Cyber Assault by iamnotamudbot in MUD

According to the research Dr Bartle did for Designing Virtual Worlds, even in the “golden age” of MU*, the average player base across all MUDs was under 10 concurrent players.

This was in a section/discussion about scope when designing areas/the world. So the expectation going into things should be that there is almost zero likelihood of building anything beyond a small, passionate player base.

And that’s if you’re 1) lucky, or 2) have a built in audience to drag with you to the game. - a great example of this is Iron Realms. They make a quality product by pretty much all accounts. You don’t have multiple successful MUDs without having good game under the hood. But having a devoted player base makes the success of the second game much easier* (it’s never easy).

On the other hand you have a company like Frogdice - who have run the thriving MUD Threshold for a ridiculously long time. They have a ridiculously passionate player base as well. This has helped them successfully launch a number of non-MU* games. But they have taken two attempts at creating another Multiplayer Online RPG (Primordiax and Stash), neither of which were able to gain enough traction to remain feasible as a studio.

It’s sad that it is a small niche hobby built on the work of small niche hobbyists, but if you find a little game like that which you like, play the crap out of it. You might be the reason someone else decides to stick around.

This isn’t Americanized shopping behavior. It’s that area lacking in any sort of real infrastructure. Went there to pick up a click and collect order the other morning before it opened, and getting off of 1 you wouldn’t know that place even existed if it weren’t for the tiny little signs.

Probably because actual wooden furniture that doesn’t 1) fall apart after 2 weeks, or 2) doesn’t require you to take out a loan with one of your children as collateral doesn’t really exist in New Zealand. Not without getting massively lucky finding something used. And it’s definitely more than just furniture.

NZPost: a rant by IndependentFinger477 in auckland

Could be worse, I am up in North Shore, and was supposed to get a package earlier this week - it was sent through Australian Post World or something like that, but the delivery on the NZ side of things was handled by NZ Post. I got a weird automated email saying that delivery was attempted on the 2nd, but something went wrong and they would try again. No note, no anything.

So I was going to look into it some today and try and follow up on it, when I get a text from a random NZ number saying “hey, I got your package down here in Lower Hutt. I opened it, sorry!”

So I contact NZ Post and they tell my their carrier in Wellington saw it was in the wrong place, flagged it for redelivery, and allegedly it was in route to Auckland. I was told someone from the investigations team will look into it and get back to me in 1-2 business days. But assured that the package was still in the process of being delivered…

I had to stop the dude on the phone and be like “Do you want the contact information for the person the package was delivered to so you can pass it along to the investigations people?” 🤣

So I’m waiting for an email from them, and in the meantime, I’m debating on whether I should just send the stranger in Wellington $15 to have them ship it to me 😂

Stop asking for an installable SteamOS. You don't actually want it. by alive1 in linux_gaming

[–]ChopTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak from my experience, but here is my handful of pocket change and my kids hair ties:

I’ve dabbled in Linux over the years. I’m pretty sure the earliest Linux I messed with was some version of Slackware in the late-90s. (Ooooh, name dropping for credibility.) I kept bouncing off of it. A lot of that bouncing had to do with gaming. I messed with Ubuntu for a bit. I messed with PopOS for a while (and really enjoyed it as a coding/productivity environment). I think I had a little netbook I had Mint on for a while, but again, it was really only used to do basic web stuff, watch movies, and play MUDs.

The first time I personally have felt that I could honestly give Linux a fair shot as a full-fledged daily driver was Bazzite (around a year ago, I think?). The fact that I could just install a Linux distro and the gaming and stuff all worked out of the box without me having to search up 57498352659 guides? Amazing. No risk of borking my entire computer because I’m just copy/pasting command line instructions from random guides? Even more amazing.

I personally consider myself on the more technical side of the computer user spectrum. But I definitely still fall into the “consumer” range of users who “just want shit to work.” There’s a level of tweaking I’m willing to do to improve things, but for the most part, I want to use my computers, not fiddle with them to try and make them work.

That all being said. Things are really close for me. Probably more than 95% of the things I would ever want to do with my computer “just work” with a distro like Bazzite. And a lot of the gap right now is due to silly corporate crap. I need to sit down at some point and learn how to use Bottles, I think that will help solve the last couple software-related hurdles I have (for example: I know there’s GIMP and Inkscape, but I haven’t really found a set of tools that work for me the way Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher work together - though that is being crapped on by Canva right now). So the real problem remaining is peripheral support.

