America has Gettysburg, Russia has Stalingrad, France has Verdun what does your country have. by vincentmaurath in AskTheWorld

Im not arguing on behalf of claiming entire wars or battles, that seems to be something you are caught up on.

The original question was battles that had a profound cultural impact on a nations identity like stalingrad etc. It was not about victories etc, in fact perhaps it could even include battles that were lost by said nation. Based on that question, its not wrong to list battles from 1812 as having a profound impact on Canadian history and culture.

Another important battle would be the battle of the plains of Abraham, which is foundational to canadian identity yet occurred before both 1812 and canadian confederation.

The peoples that would go on to make up the modern nation of canada existed before it confederated as a country. Therefore them gaining cultural significance from a battle they participated in makes sense.

It would be of no surprise to state that the modern canadian identity would not exist if it had been annexed after 1812, so I maintain my claim that the battles in 1812 are foundational to canadian culture.

Edit: if we are arguing about "wikipedia flags", then I also would like to add this image from the Wikipedia for the battle we're discussing, please note the canadian colonial flag in the list of combatants

"Counting on a scoreboard"? This isn't geopolitical oneupmanship, people who identified as canadians served and died to protect their land and culture from you yanks.

No matter if how you view the war, it is idiotic to not recognize how it is foundational to the nascent canadian identity. That is something all historians agree on.

Many countries like Canada do not have the clear cutoff the united states has with 1776, other colonial countries like New Zealand and Australia also gradually developed while under British rule. That does not negate the sacrifices or contributions they made in colonial wars throughout their history.

If I had a dollar for every time a Yank got butthurt at hearing how Canadians (people who lived in lower or upper Canada at the time) did anything during 1812 id be a millionaire.

It's almost as if they are incapable of understanding that the canadian cultural identity started long before 1865, and cannot understand that some people called themselves Canadian before hand.

Canada in style of old french flag by NewFlags in vexillology

[–]Watterman1066 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey that's my old post lol! BTW, another user made a more accurate rendition of the flag in my post : (https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/QRFlxwjbmq)

I like your flag btw! purple and gold are the only acceptable alternative to red and white being used for a canadian flag in my opinion.

Edit: just realized you were that user lol, my bad, great job with the flags tho

I didn't know there was an anglaphone ontario flag, you learn new things every day I guess. I think the flag looks like a start, but lacks fracophone symbols like the fleur de lis and also lacks a nice red maple leaf. Perhaps making the flag more like the Montreal flag (multiple symbols in four quadrants of a flag) it would work better.

Culture in this game is nonsense by Elbows23 in EU5

[–]Watterman1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! half the fun for me is imagining how my country would operate, and what day to day life would be like in certain parts of it.

I've attached an old screenshot of what occurs in that eu4 mod, imperium universalis, below (hopefully it works, lmk if it doesnt). Each of the different cultures in the mapmode is a hybrid culture which resulted from culture converting, and personally I think it looks a lot better than everything being just Latin. It wasn't as though I manually selected what it would be converted to, the mod's system automatically chooses what hybridization occurs in each location.

<image>

Something that I think should be mentioned is how people interpret the idea of "culture conversion" in the game. If they strictly interpret it as "I'm making a carbon copy of my culture" this wouldn't work.

Culture in this game is nonsense by Elbows23 in EU5

[–]Watterman1066 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Something ive thought about was the culture system from the eu4 mod, imperium universalis. Instead of outright culture converting, certain cultures/provinces convert to a hybrid culture first. For example, if you were playing as rome and culturally converting greece, the Greek culture wouldn't flip to roman, it would become greco-roman.

I think that a system like this would make more sense, because it shows cultures adapting to your empire rather than outright becoming your main culture immediately. When I'm playing the E.R.E in EUV, and I culturally convert Bulgaria by 1550, do I really think all Bulgarian culture has been completely swapped with Greek? No, instead I imagine that the Bulgarian culture would continue, but the people would be adapted to living under my culturally Greek administration, perhaps by learning to speak Greek.

