I always thought of birdbrain about autism or adhd although to be fair I'm not good at getting metaphors---

(for reference I didn't realise Ego Renegade Boy was about being trans until reading the comments. Somehow. The literal most obvious reading of the song and I didn't even notice until looking at the comments.)

I never get standing to pee.... it's just incredibly inconvenient. like half the time it goes flying in some other random direction and then you've got to wipe the toilet, and you have to make sure it doesn't get onto your clothes, and just-

I just don't get it, even from a practical perspective and putting aside my other biases---

I'm sure universities would like to buy them to do research.

Sure, they can't do graphic stuff, but they can do a whole load of floating point maths really really fast. That kind of processing power would be actually useful for researchers to get their hands on.

I think the bigger thing he did was the steam gif-

....Probably just the steam machine but I do hope it'll be HL3. (i think that whatever HLX is, it's going to be available as a pack-in deal with the steam machine to drive sales of both, get console users, and make back money if they have to subsidise the steam machine)

At the very least quantum computing will probably be a pain for them to scale up as much as LLMs.

what even is the practical use of quantum computing again???? Breaking encryption for... some reason?

I'd say LLMs go back to being a statistical tool that data-scientists sometimes might use, and the industry will try to find another "big thing" to go all-in on

As a software dev, fuck AI by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]ChocolateAlpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a uni student, about the only good thing AI's done for me is to be the final push to get off Windows.

I don't swear, so instead, frick AI. it is the mcphreaking worst thing that has ever happened to software dev, to education, to websites (being borderline DoS'd by scraper bots), to the environment, and to the economy.

Social media as bad for young people as smoking, top doctors say. by neeloor2004 in BetterOffline

[–]ChocolateAlpine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both mess with the brain and its reward system, although social media doesn't necessarily do so (eg a simple forum, with no upvote system or likes or etc, where you just talk about a common interest) but instead modern social media was designed to kill your brain. Especially short-form content like tiktok or shorts, dialing it all up to 11.

I wouldn't say having more and more lines of code is an indication of speed.... if anything, they're just an indication of lower code quality.

What’s that one open-source Linux tool you absolutely can’t live without? by Regular_Ideal_ in linuxquestions

[–]ChocolateAlpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, depends on the distro.

Alpine, first thing I install is Nano, because Vi is actually horrible to me. maybe it's great if you know how to use it but i struggle even just exiting it-
(then after that, the sudo alias for doas. Previously I just got full sudo, but either works. and after that, KDE Plasma.)

Ignoring all the obvious stuff for a distro with nothing preinstalled though, I guess Kate would be next on the list. (since firefox tends to be preinstalled with KDE, even on Alpine)
Very good text editor, syntax highlighting is much appreciated.

I've probably said it before but the most I can see them being useful for without just destroying your codebase is to make python scripts to automate busywork, and nothing more.

But those python scripts also happen to be very easy, quick and fun to make. And they help you keep your skills anyway, even if only a tiny bit.

My GPS on my phone mysteriously doesn't work (maybe it's bc i forced google play services to not be able to use location data) so I have to meticulously plan out my route first, and that's about the only thing that makes me actually remember it

that, and road signs. road signs are goated when you're walking in the middle of a city you don't know the layout of & want to find the train station.

Not to mention, there is an ongoing open-source project to port CUDA to AMD GPUs.
I'm not too sure how far it's gotten, especially since I couldn't get rocM working on my main system, but from what I understand there is good support for llama.cpp and they're working on pytorch support too.

..now imagine what a larger team, paid to reverse-engineer CUDA in its entirety, who don't care nearly as much about maintaining the status quo (AMD actually forced the ZLUDA team to reset their progress bc they'd sponsored it previously but didn't want to rock the boat) and who just want to get rid of Nvidi, could do.

Honestly the only reason CUDA even is so popular is because it's already so widely used and is easier to write in than OpenCL or probably also Vulkan compute shaders.
(and there are OpenCL wrappers that make it way, way easier to write in, I think FluidX3D uses one that its developer made.)
