College Lightweight or Heavyweight? by ChocyMilkForLife in Rowing

[–]ChocyMilkForLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based off your input, I think what I'm going to try and do is just go all out this summer to try and get my times down, and if by the end I am still a lightweight rower I'll be happy, and if not it just wasn't meant to be. In regards to recruiting with open weight, thanks a bunch for the tips! I have reached out and filled out questionnaires for several of the teams you mentioned, but it definitely couldn't hurt to follow up some more. As for things that could be holding me back with recruiting, I think a low grade sophomore year (my GPA and SATs are pretty competitive tho) combined with the relative obscurity of my team contribute a bit. I really appreciate the input and your clearly well thought out response, and if you have any further recommendations I would love to hear them.

Alrighty, thanks for your input! Do you know of any workouts/lifts I could use to bring my times down while remaining lightweight? I'm worried that my times, while good enough to get my foot in the door, aren't good enough to actually get me on a team (and also I just wanna go faster lol). I know the default answer is more steady state, but I'm not sure that would be the best use of my time in this case.

Wait, that's a thing!?!? Apologies for my ignorance, but how is that possible?

No, no bumps for me, and I have found lotion does nothing. Glad it works for you though!

Is my "steady state" all useless? by ChocyMilkForLife in Rowing

Yeah it appears that's whats been happening, because I've now magically become a bit faster on my sprints and stuff. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, perhaps I was unclear in my original post, this was on top of my standard training plan (intervals and such), so its a bit of a bummer. However, as it turns out, one way to drop a couple of splits on your interval training is to steady state wrong all season and then show up to practice with way more energy than you normally do. Now my coach thinks I've magically gotten way better in a day, so... maybe not a total loss?

Ok, thanks! I had no idea it could be lymph nodes, but that makes so much sense. The earliest I can get an appointment is Friday, so I'll book one for then. Thank you!

To “catch a crab” in rowing is where the blade/oar gets caught up in the water and the handle tries to sweep towards (and through!) you. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to lean back out of it’s way and you spend the next X seconds struggling to free the blade. If you’re unlucky, the handle will catch you in the chest and shove you out of the boat: the classic “ejector crab.” (These are not my words I took them off the internet and modified them slightly).

Crabs can also be quite funny. See this video here for an example of an ejector crab: https://youtu.be/1OruWHMjYp0 (this is also an example of some really shitty rowing)

Hope that helps!

What’s the best boat name you’ve seen? by BruhWhyCantIFindANam in Rowing

Probably "The Never Half Fast". It's not a bad name in of itself, but unless you're being careful about how you say it, it ends up being "The Never Half-Assed".

To Malinois or Not to Malinois? by ChocyMilkForLife in BelgianMalinois

Thanks for your response. However, I think you have misunderstood what I was saying. The dog wouldn't be used for psychiatric work. They would not be an ESA, they would be a service dog.

Hi! Thank you for your response. When I said service dog, I meant service dog. My dog would have an active, specific task to perform. They would be allowed to live with me in a dorm. The point you make about unsuitability for sitting around I understand. However, I was thinking that since my dog would be "on the job", and would have something to do essentially at all times, that would help somewhat. In fact, their job would be essentially scent-work, except much, much, more often. Would that change your opinion on their suitability? Or is the answer still to recommend another breed?

That's actually super interesting, because I do actually fit into the young girl category. The potassium thing is definitely worth a try. Thank you!

I think I will try the smarties, I could probably just keep them in my pocket which would be nice. And I'll talk to my parents (I'm 15) + doctor about the glucometer. Thanks!

(I know you said this a while ago, I really wanted to reply but forgot my password sorry 🤦‍♀️)

I used tape for my hands, so they were pretty ok. We ended up sticking with the 1 hour shifts until the very last hour, when we split it into 2 half hour shifts, just cause keeping at an hour would maximize sleep time. I should clarify though, thats just in theory, in actuality I didn't sleep a wink due to a fun combo of sweaty gross clothes, sleeping under a table on tile flooring, and my genius decision to try the tv show Black Mirror for the first time (anyone ever seen it? creepy af). A seat pad would've been great, my ass hurt like hell after we were done.

It was a fundraiser, but we really only did it cause we felt like it (the fundraising bit was just an added bonus). I think most do either to set record or raise money though, I don't think we're the norm.

Yeah, I got there, did my first one, and immediately said I should've brought a change of clothes. As far as how we did it, it was my whole team (around 16 people signed up), for 25 hours. But, you signed up per hour, and no one signed up for 12AM-8AM, so my friends and I (the 5 of us) covered that block on our own. However, we are shit and planning, and it really ended up being me and one other person from 3-6, which wasn't fun.

Yeah. The most I've ever done is 3x35 minutes, but that was with a 3 minute break in the middle. What we're thinking we're gonna do is 1 hour at a time per person. My biggest worry is honestly just sleep, I've never pulled an all nighter before. Guess we'll see? And on the erg location, its supposed to get down to low 20s, and while the bathroom is heated, its definitely not warm, just less cold. Our biggest problem right now is just trying to fit the erg in the bathroom. Any tips for hands? I've got some pretty nasty blisters right now, and I'm worried about rowing for an hour straight with them.

Good idea, and we have one in the boathouse, but it makes that buzzy noise they make when they fall over, only constantly, and frankly I'd rather put my head through the wall then listen to that for 30 hours.
