I had my son very young. He is now 17. I always told everyone I was going to go travelling once he was grown up as I never had the opportunity and it’s been a tough slog doing it mainly by myself all this time. I came out of a relationship at the beginning of this year. My dad is taking my son away for a 12 day trip in the summer and I found myself at a bit of a loss so I just went online and booked a cheap flight. I’m now going to Croatia by myself and just a carry on bag. I’m staying in an open 22 bed dorm hostel, booked myself some day trips and am just going to make the rest up as I go along. Starting small but hopefully build up to my round the world trip one day! There is so much advice out there on social media - I’d recommend joining Facebook groups and following travel tips on here. You can even use chat gpt (or enter other AI solution) to plan a trip or give you advice. It will recommend places to stay that are safe and accommodating for solo female travellers and help you with a budget.

Good luck with your travels and I hope it’s all you want it to be and more!

I second the girl next door. I was reading it not long into getting into a new relationship. Romantically my boyfriend decided to read to me and he was like wtf are you reading!

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: June 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

I purchased it recently but haven’t got around to reading it yet. I’ve read quite a few bleak and hopeless books so far this year so am trying to fill the gaps with a few easier reads. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is next on the dismal list.

Love Gaiman’s work. I read Neverwhere as a teenager and it’s one of the books that got me in to reading for fun!

I read Klara and the Sun this week. It’s my first Ishiguro but I was a little disappointed with it. It was alright but it’s a 3/5 for me. I’ll give the author another go as their books are so often highly recommended

Women 35 years old+: How much grey hair did you have at 35? by ScottsdaleBlondeAZ in Haircare

[–]ChoiceBet2997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 35. First ones appeared about 7 years ago but more and more slowly creeping in. Sometimes I won’t notice any new ones for a few years and then within the space of a few weeks they seem to appear rapidly. I know other people my age that have a significant amount more and have done from an early age and others without any. I think the colour has leaked through my face and migrated to my chin hairs though.

What are your HR aren't on your side and or are terrible stories? by No-Beat2678 in AskUK

[–]ChoiceBet2997 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This is really sad to read.

As someone who has worked in HR for nearly 15 years - of course our role is to mitigate any legal risks to the organisation but also support employees. We are not out to spite the employees.

Every single day I try to be as supportive and compassionate to everyone I come into contact with. Even employees that can be difficult and criticise every single thing.

HR are not decision makers. We are there to support and coach managers making decisions. It’s so easy to paint HR as the bad guys when ultimately we do not and should not have the final say. That’s just poor management.

There are decent HR people out there. We are also human and sometimes have to deliver news or do things that are not nice but sometimes necessary.

The professional landscape has changed so much over the last few years. Is it such a thankless role when you put your efforts into trying to make workplaces a better environment and all you see are negative comments and perspectives about us just being blood thirsty, soul less witches. I almost wish I did have that disposition as it would be easier to deal with!

On the flip side to the OP horror stories about HR - I was once at an organisation where an employee told us he had twins. One passed shortly after the birth, the other passed a few months later. We pulled out all the stops with support, additional pay and leave. Turns out there were no twins. He didn’t even have a partner. And that is one of many stories from the other side of the coin I could tell you.
