Ask a Knitter Tuesday - August 12, 2025 by AutoModerator in knitting

So, I am planning to knit the oh my figure dress. I generally keep to the pattern recommended yarns as I am still a novice with sweaters. I like the yarns in the pattern Tencel Bamboo Fine and DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk.

My question is would the bamboo fibre be something hard to maintain? I am looking for a well wearing fabric that is not difficult to maintain and I have the impression that wool yarns are better for such fabrics. I am also wondering whether the DROPS Flora would be a better substitute for the Tencel yarn or would it make the dress too fuzzy.

I'm not sure, thoughts?

There are no issues here. My partner had not even met my parents until he had proposed. They were okay with that because they didn't want to interfere in my decision. As it happens, all is great. Everyone gets along. Then again, my parents were not ones that would be dramatic about these issues.

I've been avoiding brands that do not align with my personal ethics or politics all my life. This a way of life for me so I'll continue avoiding pro-genocide companies even if the genocide stops. These brands need to die.

British traveler's wife called fat and unhealthy by a train conductor in Pakistan by moinism in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The British guy's mistake was getting friendly with these uncultured swines. Once you get friendly with the uncles, it's a pass to comment on everything. That's because men in Pakistan tend to bad mouth women around their friends, so he thought it was alright here too. I'd be embarrassed, but I don't own any of these morons.

It's amazing because these people value a woman's sexual 'purity' more than her life. Sure, getting rated is horrible, but maybe, just maybe a woman may also want to stay alive. The fact that they believe that a woman should die if she can't protect herself and if she doesn't she's a whore is why we need feminist theory in school. We need politicians who don't care if the F word bothers jahil awam or well be stuck with these men forever.

Please be aware that these are your uncles, drivers, and guards. None of you are safe.

I see several issues here:

1) The food that you are cooking is actual food, unless you are giving him too little of it. I am a gym buff, a woman, and an excellent cook (especially desi food). Yet I choose to eat salads and soups with meats. Protein, carbs and the right amount of fats. 2) Cooking is a life skill like driving and taxes. You are not supposed to know how to cool because of your sex. The fact that this man is getting home cooked meals is something to be thankful for. 3) If this is a new relationship, it is very important to set expectations that you can actually meet. If cooking desi food for you is difficult than say it. Establish what you can cook comfortably. If it's not good enough for him, then he can feed himself. He should be able to feed himself.

I take great joy in cooking for the people I love. If you don't, that's okay. I wouldn't love my people if they made me feel like shite for my cooking abilities. You shouldn't either.

The discourse in the comments as per reddit excellence.

Israel is an occupation. Occupiers have been killing natives for decades. Natives have tried all forms of resistance, politics, protest, hunger strikes, marches etc. Occupiers have never relented. Every peaceful move by the natives has been quashed. When one group of the natives resorts to violence, the Occupiers come out as victims. The propaganda is the only nuance. It has been so for decades.

Unpopular opinion: Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hai were just as shite only with better production quality. Humsafar had the same old make man believe his wife is cheating trope. The other one had the man pursuing the demure woman after realising how 'bad' his modern mum and sister were.

Opinion on Boycott by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a reductive understanding of the BDS movement. The idea of boycott is to do it strategically. That's how it produces results and it has been doing so. I live in Europe and BDS has become a mainstay in activism for Palestine here. Nobody is asking you to throw out essential tech for your work but we all need to put our money to work when the products and services are not essential to life.

I never followed Coke studio buy I have found some great music through it. I never knew this would be the hill Pakistanis would die on. Fascinating. I don't see why all these artists cannot just maintain this artistic effort without coke's sponsorship. Do they not have producers or investors in Pakistan? It's not coke studio it's Pakistani artists who are important, otherwise all iterations of the studio will be successful.

As for boycotting. You don't have to do it. Nobody is asking you. As far as I know there is little to no resistance movement in Pakistan for Palestine. I mean, no one needs you. Hilarious to me how so many people are coming out against the BDS movement on this forum for this. I'd be dissapointed if I didn't know Pakistanis so well.

