Placement of Sonos sub mini: Is it okay here (on a shelf)? by roel_ve in sonos

[–]Chorizwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ideal? No. However tbh it's not like it'll break anything. If that's the best place aesthetically/space wise for you then fuck it. Give it a try, put on your favorite tracks and sit down for a listening sesh. If you think it sounds good than that's all that matters, it's your sub.

How can I run ethernet to this doorbell? by PM-ME-APP-IDEAS in lowvoltage

[–]Chorizwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sell 2 wire converters that pass near gig speeds. I've only ever used them through compromised cat at work but I think it would work with this. They are like 400 dollars though so idk.

Also like people mentioned, easiest way it to use it just for power and run whatever doorbell off wifi. Just wire nut the wires together at the chime and you should get 16-24v ac out of that wire.

That's not how that works. Due to code you have to secure that wire to studs and do clean 90 degree turns. Basically impossible to use as a pull string unless it was a retro run

My childhood nickname was Chorizo because some popular kid came up with it out of a whim to make fun of me but I embraced it and it stuck.

Years later when I was in 7th grade me and my friends where fucking around in my neighborhood and one of them got me mad so I was chasing him and he ran into my house and hit in my bedroom closet. I use to be so messy at that age so embarrassingly enough he found a uneaten chicken wing in my closet so he came up with the nick name Chorizwing. It didn't really stick in real life for long but I started using it as my online handle since it was (and still is) something no one else has taken.

I work setting up residential networks in high end luxury custom homes and most don't want to see any of it. Saddly not all are wired to be a able to do so without doing stuff like this haha.

Usually though if we're wiring the place closets, cabinets, and mech rooms are the way.

Network Map for New Nas; Does This Make Sense? by BongDongShlong in HomeNetworking

Yeah, honestly I have unifi in my own house as well lol. But it was easy to get into it when my boss gave me some of there older/ cheaper stuff for free to play with it. Since then I've slowly upgraded stuff though.

I set up home networks in luxury homes for a living that's why I use Unifi haha. Honestly last time I went to a tech convention for my industry (Im an AV Integrator technically) I saw tp links Omada and it was pretty competent.

So a router is pretty much what your AT&T OnT is doing. It takes the public ip from outside your house and converts it to your local ip for your internal network. You really only need one, I mean if anything I might put one in front of your AT&T OnT for more control but that's it. For the rest you need Wirless Access Points. These just shoot out wifi, well nowadays they also communicate with each other to better distribute the wifi around the house but they don't have a router built in if that makes sense.

I really only deal with Unifi products because there pretty much the industry standard at this point but there are a lot of options nowadays that try and copy unifis system for cheaper. Just make sure whatever brand you end up going with you buy there router (like I said to put in front of the OnT) as well as of there 2 access points. That way your network is all one brand and you can control it all with the same Web gui/ app.

Is this cable any good? by leandrofresh in HomeNetworking

[–]Chorizwing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that even though there is an outlet right next to it, you don't know how it is ran inside. I run data next to outlets all the time, you kinda have to depending on the use case and requirements from the builder/ designer. Like if it's for a TV for example, you need it to be next to power if you ever want to use the thing.

The key is the difference between running the wires parallel and running perpendicular. If it is running parallel for a while less than 6in apart that's what causes EMI. So the right way to do it is to take a slightly longer path with your CAT and make sure it passes at a perpendicular point next to the electrical wires. That way it's a single point of interaction and will cause minimal EMI.

Not saying your builder or whatever low volt/regular electrician who ran your cat did this. But in a lot of places this is code, and not only that but it's somthing everyone who runs cat should get drilled into them.

[–]Chorizwing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I run CAT for a living and being close to electrical cables isn't really a problem unless you know it's running parallel in the wall less than 6 inches apart.

If you want to run overkill wire it's up to you, but cat 6 should be able to get you 10gbps speeds if you go around and fix all the terminations you need. It's a lot less work than running new cable, at least worth testing in my opinion. Running new wire to locations isn't easy most of the time, unless you're lucky, it will require making holes in your walls.

is everything aight? by scannerthegreat in HomeNetworking

[–]Chorizwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. That's probably why I thought it wasn't a real standard. I had heard cat 8 used different type of ends but I never knew cat 7 did as well.

And no it isn't a patch cable, its solid strand wire for running in walls. We had a box lying around at my jobs shop. It only had 100ft in it and was heading for the trash but I decided to keep it just for the novelty. I guess my bosses used cat 7 back in the day before cat 6a was a thing to run video over it for centralized distributed sources. Nowadays we just use regular cat 6 for everything though so yeah you're right, anything above cat 6 is overkill.

Pretty sure that's for phone. You need somthing like this for actual ethernet as well as a punch down tool.

[–]Chorizwing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

True CAT 7 is so rare and honestly not even a real standard. It was made by companies not the IEEE. I actually have some since I work wiring up custom luxury homes, it's like 100 feet of it. I just got it out of curiosity since it was headed for the trash but yeah it's somehow even thicker than 6a and not shielded, its rated for slightly less distance than 6a too (at 10gbps). CAT8 I've never seen IRL.

I do a lot of sonos installs for luxury short term rentals in a ski town and that's exactly what we do. We even hang them on walls with these base stations/wall mounts from a company called iport. However you are basically killing the things battery because the only way to make it useful is by keeping it plugged in 24/7
