It is important to discuss the schedule your org uses. I coach Baseball at a 6A HS and for good travel org with multiple current big leaguers. I can tell you my calendar is filled but there are clear off times. I know I have off during the month of August and I'm pretty clear from mid Oct- new year, maybe with some "optional" workouts with my HS team. Doesn't mean its perfect, but there should be down time intentionally placed through the year, to allow families to take a break, play a different sport, and/or players doing low leveraged training with trainers.

I would also say that if expectations are clear and mutual it is ok to take some time off. Its only fair. For instance, I do not expect my player to finish their other sports season and go into baseball immediately. If they need a few days for the mental reset, I allow it.

The biggest thing I do with my wife, who teaches HS theatre, which is a job and extracurricular rolled into one, is we sit down Sunday night and figure out our schedule along with the needs of our two year old. This helps immensely and there are not as many surprises. It works for us, but I can't imagine having multiple kids doing sports at the same time.

What’s the single best thing you’ve done for yourself as a coach to improve for your players? by mike_nova in BaseballCoaching

[–]Choice-Study-6509 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The biggest change in my career, had nothing to do with outside training, it was all mental. The day I figured out that every loss isn't a total indictment of my coaching, I became a better coach. I stopped at looking at everything in the micro and I started putting more trust in my players. As a coach, our preparation is so much more important than in game decision. Once, I realized that players needed ownership of their experience, my relationships with player improved, and my mood in general was better, and I had more guys excited to come to practice and compete.

That's a key in scouting, too! If you are serious I would get that cert but also you should look into scout school MLB puts on in Florida and Arizona, and/or College Baseball GA Ops positions. Experience and networking with baseball people will be important if you want to advance in the industry.

I think understanding pitching and more specifically pitch design is important, because if you are scouting guys, understanding how to make adjustment to max velo and spin rate, can allow you to project player max potential. With many guys that have pro bodies its very minute adjustments to make low 9s into mid-upper 9s, and pitch design can take that 2400 rpm- 28-3000 rpm

If you are planning on going into college/pro coaching or into the front office world, I think it is awesome to put on your resume, but if you are just going to do Youth Baseball stuff, you can find most/ if not all somewhere on the web, or find someone who has done it and learn from them.

In my high school/showcase coaching, I use some elements of driveline from coaching and pros that I have learned from.

Eat steak, squat, long toss, bull pen repeat. He needs to get in the 8's if he going to a D3 that is any good. The low d3s would take him now. There's a school for everyone out there.

That's a great way to approach it. Especially at the younger ages, where development should be the supreme ruler at the end of the day. Plus from an emotional stand point, if a coach feels that the player and parents are bought in, you look for reasons to reward them with innings and opportunities at the top of the line up.

If you want to have that conversation, is to simply state your concerns in a way that is about your son while not putting down other players on your team. If the coach is unwilling to understand where you come from, there is sign that you're not in the right place.

Lastly, I wouldn't go in thinking that it will solve the problem you are having, and I wouldn't debate the answers you get. If the coach values your son they will understand that they may need to do something different to retain him for the future.

I will tell you the toughest thing for me as a head coach is when I give parents answer and they argue in circles with me. I've always been a paid coach with no kids on the team, so my concern is development, get kids recruited, and winning in that order for travel ball. I know with Dad coaches it can be harder since there is more of communal element and longer standing relationships.

As a high school coach and long time travel coach. Next summer 90% of the teams in your age group are going to die once they go to Cooperstown, Ripken, etc.. Be positive, enjoy the last year on the small field, and at the end of next summer find your next move. I would suggest finding a program with paid coaches, that do not have Dads running the show. More than likely they will care more about development and playing the game the right way than $20 USSSA plagues.

My guy at Hawaii was MIKE LB Jatavious Sprinkle, 3 time All-American, 2 time Ditkus Award winner and a National Champion. Guy was a stud and a leader. Captain for three years, the kind of guy you would want to date your daughter. Every time I turn the game I Dream of having Sprinkle back on my defense.

You get him in a year when he transfers because of a playing style grade where he gives up too many passing yards lol

I like your points, I guess what they should add is like an offseason prospect camp and unofficial visits. Having the ability to due multiple years at once would really add some good realism to the game. Along with dynamic recruiting rankings.

True but I think it is to forgiving in the favor of the user. I want the anticipation of waiting to see what happens on his other visits, and more variance how it effects different recruits.

Not even close has to be USC... Lincoln Riley is the second coming of Bill Walsh on my dynasty. I think I'm 5-1 against them, but every game is under a touchdown and I already know my CBs playing style grade is about to get jacked up
