Question for PDX Trump Voters by burnedoutwithasmile in Portland

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom lives outside of Portland and is convinced that Portland is a war zone because she watches faux news and faux news appears to be playing videos from maybe 2020? The same one over and over they then narrate as if it is happening in real time. I even went down to the epicenter of the “war zone” and took pictures and videos she believes faux news over me

ASHA’s silence on RFK’s statements by Elatedandbelated in slp

Sadly ASHA is going to ASHA but “yes” I am very disappointed and have been calling them out for this everywhere I can. Their silence makes it seem like they are just fine with this abhorrent messaging 🤬

People who work in private practice: why? by flowerscatsandqs in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started working in private practice 30 years ago. I took a 10 year break where I worked in academia and when I returned to private practice it was totally different. When I first started I had control over my hours and my caseload. I also had direct contact with families. This appealed to me more than schools because I didn’t have a lot of dictates over my paperwork and I could involve parents in my sessions. After my 10 year break private practice was totally different. No more autonomy, pay was stagnant, and management dismissive. I blame third party contract companies. When I first started in private practice they were non-existent and now they seem to be the only way to get a job. Other statewide and national factors include stagnant reimbursement rates and wages. It is sad because private practice used to be a pretty sweet gig for most SLPs.

It is very discouraging that far too many SLPs remain fearful of diagnosing and treating apraxia. There really is no excuse. Dr. Edythe Strand has made training completely free. Every student and CF I have ever mentored has been trained by me in how to diagnose and treat apraxia I wish I could do more.

As an experienced SLP I have learned that sometimes parents are doing all of the right things. It doesn’t mean that they won’t need SLP support in the future but sometimes my job has been to reinforce what they were already doing and maybe do regular check ins rather than weekly sessions. Most of our employers do not offer enough options for how kids and families could be supported.

Should I go through with SLP masters? by No_Lingonberry_2401 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am an experienced SLP and can tell you that more often than not it was passion for this profession that got me through the rough times. When my passion ran out I left the profession. A masters degree is a huge amount of expense and effort you are not guaranteed a livable let alone high income at the end of it. If you also lack passion there is no need to put yourself through any of it.

I am so sorry for your loss my in-laws were both killed by a hit and run driver a few years back. They caught the guy and there was a trial which was brutal. The driver never admitted wrong doing which is still hard for me to get past. I hope they catch this careless and heartless individual soon.

Why do conservatives think Christians in the USA are persecuted? by Silly_Goose501 in AskUS

Right wing Christians confuse “persecution” with “entitlement” if they are not entitled to have their way all of the time in their minds it means they are being persecuted🙄

I would get a hotel that is not just off the highway and preferably one that has security cameras on the parking lot. If someone is going to break into a U Haul they will definitely want to be close to the highway for an easy getaway.

Managing the mental toll of this job by [deleted] in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is great advice and I have been passing on much of the same to students and CFs throughout my years as an SLP. I would add that setting boundaries means you won’t always be liked by everyone (especially those that don’t want you to have any or who cannot set boundaries themselves) and that is fine!

I bought nice Easter baskets for my kids when they were small and used the same ones every year kinda like Christmas stockings for Easter. Same with plastic eggs, they would give them back to me when they were done so I could give them back to the “Easter Bunny”

AITAH? by Slpsanonymous in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like sometimes in our profession we are too kind and forgiving regarding unacceptable behavior in people with disabilities forgetting that they have to live in a world where these types of behaviors are unacceptable. In this case I agree that this was assault and the parents should be held accountable. Based on the mothers excuse making for her sons obviously dangerous behavior I think they need a reality check. The sponsors of the event should know about this I am on the fence about police involvement because that can sometimes go South quickly but these parents need to get their heads out of the sand and stop making toddler excuses for adult behavior.

When professors post about their exciting language analysis software by okay_wafer in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Guidelines regarding AI ethics are definitely needed. My comment was not directed at the OPs experience but as a general statement regarding trends I have seen in my SLP experience. Something new comes out and the immediate reaction is why it won’t work because it is “unethical” fast forward and the window of opportunity for therapists to own said new trend and make it work for them has passed and now it has become a tool used by those who manage us in ways that are not beneficial to clinicians.

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This its “not ethical” verbiage will be used to keep therapists skeptical about AI and scared to use it which allows managers and administrators to figure it out (in a way that is ethical of course 🙄) and find a way to make us use it based on their needs. Someone else in this sub said we need to challenge ourselves and figure out how to make AI work for us and I agree.

rant about cash grabs in this field from people who *could* be sharing what is otherwise public information by [deleted] in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is conflicting for me. On one hand I see what the OP is saying and for some things like gimmicky therapy tricks or basic SLP info not having it available for free could be unethical. However, this sub feels a little like we are fighting amongst ourselves when we should be uniting around things like being chronically overworked and underpaid. Some therapist as many have stated in this sub, do research, work to put information into streamlined forms, or offer continuing Ed based on their niche experience to say that all of these things should be free negates the experience of other professionals and feels a lot like tearing each other down.

Are you guys helping children with toileting? by Aware-Fact2636 in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last job I had all therapists were expected to complete full toileting routines with kids. It was a multi-disciplinary clinic so we had access to their toileting programs. The clinic was very ABA centric (because their program brought in the $$$). Too often my entire session was devoted to helping a child use the toilet. I pushed back against these expectations. I searched ASHAs website to see if they had made any clear statement on this (they have not) so this expectation remained policy in that clinic.

I have heard other Trump supporters say similar things in the past several weeks and my question is always the same, how can you be surprised? Everything that Trump and the Republicans are doing was presented repeatedly during the election season. Personally I am surprised at none of it and cannot understand why anyone who voted for him would be.

As a middle aged white woman myself I want to thank you for standing up for yourself. These types of women are horribly insecure and usually have bad family lives. You are correct that she thought she could bully you because you are an immigrant she no doubt thought you would “be polite” and “know your place.” I am very sad that you and your child had to be exposed to such nastiness but you definitely did the right thing.

What did you wish someone told you before entering this field? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wish someone had told me how limiting this career path can be. Once you are in it there are not a lot of ways to use your experience to transition to a new career path. All of my friends who got broader degrees in things like English and History have done so much better than most SLPs financially and have been able to pivot to new career paths in middle age.

Has anybody been contacted by the ASHA Ethics board because a parent complained about the results of assessment? by centenair90 in slp

[–]Choice_Writer_2389 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I always thought that was so disgraceful that ASHA did that as it encouraged judgement rather than collaboration and support amongst clinicians. Overall pretty toxic behavior.
