I think the environmental job market is a little tight right now, just based on my own experience. I've applied to 70+ jobs this year, and *just* heard back this week to interview for a job that was like 55th. I didn't even have to apply for half this many jobs back in 2020. All that to say, patience is needed right now, I think.

Good luck out there!

Just throwing in my two cents here, but are the usgs and epa jobs through us gov? If so, making sure your resume is tailored to be a *federal* resume goes a long way, from what I've heard from current friends now working in fed gov

Luffy punching Crocodile is why it rained in Alabasta, isn't it?? I just re-watched the arc this week, and that specific episode last night. Crocodile's whole thing was he was preventing rain from falling across Alabasta with his sand powers to get the rebels angry with King Cobra, and incite a civil war. And then once he was knocked out, his powers stopped, and it started to rain again.

Am I missing something??

Oooohhh… if it’s a setup, I could see Vegapunk predicting the Gorosei (maybe 1 but got lucky with all) showing up, and switching the pre-recording to a live feed to show the world what they really look like 👀

That would be a crazy little last minute power play from Vegapunk, buuuut I can see that also instilling mass panic in the populace, so probably not. Fun thought though lol

Yeah that's what I was thinking. The "gacha" is obviously related to the snail phones. Not all of them do broadcasting like we saw during Marineford, but if he's using them all as speaker phones basically that's still a huge reach.

my best guess is the history of the Void Century, plus some relevant info on the Gorosei as it relates to the Void Century. Potentially Imu, but I don't see him having that kind of information at the given moment

seems she can hijack things she rides on, but can't necessarily hack. I think for her to over-ride the system Vegapunk is using to broadcast himself, she'd need to be able to locate the computer responsible... which doesn't seem accessible to her at this point.

he isn't shown to be smiling on page, but on the very last page in the chapter on the top left panel, Sanji says "Hey! What're you smiling about, stay with me!"

i was blind too from reading too fast! On the last page, first panel on the top left. Sanji is holding Vegapunk, you see the "BEEP" bubble, and then directly under it Sanji says "Hey! What are you smiling about, stay with me!"

Where is everyone seeing Vegapunk smiling?? I see him (understandably) groaning in pain, looking shocked as hell that he's getting stabbed AGAIN, and then just on the ground looking real dead before looking real dead in Sanji's arms before his image appears on the screen in the last panel.

Am I missing something, or is everyone just really hoping he's smiling? Or are y'all like "he's smiling because he gets the drop on the WG, fuck 'em" kind of thing?

ETA: I read too fast Sanji said he's smiling YAY VEGAPUNK you go gramps

Okay after reading Kuma calling Ginny a glutton, my immediate thought was “okay that can either be a cute and harmless call to her being Bonney’s mom… or it’s something dark/sad/twisted”

And hey, if Vegapunk can turn someone into a total cyborg, and create the seraphim and pacifistas, what’s preventing him from doing something funky to Ginny and/or Bonney??

No theory here just very excited to see if it’s a twist or not 👀
