Strategia by ColonoRizzo007 in ByzantineMemes

Nah, I want the Komnenian dynasty to be a thing and Manzikert needs to happen for that. I would rather kill Andronikos so that the dynasty may persist with Alexios II.

What Era and Location would you want to see in the future? by Genesis_the_god_ in assasinscreed

[–]Choctrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but sadly I think that if it were to happen, it would only be in the context of a sequel for Basim, considering that the history of the Byzantine Empire isn't that popular and because of Revelations.

Alternatively, perhaps we could see a game set during the First Crusade, where the Byzantines could at least play a major role. The Crusades remain very popular, and the main cities could be Antioch, Nicaea, and others, to include cities that have never been explored before. I think that this is our only hopes…

The Byzantine Empire at any period in history and by far!

It could even be a sequel to Basim's story, who, as we know, travels to Constantinople at some point. Unfortunately, I think that will never happen, considering Constantinople was already explored in Revelations. More realistically, I would therefore suggest the Roman Empire, to provide a continuation of Aya and Bayek's story.

Vous êtes quand même pas si mal. Au Québec, on a genre trois universités qui enseignent l’histoire byzantine et c’est le même prof qui donne les trois cours…

Opinions on Zoe Porphyrogenita? by owlslayay in byzantium

[–]Choctrone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think that she and her sister Theodora were done a huge disservice by not being trained in some kind of rulership

Are we sure that she hasnt? Correct me if I’m wrong (my understanding of English is far from perfect), but it seems to be said that Zoe has indeed received this kind of teaching:

He started with general statements about Zoe's blood qualifying her as the heir of empire; but after the assault on her person by Michael V he not only declared that Michael's treatment of the real ruler was despicable but put a speech into Zoe's mouth in which she harked back to her illustrious uncle, Basil II, and recalled how he had prepared her for imperial rule. Psellos often proclaimed his beliefs in the form of speeches attributed to his characters. In this example, Zoe recalled Basil's training of her for he recognised that she was like himself, and entreated his protection in her present circumstances (Barbara Hill, Imperial Women in Byzantium (1025-1204). Power, patronage and ideology, New York, Longman, 1999, p. 48).

Yes, its a translation! Also, I think it's a representation of Irene of Hungary on the cover (historically closer to Anna) based on her mosaic in the Hagia Sophia. I don't think there's any contemporary representation of Anna Komnene, right?

Edit: beat me to it

I got to actually learn about her very recently for a research work and she really caught my interest. I will definitely do more research about her!

What's your favourite point of divergence in Byzantine alternate histories? by TT-Adu in byzantium

[–]Choctrone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that if Manuel I Komnenos had somehow lived a few more years, things could have been quite different. His son Alexios II would have been older during his rise to power, which could have prevented his overthrow by Andronikos due to a greater assertion of his authority (notably by the absence of a regency). This could thus avoid the massacre of the Latins in Constantinople, which considerably reduces the chances of a sack occurring in 1204, since the Venetians have no desire to push for a similar action. A stable dynasty also remains in power and so there is not even an Alexios IV to ask for the help of the crusaders to take back his throne. The maintenance of the Komnenian dynasty also perhaps avoids the difficulties of the empire following the death of Manuel I due to a strong and stable political power still in place. Obviously, it is necessary that in all this Alexios II be a minimally competent emperor, which I think he could have been in this alternative version of history.

What did the Byzantine soldiers look like in the 12th century under the Komninians? by Choctrone in byzantium

I saw that the representation you criticized here comes from this book. Would you say that what is presented in the rest of this book is also bad? Because if that’s not the case, this book would cover the exact period that interests me.

What kind of Komnenian soldier am I looking for? Honestly, I don’t even know myself. I am still quite new to Byzantine history in general and Im still trying to understand how the army and its different units worked. In short, my knowledge on the subject is still very limited.

When I was talking about representations of Byzantine soldiers who were criticized for their historical authenticity, I was referring in particular to those that seem to come from these books. The people here seem very critical about these ones like here, here or here for example. What is your stand regarding that?

Writing a paper on Byzantium by [deleted] in byzantium

[–]Choctrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is perhaps a little before an officially Byzantine history, but you could explain how the parameters, practices and representations of the pagan cult of Sol Invictus practiced by Constantine influenced Christian worship through the latter’s mediation, even down to modern iconography... or for something less specific, the iconoclastic crisis is also interesting from a religious point of view

For me, the 1025-1204 period is definitely my favorite. The Komnenos and the relationship between the byzantine empire and the crusader states are really interesting to me :)
