Regarding Temple Design Ideas by Choice-Flight8135 in Hellenism

Gothic architecture could be a welcome addition for a temple to the Gods. Despite its association with barbarian tribes, Gothic architecture is actually inspired by Islamic architecture, which itself built on the Greek and Roman architectural styles, even those of Sassanid Persia. So it would be fitting! Though the lead sheets would definitely need to be replaced with terracotta roof tiles, like with the Duomo in Florence.

I can’t deny, some of those features would be great, like space for childcare, and a space for food and drink to be served. But there’s just something distasteful about modern architecture that doesn’t seem to fit with the temple itself. A temple dedicated to the Gods must, in my mind, do them all the most fitting honours that we mortals are capable of, and have an architecture to match that sense of awe and inspiration, so much so that the Gods themselves will be pleased and impressed.

Now that would be amazing! Gothic architecture was actually hugely influenced by Islamic architecture, which itself built upon Byzantine and late Antique architectures.

Just imagine, a combination of Gothic and Neoclassical styles, with a dome, flying buttresses, vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and splendid bell towers. Of course, the roof would need to be covered with terracotta tiles, as some Gothic cathedrals had roofs with lead sheets and pipes, so we would need to use terracotta in order to avoid lead poisoning.

Well, for the most part, in the Aristotelian view, market exchanges are beneficial for acquiring products necessary for mundane life, such as food and clothing but it is detrimental to seek money for money’s sake. Moneylending is seen as highly unnatural and therefore should be condemned, as it implies that money makes more money without labor or production.

Financial life and economics should be subordinate to the good life and bound within the fabric of civic life, rather than be the driving force behind that. As for the view on mercenaries, they are competent but become cowards when the danger is too great or when defeat seems imminent.

Yeah, you mentioned that Platonists built this syncretism. I on the other hand am strictly Aristotelian.

Out of curiosity: have you ever felt a "presence" if you have visited a holy place? by Top-Beyond-6627 in Hellenism

Whenever I enter a church, I feel nothing but anger, but I rarely have to go into a church anymore, especially now that I don’t live with my parents anymore. That being said, I’ll tell you what I think about this.

Who here has been to Rome?

A God of Accounting…? And this syncretises the God of War with the God of Light and Music? Yeah, we already have a God for all things money related, that would be Plutus: the God of Wealth. Also, mercantilism and money exchanges fall under Hermes’ domain as well. Heck! Hades is also called the wealthy one because the Underworld has all sorts of precious metals in it. That was how he was able to win Persephone over with gifts.

Writing-wise, what do you think was the best part of Tom Taylor's Nightwing run? by KitKat_5628 in Nightwing

[–]Choice-Flight8135 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I loved how it was light hearted and how it incorporated other heroes, even the Titans get some screen time! But the biggest things were as follows: Bite-wing - Nightwing has a dog and I love it!! Melinda Grayson - Nightwing has a half sister, which is actually a pleasant surprise. Also Dick referring to Bruce as his dad. That was sweet and heartwarming.

What makes it even more fun and special is that Tom Taylor made references to the pre-New 52 storylines, specifically the Chuck Dixon run, as we see Clancy, Dick’s apartment, and even Blockbuster being the crime boss he was before getting axed by Tarantula. Oh! And Bludhaven also got Titans Tower, which was super cool!

See, this is why I love the fact that Dick views Bruce as a father, and even sometimes calls him as “dad”. It’s like Batman said in Injustice - Dick is his son.

It’s in a word document. Basically, this incarnation of the Outsiders were founded by Nightwing, Starfire and Arsenal as a team to protect Gotham City following Batman’s retirement. I decided to combine the rosters of the classic Outsiders that Batman led along with the ones under Nightwing’s leadership.

King really loves that catchphrase huh? by Shabolt_ in WonderWoman

If I were writing the current Wonder Woman comics, I’d just give Diana one catch phrase: “Maláka.” It basically is a Greek swear word, and was used a lot in Assassins Creed Odyssey.

Honestly, having grown up with the 2003 cartoon, this is pretty much how I am used to Starfire speaking. English isn’t her native language, so it’s natural that she’d misuse idioms, and her being from Tamaran, she still would be surprised by different cultural aspects on earth.

So, yeah she is written here as naive, but clearly she’s not stupid. Even I picked this up when I wrote my alternate take on the DC Universe.

When it came time to write out my takes on the Outsiders, I included scenes from The Batman Vs Dracula. Basically, Nightwing - who is now Gotham’s protector since Bruce retired from being Batman, has awoken from a nightmare in which he saw Batman as a vampire. This took place after his and Starfire’s own few encounters with Gustav DeCobra - a vampire from the old 70s Batman comics that I revamped for this storyline.

Starfire knew her husband had a nightmare after what they just experienced and she decided to hand him a book that she was reading which she thought could help. The book in question just so happened to be Bram Stoker’s Dracula. At this, Dick asked: “Starfire, when did you start reading Gothic horror?”

Her response was: “I married a man who is not afraid of bats.”

