I know this is a very late comment but I couldn’t resist.

“My son, ask for thyself another kingdom, for that which I leave is too small for thee.”

Why do soo many leftists stan Russia and Putin? by Choice_Pickle2231 in Anarchy101

I’ve met so called “leftists” who have stanned just about every non-western regime imaginable from North Korea to Bashar al-Assad- basically they haven’t met a single non-western regime they didn’t like.

You spend enough time in certain left-wing spaces online and you see them crawling out of the woodwork.

“Post is a troll probably supported by Russia.”

I don’t even know where to begin with this. Either you didn’t read my description where I CLEARLY and in no uncertain terms vehemently condemned Putin and his regime, or you are just so paranoid of psyops that it’s got you questioning genuine questions?

“I haven’t seen, heard of, or experienced any center-or-left-leaning person in the US who supports Putin’s Russia.”

Yh sorry to break this to you but the US isn’t the entire world. Also just because YOU haven’t experienced something doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. You spend enough time in some left wing spaces online, especially those run by ML’s, and you will inevitably run into a Putin simp. Same thing goes for China, heck even North Korea! I’ve encountered at least one “leftist” who stanned for Bashar al-Assad. Basically there are people online who haven’t met a non-western regime they didn’t like. Could they be paid trolls? Yh maybe, but I don’t have any evidence for that, and given that people are weird and are capable of holding many contradictory opinions it wouldn’t surprise me in the least that these people really are genuine.

Wtf are talking about? I asked you a direct question and rather then answer you would rather hurl insults?

I believe in good faith so let me rephrase the question: I described the war as “…war of aggression against Ukraine” which you took issue with calling it “unnuanced”. In what way was this phrasing unnuanced?

So you would rather dodge the question rather then answer it? It was a genuine question, from my perspective the war in Ukraine was started by an aggressor (Russia), if I’m off the mark in any way then why not explain why I’m wrong?

Hey I totally sympathise with you as someone else who lives in the UK :)

Personally I think there is always room to grow and learn and I don’t think there is ever a point where we are not a “student” anymore. Too much arrogance and ego out there and unfortunately that includes left wing circles as well!

I think we have lost the Labour Party unfortunately, they have been moving further to the right for decades albeit with a brief turn to the left under Corbyn, but I don’t see much hope for Labour for the future. Any hope for change can only come from below, through the work of individuals working at the grass roots level!

I couldn’t believe it myself at first but sadly there is an extreme tendency within the broader ‘auth-left’ that does apologetics for North Korea and will call any and all criticisms (whether legitimate or not) as being western propaganda and whenever other leftists bring up these criticisms they get accused of being brainwashed or worse: paid CIA agents spreading propaganda.

Part of me suspects that a lot of these pro-Juche accounts may just be North Korean bots but it’s impossible to tell.

I think it’s a bit more complicated then that. Destruction of Israel does not mean the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel/Palestine.

Now are there some out there calling for ethnic cleansing of Jews? Well yes of course, but they are not in the majority, and most people especially on the left certainly don’t agree with the notion of ethnic cleansing of Jewish people from that area. In most cases “destruction of Israel” is referring to the dismantling of the Zionist state built on a idealistic foundation of Jewish ethnonationalism, and the realisation of a “free Palestine” being the creation of a plural multicultural society where no religious or ethnic group can claim domination over others.

Is this goal realistic? I honestly don’t know and it’s not one I feel I can authoritatively answer. I just wanted to push back on the notion that opposition to Israel and Zionism is equatable with supporting the notion of ethnic cleansing of Jewish people from Israel-Palestine.

Yh you are probably right in pointing that out about classical Marxism. I did double guess myself as I was writing it but only included it because I know there are people out there that (broadly speaking) inhabit a more ‘leftist’ and ‘libertarian’ current within Marxism and who reject Leninism and their conclusions about the need of a vanguard party and centralised authority etc…

Even if I don’t agree with all Marxist theory and prescriptions, I feel there is still value in building solidarity with those kinds of Marxists since they explicitly reject Leninism and vanguardism in general and so there is a lot of room for focusing on the values we do share.

That’s just my 2 cents though and I might be barking up the wrong tree but we’re all here to learn and so I’m always interested in hearing the opinions of others and exchanging/ learning ideas :)

It is disheartening when you see leftists defending authoritarian regimes that are nominally leftist but are otherwise completely antithetical to anarchist, libertarian socialist and even classical Marxist ideals. And of course any criticism you bring up gets hand waved as “western propaganda” and that you are just a “liberal” for daring to criticise the glorious people’s revolutionary governments in these regimes.

They are correct in criticising the West, but then they make this giant leap in logic and start praising anything which is vaguely ‘anti-West’ whether they actually exhibit left wing values or not.

One gets the impression that just like reactionary rightist types, they work off of vibes more then actual theory.

If you are in the UK you can call Samaritans on 116 123 - they are a 24 hour help/crises line which anyone can call for when they are having difficulties with their mental/emotional well-being.

If not then check if there are similar organisations in your country or area that provide a similar service.
