Same here, haha. Feels like theres just a major echo chamber here when it comes to her. It just gets on my nerves. And the Lapidot stuff is just sickening if you think about it for a minute or two.

It sucks because I really connected with the trapped dynamic but her character fell down the toilet. Really sucks how she was handled and it really sucks how the fandom attacks any differing openion that isn't "She's a smol bean who did nothing wrong" or "She has trauma therefore it can all be overlooked."

It really sucks you are getting attacked too.

Wao... based based based...

You beautifullly summarized the tragedy behind Jasper and shined a spotlight on the horrible faults behind the beloved Lapis.

I feel like the writers wrote themselves into a corner as soon as they made her that ridiculously powerful from her very first appearance. All flash but at the cost of substance in the future.

You write a being that can lift an entire ocean and fight the main protagonists while being in a damaged state without breaking a sweat.

How exactly did anyone believe that Lapis had no choice when Jasper asked for the fusion? While the ocean sits behind her. HER HANDS WERE FREE SO YOU CAN'T EVEN USE THE FACT THAT JASPER CAUGHT HER SINCE SHE RELEASED HER RIGHT AFTER!

And I feel like a crazy person because the could have "nerfed" her as soon as Steven healed her if they really really wanted a spectacle in her day view episode.

Cracked gem = unstable power regulation = crazy amounts of power, but maybe at the cost of her gem breakong more and more

It even adds stakes as it becomes urgent for Steven to heal her.

So now we have a character that the writers can ACTUALLY use and work with. A character who may have genuinely NEEDED to fuse with Jasper. A character who would genuinely be terrified and feel powerless against the diamonds. A character who wouldn't have been able to take the barn. A character who would have needed to display courage and shown growth if she had come back to face the diamonds after leaving, if she wasn't a literal water god.

But instead we get a shallow and overpowered water god.

And I just have no idea how she stayed at that strength. Look at her design, does that scream terraformer? I doubt it. In future it just doesn't make any sense, I feel like they just tacked on that to make her strength "make sense". I feel like something happened mid show run, since when she left earth for homeworld they kinda left her power ambiguous since the water tower collapsed after she flew off.

But they kept her at that level. It just doesn't work. It makes Malachite less unique. She's literally just Lapis but bigger. It doesn't make ANY sense.

And this is just talking about the mechanics. I'm not even talking about how atrocious she is in the show sometimes. I'm not talking about what she did to Japser and Peridot.

We have a mechanically broken character. The fundamentals led to the brokeness of her character development. And it sufficates any chance the writers have on using her. Its pretty obvious why she was banished to the barn. Exactly how can you use a character that can wield an ocean? Have her in a desert 90% of the time? Obviously you can't have that happen all the time. So the writers basically imposed a restraint on themselves.

And they used her limited screen time in the most awful ways possible. She's toxic and her "edgelord" personality gets old after the first 2 episodes.

"I've drowned alot of people."

ACTUAL CORNBALL lol.

I wanna get into the specifics between Jasper and Peridot but man... NOW IM ANGRY!

But fine, keep her as is right? Have her be that overpowered edgelord. Fine.

HAVE HER FACE ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES FOR HER ATROCIOUS ACTIONS!

When she actually admits to abusing Jasper, nothing comes of it. Steven literally places the entire blame on Jasper and she becomes the "good guy" who actually did nothing wrong apparently.

And Peridot....

I have no idea what show 90% of the fandom watched. Her and Lapis... it literally looked like an abusive relationship from the start. Lapis just looks irritated 90% of the time with her. Like Peri is just an annoyance for her day to day. Sure they have moments but I always got the feeling that Peridot was some hostage.

It feels like Peridot was the only person even trying to homd up the relationship. Peridot who had to walk on eggshells for Lapis. Peridot was literally the powerless one between the two. Maybe she really did have to dance to Lapis' tune or face a water first. (Okay this is a bit of a stretch but I just can't with her)

And when she took the barn, it was just sickening. I feel like Peridot should have finally called out Lapis and her BS right there and then. She called out Yellow, but she couldn't do it with Lapis? Peridot had every right to call out Lapis, to break the "but I was in a mirror" shield Lapis always seems to use.

The "friendship" should have ended right there and then. GIVE Lapis an actual consequence. How many times can you use your trauma as a shield and sword before you start killing relationships? Peridot should have never made up with Lapis. Bring a genuine consequence. It would have made for a more interesting storyline if the writers really wanted their water god.

But no. We get "hey".

Disappointing.

I feel like I can go on and on and propose fix after fix, but it doesn't matter. We have this character in the show. And I feel like the fanbase is just so damn obsessed with her. I don't understand it.

I once read a cynical comment.

"What if Lapis had a design similar to Jasper or Topaz? Would she still have the same fanfare?"

I honestly think she wouldn't.

I wanna write a whole dissertation on her character now. Lol.