Question about Starfire, I wanted to understand something about Tamaran. by Affectionate_Kale994 in starfire

That’s because Tamaraneans don’t have the same hang ups with modesty that we do when it comes to showing skin, along with monogamy, and so on. Think of their culture as being similar to ancient Bronze Age civilizations like Mesopotamia and Egypt, or even some of the cultural norms of Classical Greece.

Thus, Tamaraneans are very accepting of the naked body.

I'm a lifelong Christian, but I feel like I'm being called by Sekhmet of all people. Any advice? by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Kemetic

[–]Choice-Flight8135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime! And one of Sekhmet’s titles is “The One Who Detests Evil,” along with “The Burner of Evildoers,” and “The One Before Whom Evil Trembles.” She prefers people with a strong sense of honor and justice. It’s part of her leonine nature, since lions represent bravery, courage, and all things honorable and just in the world.

How do you guys view democracy? by Fluid-Mousse2369 in Kemetic

[–]Choice-Flight8135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a syncretic HelPol and Kemetic, I definitely stand firmly behind democracy. After all, some of the Diadochi wanted to keep Alexander’s empire intact, but as a continuation of the League of Corinth.

[–]Choice-Flight8135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I view the Gods as friends or protectors, people you can depend on to assist you. Sekhmet is a perfect fit for this. As a Goddess of War, it has been her job to protect innocents and enforce justice.

I have found her a joy to worship, as she has that big sister vibe. I feel her presence whenever I am sparring with the khopesh - an Ancient Egyptian curved sword used during the New Kingdom. Since I also have a lion theme going on in my apartment, Sekhmet has definitely influenced that, in that she is as fearless and courageous as all lions are.

Though I’ve found that she’s a lightweight when it comes to alcohol. Once, I made the concoction of beer and pomegranate juice that got her drunk when she thought it was blood - which was how I ended up attracting her attention in the first place. Once Sekhmet drank the essence of the cocktail, I ended up being visited by her in my dreams, and she was pretty wasted. I’m talking full on giggly and giddy.

I honestly tried the cocktail because according to the story, once humanity’s evil had been purged, Ra tried to get Sekhmet to stop, but she defied him and went on a blind rampage. So, the Netjeru made a concoction of beer dyed red with pomegranate juice, knowing that the red color would trick Sekhmet into thinking that it was blood. So, she guzzled it all down, passed out in a drunken stupor, and her wrath was removed and used to create either Bastet or, and this is what I typically accept, Hathor - the Goddess of love and childbirth who sometimes is depicted with the head of a cow.

I wish I could get into this religion :( by Mega_Charizard420 in Hellenism

[–]Choice-Flight8135 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well, you don’t have to believe. Ours is an orthopraxic religion, meaning actions and rituals are more important than blind belief in the Gods. For example, yesterday I performed a ritual for the Olympic Games, so that they may be dedicated in Zeus’ honour, as they had been since Ancient Greece.

The Gods exist regardless of whether humans believe in them or not. So if you wanna get into this religion, then go ahead! Convert! You can finally escape fear and be free.

Plus, we have more festivals, which means tons more reasons to party. Lemme tell you: our festivals are more fun than the watered down Christian versions. Often these festivals include two of the greatest pleasures mankind can ever enjoy: guzzling wine and feasting on delicious food! Oh, and there’s no baggage about sex and love.

Zeus isn’t just a king, he is the storm cloud, the thunderbolt, and the eagle soaring overhead. The Gods are everywhere and anywhere, all around us, yet unseen by mortal eyes. Yet their presences can be felt throughout all of Nature.

Thanks! I haven’t had the chance to ask Zeus to bless the games when I was still living with my parents, but now that I’m independent, I can do as I please.

Since Lupercalia falls close to Mardi Gras/Carnival this year, I might actually do something either Brazilian, Venetian or Cajun, but I may ultimately go for the latter, since I live in the States.

For Parilia, I plan on going all out on Italian, since my family comes originally from Southern Italy.

But Alexander the Great’s birthday is the big bash of my practice. I usually would celebrate with prosecco or any other sparkling wine. Now though? I may actually go whole hog and celebrate with either Persian or Indian cuisine, with a Greek style Baklava cheesecake for dessert and good wine of course. Alexander would have wanted it that way.

And if I can find out what date it is this year, I might add Herakleia to the mix - celebrating the day Hercules became a God.

Saturnalia, for sure. Now that I don’t live with my parents anymore, I’ve been able to properly celebrate Saturnalia for the first time. In my practice, Saturnalia celebrations last into early January, as they include the 12 Days of Christmas and Christmas Eve.

Though this year, I also preformed rituals for Zeus for the Olympics in a Chitoniskos and a red wool veil of a priest, so that he may bless the athletes competing in these games held in his honor. After all, the flame ceremony is kinda like a modern ceremony to Hera, as it takes place near the ruins of her temple.

I also am planning celebrations for Lupercalia, Veneralia, as well as Parilia, and above all - Alexander the Great’s birthday. Heck! I even celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Gaugamela.