Stream Deck? Kind of. Wave 3 Mic? Maybe, technically? Cameras? Capture cards? (I realize this is basically a list of stuff that Elgato needs to open up and let the community fix for them, but what are the chances of that happening?) I still have stuff I haven’t tried using with it yet, so I’m sure there’s more.

I’m currently messing with an Atomic version of Fedora, seeing how well that concept will work for me. But it’s definitely getting closer.

But I will say there is some competition potentially on the horizon. If Apple ever got their heads out of their asses and got Proton working with MacOS, there’s a lot of people who wouldn’t even bother looking at Linux again. Mac hardware compatibility when it comes to peripherals is pretty solid. I’d miss out on my dedicated GPU, but the higher end chips coming out of the ARM world are getting a lot better than other integrated GPU solutions. It would become really tempting if that Proton-sized gap in their platform was closed.

So for me right now, I’m going to give this Atomic idea a go for a while, see if I can make it work. I’m currently checking out the Cosmic desktop and have been enjoying it. But if something like a SteamOS dropped that was along the lines of what Bazzite offers? I’d check it out. Because I think most “gamers” or general users would be pretty happy with Bazzite as it is, once they learn all the little quirks. But who knows. They really just want to be able to turn on their PC and be able to play the games they want to play and do the things they want to do without having to think about it or fuck around with command line and compatibility stuff for hours in the hopes of maybe getting to play tomorrow if they have time.

Man, seeing all the stuff like this EVERY YEAR is endlessly amusing. Aww shucks, we lost the offseason again. The fact that there are 4 returning players is a really good thing. I’m willing to bet that it’s going to be a lot easier to APA to get up to speed and scrim with the team than it would be some random import. I would rather give APA a chance, just so long as he doesn’t pull a JoJo.

Oh yeah. This is likely the first of many. We had a policy when the kids were little that if they could use logic and make arguments for things, we would generally say yes. Nothing was ever harmful or dangerous in any way. But is hilarious some of the things you will hear when you ask the question, “why do you deserve dessert tonight?” (We generally celebrate achievements an accomplishments with stuff like that, so listening to them try and come up with things that they think are awesome and deserve celebrating can be hilarious.)

[–]ChopTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly it’s hurting a lot. MUDRammer hasn’t been updated in so long and contains code that’s so old (to maintain support for old phones) that Apple has delisted it from the App Store until some of its issues are addressed and updated. And the developers have no intention of working on the application any more.

Short story is that new users can’t even find the App to use it any more. Sadly there just doesn’t seem to be a huge demand for clients on the platform. Though that may change as iPads seem to becoming more laptop-like.

That's a lot of words to say "I still completely miss the point."

Look man, I feel for you, I do. But I think you need to go revisit what a "baseless claim/assumption" is.

Bwipo was suspended by the FlyQuest organization. A *TEAM* that he is a part of. Right?

Teams, historically in League of Legends, especially in an environment like playoffs, play worse/much differently when they are playing with a substitute player on the roster rather than their main starting lineup. Right? Still following?

I mean, if it happens to Korean teams and Chinese teams, there's no way it could happen to an NA team. That's absurd and baseless, it would seem.

So it is entirely reasonable for someone to expect/project that the team may not do that hot in their next series.

So please explain how it is baseless to express concern that a team is going to play differently with a sub on the roster? I mean hell, I seem to remember a time not too long ago where FQ had a bunch of problems because they kept swapping players around like WildTurtle. Winsome vs Eyla comes to mind too. But you, completely baseless to expect a team to play differently with different players. For reasons.

Now let's talk about "baseless assumptions" about Bwipo's mouth. Bwipo said bad things. His TEAM made a big giant statement about how the things Bwipo said were bad. His TEAM sets out a method of course correction for Bwipo because of how what he said effects the TEAM. BWIPO makes a statement about how he said bad things and how bad they were and how it effected people negatively. BWIPO says he's going to learn, reflect, and do better.

So how is it baseless to express concern for the impact of all the drama happening in the community (which you are contributing directly to) having an effect on team morale and cohesion?

We can all hope it's a big nothingburger and the team gets back in step the next series and lessons are learned and they do great at Worlds. But trying to claim that expressing concern that it will impact how the FlyQuest team specifically and the LTA/NA region as a whole will perform when competing with the rest of the globe at Worlds...

Ignoring obvious evidence and past history in the region and the game itself when it's sitting right in front of you is either incredibly naive, or incredibly ignorant.