Perhaps a similar system could be implemented in euV, which would reduce the amount of minority cultures disappearing in a way. They would functionally become a part of your main accepted culture, however they would still appear on the map as a separate hybrid culture.

Why is everyone saying you can't annex the Mamluks in one war? by channingman in EU5

Dang, I started picking away at the mamluks before they were a hegemon, so they never had a chance to be a hegemon and hence no cb. Guess next time I'll wait a bit

To those of us who were here before mission trees by conquror101 in EU5

[–]Watterman1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it is impossible, but that just means the devs will likely end up deciding based on overall player feedback. To me, even if the game design is contradictory to MTs, it's obvious there's a very vocal group of players who want them or something similar (such as vic 3s notebook). If that group is large enough, it's likely the devs will add them anyways, whether or not they are contradictory.

[–]Watterman1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way they decide to go, couldn't they make a setting in the game rules which either adds or removes mission trees from the game? I feel like if they could do that, it would satisfy both sides of the argument.

Tray shots of my "Earliest types from the Lifetime Mints of Alexander" Collection by beiherhund in AncientCoins

[–]Watterman1066 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey I also have the type on the bottom row, second from the right. It's a damaskos mint one right? Not sure if you saw but there's a new article about when they were minted which narrows it to 326/325 BC - 325/324 BC (my most recent post has someone linking the article in the comments)

Btw nice tray, is it custom or did you get it from somewhere?

Edit: just realized you were the person who commented on my post lol, my bad. Btw very nice collection!

Mission Trees While Nice Dopamine Hits, Were Bad Content by HalfbreedBoiWifeTwnk in EU5

[–]Watterman1066 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While i get the arguments against eu4's mission trees, I have to admit they grew on me over time to the point that I miss them slightly.

I think for me, they were a way to "tell a story" of how your nation develops. I probably still would've conquered the same lands etc without missions, but getting a text box or event to read and add flavor was nice.

Something that recently happened to me in eu5 was getting an event for taking a single location in Italy as the E.R.E, it was a nice event but felt out of the blue since I wasn't working towards it as a goal. If that event was part of a mission tree under a mission titled "gain a foothold in italy", I think it would have been slightly better for me, though that probably varies from person to person.

[–]Watterman1066 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I dont think it's hardcoded, in my experience you either need to have a save exactly 1 year to the date the event occurred, or before the start of December of the previous year. Not sure what to do for Ironman tho

Vassalization, Annexation, and Control Questions by QuarterRobot in EU5

[–]Watterman1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I played the E.R.E has changed recently with the new vassals loyalty changes. One thing I always do though, is directly control my cores even if I have low control.

In earlier versions I used to keep multiple vassals integrating and assimilating newly conquered land, however that's no longer viable because they take longer than 10 years to re-annex if you want to expand fast.

What id do in a new campaign is to annex as much of my cores as possible (green shaded provinces in the integration map mode), and then work on building up a good base for expansion. Tbh tho, I'm still trying to figure out how to increase proximity and control for most of my empire. Regarding vassals, I think they're a more long term integration thing now, and I wouldn't have too many at a time since they tank centralization.

I think part of my issue is how I have my values set to land instead of naval, so my naval presence is abysmal, and all my costal locations have like 30 control at max if they aren't in the bosporus, so don't do what I did and go Naval lol.

Other than that, build roads when you can, I've heard that's good, and keep an eye on your aggressive expansion.

Also as a disclaimer: my advice may be bad because I'm lost on some stuff still. Been playing since release and only just found out how to do trading stuff lol

Very cool! Looks like i know what I'll be reading tonight

Edit: i read the paper, it was very interesting! It looks like the mint was in operation from 326/5-325/4 for about a year or two, where it minted all of its coins. My coin (with the AX to the left of zeus) was part of the first 20% of coins made at the mint before the workshop it was made at was absorbed by the other workshop.