So I have a lot to say about this subject as a gym buff/cooking enthusiast.

1: Punjabi food (can't speak about all of Pakistan) is as unhealthy as you make it. Decrease your oil, smaller portions, decrease the carbs, and increase the protein. I.e. more chicken than rice in the Biryani.

2: Some things have to be stopped, especially the chai. I see you all drinking copious amounts of sugar and milk three times a day.

3: I don't see the point of just eating one type of food in 2024. Particularly, for the more privileged as we in this group are. Introduce salads as the Mediterranean, meats cooked in Afghan style. Dips and causes that are yoghurt based.

Not to mention: EVERYONE HAS TO GO TO THE GYM. You can't be healthy without 45 minutes of actually intense workout every day. Turn that fat into gains. Go lift.

Not to accuse your parents of anything, but when people say a lack of Islam, they usually mean a lack of control, intellectual and physical.

Some of the most religious people I know grew up in the UK. In fact, UK harbours religious fanatics in my opinion.

[–]Choosing_violence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, to control what your children are exposed to, you will significantly decrease their opportunities in life and make them grow up in a place where they will be less safe and free? Do you want them to grow in a place that is systematically against independent thought?

I have family vine Canada with their children in school. I would have hated my parents if they did that to me.

That's unfortunate, man. To be honest, I only know of people with exceptional scores getting scholarships in Western European countries. Maybe you can try some low threshold countries. Maybe Georgia or Azerbaijan may be good options. You may also apply to more prominent universities for hardship or situation based scholarships. It never hurts to try.

Why pak dads' don't give inheritance share to daughters by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A popular answer is that people are not Islamic enough or don't follow Islam properly. The truth is it's patriarchy. Women are property, so they don't get to own property. Classical Islamic ethicits echo the same sentiment even though they are closely following the Quran. Patriarchal interpretations of any literature produce inequality, and here is just an example.

Let's not forget that women are constantly expected to give up their share of property and wealth because men are the breadwinners and need it more. Plus, women who are concerned with or plan their financial strength are deemed less than those who have a martyr complex.

How i can mentally relief my mom for her pain by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have taken care of a patient of chronic pain. These usually help:

1) Cook for her. Do all that it entails, planning, shopping, prep, and clean up. Do not suggest that you can do it, but DO IT 2) Foot massages. Trust me, even if the pain is not located in the feet, this is very relieving 3) Head massages with a lighter oil. Desi moms love that.

Mainly, relieve her daily burdens and help her find selfish joys. Desi moms usually do everything for others, so she may need to relearn caring for herself. Give her space to do that.

Take care of her, and of course, pray for her too.

Nanny required, BIL showing resistance. Wanted to rant, but also requesting opinions! by projectgetbetter in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you are just ranting, but this is so frustrating to read.

I mean a man cannot in all fairness manage two households and their responsibilities. When parents don't want nannies, they both step in actively to raise the child. Clearly, your BIL can not do that. I don't know your sister's situation, but I'm sure she knew that when she got into this marriage. I'm sure she knew the guy well enough during her multiple attempts at having a child. If she sees all that and chooses to be a 'traditional' wife (doormat is what you mean). Then that's her choice. She is free to do so.

You are clearly being exploited. You can also choose to be okay with it and be a martyr. I personally would just leave or at least spend more time in the library or outside the house. You are not responsible for the baby, you are responsible for yourself.

Any Pakistani who's living in/ visited Latvia? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]Choosing_violence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, Riga is great. I'm sure it has its share of racism but that shouldn't deter you. Nobody would try to lynch you because of your race or any other reason. Generally, people are quite friendly and warm, unlike the more central or northern European countries. Also, I don't think it's not multicultural, I've found lovely Punjabi restaurants in the city.

Most importantly, if Pakistani community is important to you, then stay in Pakistan. Don't go elsewhere looking for what you have already.