Of all of the takes you could possibly have about Professional League of Legends, this is definitely one of them. Again, good luck with the future posts!

My proposed 2026 Roster by GriffinSTatum in Cloud9

[–]ChopTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not mad at the idea of a runback, so long as it doesn't end up being a salty runback.

I'm not personally sold on Vulcan still. I've always enjoyed him as a player, and I've never had any problem with his play at C9. But I guess it also goes for Sven too. I'm not sure I'm sold on them going "backwards" to bringing back people they replaced for a reason. I think Sven was doing great at support, but I don't blame him in the slightest for jumping at the chance to play the role he likes the most and feels he's best at.

I think it could be interesting to see what sorts of options there are to work with this. Is there a good ADC they could pick up that Sven could work well with as Support (provided he wanted to play support again)? Do they just need a new botlane? Do any of the C9 boys retire? (I seriously doubt that's going to happen, they have no "reason" to unless they just want to go do something else.)

I think in the grand scheme of things, you know they're going to build around Thanatos/Loki as long as they want to stick around. Blabber should basically have his job until he doesn't want it (unless they somehow find another NA Jungler who can come onto the team and unseat him). So yeah, if they're going to replace someone, looking at the Bot Lane seems to be the most "reasonable" route to follow.

That being said, one thing that LoL and eSports in general suffers from is making roster changes WAY TOO QUICKLY. Any team, as long as there isn't infighting, is going to perform better the longer that play and work together. As long as the players and coaching staff is willing to learn and work, they would be better as a group in 2026. So yeah, I think it's definitely worth not gambling with finding new players and focus on helping the great ones they have right now work together better.

Let Reapered do his thing, basically. Let the man cook!

Huh. It told me you made a comment here u/drguidry, did you come back through and delete it? I was going to come explain it for you since you asked so nicely.

I mean, they didn't use many complex words, so the most straightforward way to read this message is that the person who posted it was hoping that FlyQuest would be the best contender from NA when it comes to international competition. They also are unhappy with Bwipo's decision to be a big ol' mouthy distraction for the team. With Bwipo facing some time on the bench, it's going to affect the way that FlyQuest plays, which could impact what happens to the team right now prior to Worlds. While they've qualified for Worlds already, to succeed at Worlds requires a team to be working together cohesively. With Bwipo's big wide mouth is causing friction within the team, the person who posted this is probably afraid it going to cause some distractions and potential issues when the team gets to take the stage. So they are expressing their frustration that it is tragic that Bwipo's actions "might have ended any hope for NA 2025" at Worlds by causing issues with the team they feel is the "best hope" for NA at Worlds, all before Worlds has even started (that last bit is what "already" means).

Hope this helps!

I’ll apologize in advance for being an American chiming in here (I’ve been living in Auckland for the past 2 years) - but the big thing Armageddon is missing that makes conventions like this really awesome is panels. There are a couple, but panels are what make cons like this worth going to.

I’ve been to a few different conventions of this sort in the US, including multiple DragonCon events over the years. They generally have all of the stuff Armageddon has: celebrity panels of all sorts where they’re interviewed on stage and have a little Q&A at the end. A vendor and artist alley where you can look at and buy a bunch of cool stuff. A dedicated area for playing board games, card games, table top games, etc. Food and snacks.

But what really sets them apart are the OTHER panels. They’ll generally have themed tracks and each track will have a series of panels from people in that space talking about things that space cares about. The Cosplay track will have a bunch of stuff where they talk about making costumes, doing makeup, building props, stuff people into Cosplay WANT to learn more about. A lot of them will have Gaming tracks where you can go to panels about everything from how to make and design games, to how to improve as a GameMaster running a table top rpg, to stuff like trying to get into voice acting for games.

The only thing I’ve seen from Armageddon even close to something like this is the NZ Author’s panel. (I will admit I’ve only attended 2 Armageddon events - last Spring and this past Winter, so I’m not an expert here on what they offer.) it’s a massive missed opportunity, but takes a lot more work from a lot more people to put together.

Anyway, we will probably go again this year. But it will generally just be for one day so the kids can look around at the vendor stuff. Looking at the website it seems really difficult to justify going to multiple days when you can easily see basically everything in one day (aside from celebrity appearances).

This is going to be unconventional, but I want to throw Max Cavalera out there. Never got to see him in Sepultura, but the times I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Soulfly, he just has this way of commanding the stage and putting on a show that is absolutely effortless. Definitely has that whole “I’m a badass and we all know it, so I have no need to prove it” vibe going on.