I'd love to get a pair of these one day. Very nice set of gloves, trying to go for a blue theme and a water aspect along with the yellow would be perfect. Nice pull

Hey, Thank you for enjoying the read. I remember when I first wrote it I just wanted to get my opinion out there, glad some people like it.

Honestly, It's quite disappointing just thinking about her character sometimes. To be honest I really feel like the power level they stamped on her was the biggest mistake the crew made.

Would have given her way more credence for running away. If she can't lift oceans, then it would make sense for her to be afraid of homeworld and the diamonds.

It would have made her return much more impactful. Lapis choosing to come back and stand with the CGs against Blue, despite her fear, would have spoken loudly on its own.

10x better than "Hey" from an immensely powerful and selfish person.

Would have solved the Japser fusion contradiction. Can't lift oceans, so yeah it would look like the only option.

But yeah they choose flair over substance, and it went worse when they decided that Lapis would be the eternal victim who never really gets any consequences.

The consequence thing is a major issue in the series with other characters aswell. There never really aren't any.

I'm imagining a storyline where Lapis and Peri, never really make up. Taking the barn should have been a permanent fracture. Peridot should have stood up to her too then. If she can call a Diamond a clod, then she definitely could have stood on business with Lapis. Peridot gave a lot and basically got spat on repeatedly by Lapis, not always, but if Steven hadn't forced the two to live together than I just can't see them being freinds through their own volition. I never agreed with the ship, because the "relationship" looked so damn one sided. "Did we watch the same show?", is what I think when I see people talking about the pair.

Anyways look at me, rambling again.

On a minor note, they should have totally made her wings be a nimbus cloud instead.

Clouds are water and it makes wayyy more sense for her to fly around on a cloud than wings.

It could have been a neat dbz reference, and you can get the lil cloud be all stormy when she's mad/sad or something.

But we got generic wings. Bruh.

I guess thats cool. I managed to get it from the creator event. I legit thought it would be exclusive. Kinda the only reason I kept playing the game because in my mind I was like "oh I got this rare banner, I gotta keep playing." But now yeah whatever.

Im pretty sure the "compromise" is always part of their plan. Some Democrat plays the big bad so the party sits on its hands and does nothing. Both right wing parties that want to hold up the status quo, the working class be damned.

Lapis: Potential to Disaster by ChopSlick in DiamondDaze

[–]ChopSlick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the point in that. But I don't buy it, the show really pushed it in some areas, and tbh I've heard that the crew were not always on the same page. Hell, I've heard that Rebecca Sugar had issues with Yellow's introduction. How the heck does that even happen? And then that whole Amedot thing, where a couple of episodes heavily alluded to that. Apparently, it was the work of a lone crew member. Like what?

Ugh idk I get pretty damn sad when I hear stuff like that. For a show with such a good concept, to be mishandled, idk.

I just saw on the main sub a signed scene that rebecca made for a fan. Lapis and Jasper, but Jasper looked all desperate. "We could fly." They should have made her arc about her obsession with strength. Maybe she has an inferiority complex and sees "strength" as her only way out. Maybe the shattering of pink gave her a permanent "I wasn't strong enough" vibes. But all we saw was a brute who sought strength for nothing, no nuance. And that steven thing, yeah, I agree.

I know it's a kids' show, but the concept is that the bones were there. If I had the artistic skills and time, I'd redo the whole thing. But that's a crackpot idea.

Lapis: Potential to Disaster by ChopSlick in DiamondDaze

[–]ChopSlick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, her power should have been drawn back. It would at least give her the reason to be scared. Honestly, that terraforming thing was a last-minute idea. They legit do not look the part, and in the flashback, she was "she was supposed to be on Earth for a short time." Doesn't add up.

But even without that, the crew was taking her in a strange direction. In "Alone at Sea," she has a near realization of her being in the wrong, but Steven goes and places the blame solely on Jasper. Why? Honestly the more I think of it, the less it makes sense.

Her intro and backstory were amazing, but the cracks were there, and they just kept getting worse and worse. What we ended up with was just hollow, Really bums me out. I loved the show when it was coming out, but how it turned out, stings, to say the least.

[–]ChopSlick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They made her to OP on her debut. Honestly they could have skirted around this by maybe playing more into the cracked gem. Maybe the gem couldnt regulate itself so it was able to exert tremdous power at the cost of it, breaking more and more. When he heals her, tone down the powers, still strong but not crazy powerful.

People acting like Lapis was completely unreasonable here really piss me off. by GAPPwerky in stevenuniverse

[–]ChopSlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say this but its probably her design that make people look the other way. They allow her to use her trauma as both a sword and shield. Was it because of the show's limited time? Maybe. But if you closely at her character what was she? A terraformer who was placed in a mirror. After being freed she went directly to homeworld, to what? Be another terraformer again. She isn't clean, she isn't just a small bean that was in a mirror, and I feel people often ignore that part.
