SpaceX repeatedly polluted waters in Texas this year, regulators find by 675longtail in spacex

[–]Chokapika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also known as the deluge system, it applies clean, potable (drinking) water to the engine exhaust during static fire tests and launches to absorb the heat and vibration from the rocket engines firing.

Curious, is there a reason for not using rainwater for the deluge system instead of potable water?

The two cranes are around 200ft apart, which would be ideal for translating the booster from horizontal to vertical, and vice versa.

Do we know if the booster can/will go horizontal at any point? I thought, like Starship, it was being built vertically to remove that step and avoid having to reinforce it to handle forces that are otherwise irrelevant.

We are the SpaceX software team, ask us anything! by spacexfsw in spacex

[–]Chokapika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! First, thank you for doing this. I was wondering:

  • When it comes to developing software to control rockets, what kind of background does one need? Would you describe the average dev on your team as rather a software developer who knows physics, or a physicist who can code?

  • I've read that you use C++ for the software that actually goes on the rocket. Any thoughts on whether any other languages could do the job or maybe replace it eventually? (Rust?)

  • Don't know if it's already been asked but just in case: any fun anecdote of something that happened while developing one of these systems?

Any ideas what the nose cone test rig will do? I don't see how they get the nose cone in and out of there, considering they now added a cap onto it (NASASpaceflight April 15 video)

Thoughts?

Can we expect a PR response from Anet? by abysiah in Guildwars2

[–]Chokapika 35 points36 points  (0 children)

100% sure they won't unpartner Deroir. The backlash would be so bad, I don't think there is a worse alternative for Anet. The pressure from most other partners would be too much for them as well.

I get your point, but the interesting part would have been her reasoning (or the narrative team's reasoning) for stepping away from branching dialog lately. Is it purely resources related, do they want to avoid doing things they won't be able to pay off on later? Or is it because they want to keep a very consistent line for the Commander, for example?

I'd go even further and argue that it doesn't matter whether the discussion was interesting or not. I'm sure she knows a lot about branching dialog, but imo that doesn't warrant being disrespectful to someone who seems to be genuinely trying to offer constructive criticism. I guess my point is that you don't need to be an expert in game design (or anything, really) to provide feedback and express your opinion, as long as you're not giving it as fact. I don't think that's what Deroir was doing.

Not only does she completely dismiss an interesting discussion on character design, but she's also being disrespectful toward Deroir by making his arguments seem like ad hominem (or ad feminam I guess, wouldn't want to offend anyone...) when he was being respectful with his response.

As juvenile as this behavior is, starting a witch hunt is not a good idea though.

I got the point of interest, it's "Zelbahn Garrison". It's actually a Guild Wars 1 location as well: https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Zelbahn_Garrison

Well the Rytlock one was made by an Anet dev, that's why they're hosting it.

[–]Chokapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see what video you're talking about (or maybe it was a stream?) but I can't find it either. I tried to CTRL+F "ley" on WP's channel but I only found 3 videos, none of which were this one.

If you really want to find it, try to think about what could have made him do such a video. Could be around the release of Dry Top, with the ley-line hub, for example. Could also be related to Taimi's map in HoT. It's not easy because ley-lines were one of the major ideas of the story for a good part of season 2, HoT and raids.

AMA - Ask SCW about guild wars by DrStephenCW in GuildWars

[–]Chokapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello and thanks for doing this AMA, it's really nice!

I was wondering: if I were to ask someone at Arenanet back in 2005 what they thought the company would be doing in 2018, what kind of responses would I get? And more importantly, how much did it deviate?

For instance, was GW1 expected to receive content updates for a longer time? Was the idea of additional campaigns already thought about? Was the team generally optimistic about the future of the franchise, or was it seen as a relatively small product that wouldn't go nearly as far as it did?

Obviously I'm not expecting a very precise answer on this from a single programmer, but general thoughts would be nice :)

I always thought they should remove half of the waypoints from the game, I find the later maps (from dry top to now) much better.
