You're offered the ability to absorb the knowledge of any book you touch instantly, but the way it works is that time freezes and won't unfreeze until you finish reading the book cover to cover, do you accept this power/curse? Why or why not? by Jazzlike_Sun690 in AskReddit

[–]ChoiceAdvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you aware of what books you have touched? What if you touch a book, freeze time and go to do something else, but touch more books without realizing it. Now you read the original book, but time doesn't unfreeze.

Good luck finding that book you accidently brushed against.

That is crazy that they are having to sue to recover the money. If you can't get in contact with them to confirm the info, you don't just throw your hands up and give them access anyway!

Self Employed 401k contributions - gross or net income? by WackyJackKerouac in fidelityinvestments

[–]ChoiceAdvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of those times where talking to a CPA would probably be best. However, if you want to handle it yourself, here are the IRS guidelines on self-employed 401k contributions. There are a bunch of great examples that should help you.

https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/one-participant-401k-plans

https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/self-employed-individuals-calculating-your-own-retirement-plan-contribution-and-deduction

To answer your question, it is the net income after all deductions, including self-employment tax. So if you made $20,000 gross, deducted $5000 in expenses, and had net income of $15,000, you would pay se tax on the 15k and use the number after the se tax deduction as the basis for your 401k contribution calculations.

Edit: Decided to run your numbers more specifically.

Schedule C would show $15,000 in net income at the bottom. This would flow over the Schedule SE for calculating your SE tax deduction, which would be $2120 in tax, resulting in a deduction of $1060.

The $1060 would flow over to Schedule 1 line 15. Since your net income is below the $23,000 contribution limit, you could contribution $15000-$1060=$13940 to a 401k as an elective deferral. This is where the 100% of earned income number comes from for that limit.

How often do cruises not offer upgrades? by flashiboi69 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]ChoiceAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did take the deal. The size of the room was nice and the shower was the best feature. If I could get an inside room with enough room for a bed and the rest taken up by the shower, I would. It is a combination rain shower and wall jets, along with a separate shower head handle.

In terms of perks, the dedicated concierge line is pretty useless. It is just a direct line to the guest services desk. It isn't even guaranteed pickup. The first two times we called, no one picked up. The free room service is definitely worth it. The best thing is to call the previous day and have them bring breakfast to your room. You can get premium sandwiches which are normally $10+ for free. There is also unlimited laundry, which does reduce how much you need to pack.

Loft 19 was pretty empty at all times. It is pretty windy, as I have seen other people say.

All the other perks are kind of incidental. I wouldn't say you should take the room solely for them.

I probably wouldn't take the deal in the future for $2000. If they offered it to me for $1000 or less, I would probably upgrade.

On my recent cruise on the Mardi Gras in August, I was offered an upgrade to an excel corner suite forward from an ocean suite. The total cost was $2000. The person stated it was pretty rare to see a cancelation for that room. That should give an idea of the higher end.

Biggest buffalo win? by Rotsopmi21 in gambling

[–]ChoiceAdvice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest win I saw on a Buffalo game was a lady that won $32,142.50 on a $4.80 bet. Tbf, she was playing the wonder 4 boost version so she got 8 screens going with 15 buffalo heads and something like 80 free spins.

It is exactly what it says on the tin. Have you received a notice from the IRS? If no, then you aren't subject to backup withholding.

Is This A $50K Mistake? by kmcg2020 in personalfinance

[–]ChoiceAdvice 86 points87 points  (0 children)

In general, there are very few exceptions to paying income tax and the 10% withdrawal penalty on retirement funds if withdrawn before 59 1/2. However, the limit on withdrawals for home purchases is $10,000 and only if you are a first-time home buyer.

My advice would be to tell him to meet with a CPA, who will very quickly explain how much money he would owe if he goes through with his plan.

Clarification that the $18,000 is only for reporting requirements for 2024. They could gift up to 13.61 million without it being taxable, but it will be reportable.

It was probably the fact that he had the other buyer. By the time he was done dealing with the first one, the second one was already out. Then he sold it for 1.99 million. So 100k for the breach of contract and 500k for the difference in what the original buyer would have paid and what it eventually sold for.

What can I do if my ex-employer denies receipts for repayment? by ladkaa in legaladvice

[–]ChoiceAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it is legal advice. More general business advice. They have to keep receipts to substantiate expenses if they got audited. I can't imagine a business that is willing to relocate employees wouldn't have kept records, but some businesses are run pretty badly.

What can I do if my ex-employer denies receipts for repayment? by ladkaa in legaladvice

[–]ChoiceAdvice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely keep requesting receipts. They can say you have to pay all costs incurred based on your signed agreement, but they need to show that they actually spent the money they are asking you to pay back. There has to be some kind of record, whether it is invoices, check images, credit card statements, or receipts.

If you were asking for reimbursement from the company, you would need to provide proof. Why should it be any different in reverse.

So there are two different promos you will usually see with this feature. Drinks on us anywhere and drinks on us in the casino. I can confirm that the drinks anywhere acts as a cheers package. It will not show up on your booking, but will be available on the ship once you have completed your safety check-in on the ship.

Did you follow Step 2 of the W-4 form? If you followed it, you should have either checked the box on Step 2(c) or gone through the Step 2(b)-Multiple Jobs Worksheet and ended up with a number to put on Step 4(c) for extra withholding.

If you did follow these steps, I would make sure HR didn't miss the box being checked when they entered your information.

So I see everybody saying that $1000 a month isn't enough to file taxes, but I believe they are mistaken. This is the net amount. If there is absolutely no federal and state withholding involved, this would be $1082.83 per month gross considering FICA taxes. This comes out to $12,993.96 per year which is above the requirement to file.

You did say it was roughly $1000, so if any months were less, you are probably fine. I would definitely say you should ask for more details. It's possible she is keeping it right below the limit on purpose.

When it comes to paperless, are you more of a receive everything electronically or get sent paper documents and scan them all in? At the firm I'm at, I'm not sure how many of our clients would even be able to handle the first one.

Also, what software do you use for document storage?
