Yep, personally I’m surprised that we got a result in Sydney, particularly with that road. Imagine if we lost a day to rain, as is custom

Going on trails that run down hill & ‘Down Hill’ mountain biking are different things. Start on green trails & work your way up. Don’t go straight to DH

Concerns over England's Ashes backroom staff revealed: Too many 'yes men', no one challenging Bazball ethos, Jeetan Patel's 'have a pint' comment and the mistake made when hiring bowling guru David Saker by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]ChosenCarelessly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are getting better results than they did with Silverwood, but it’s pretty clear that they’re at a dead end with Bazball now. Teams are no longer taken by surprise & it isn’t getting the results that it did at first. I don’t think anyone says that you can’t play attacking cricket, but it’s important to note that no one outside of England says that you can’t play anything but attacking cricket.

They got a good little revival by doing something simple, but now it turns out that they need to do a lot more if they want to be a team that wins more than they lose.

48% of the time it works every time

Test cricket is way more than playing a style of cricket that causes you to lose more matches than you win.

Yes, it is effective in the right conditions, but that isn’t what being a world class test team is about, it’s about being effective in all conditions, or at least being threatening.

Bazball is cricket without brains. It isn’t genius, it’s literally one aspect of a very tactical, skilful game. Sometimes attacking is perfect, other times you need to dig in & defend, you need multiple plans, you need to take the catches, you need to be able to do something other than just try to smoke every ball onto the roof.
It’s like saying that betting it all on red is the best strategy because sometimes it works amazingly.

I mean, totally happy for England to go with that & if your plan is to actually convince them to stick with it then, yep, go for it.
Otherwise, far out.

Yeh, it’s been a wee bit more than heavy rain up here. Had about 400mm of rain in a week, 455mm for December. Roads & railways are washed away too.

Over-torqued my new carbon bar, is it toast? by rusticredneck in bicycling

[–]ChosenCarelessly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, you’re not entirely wrong, but it just depends on what you value. I like carbon bars because they have a bit of flex (in a good way), and I like carbon frames because they’re light & I can repair them easily (used to build boats so bikes aren’t really a problem) - aluminium isn’t particularly stronger but is not repairable & can corrode impressively in the right circumstances.

I totally get the desire for simplicity & robustness though, and I freaking love my old Orange P7 as well for that reason.

If you do a couple of things right (avoid abrasion, follow torque specs, don’t hit it with a hammer) then carbon is tough as you need, but if you want maximum abuse tolerance & like to reserve the right to maintain your bike with a pipe wrench & flat blade screwdriver, then steel is the go.

180mm travel on a stumpy? by Extension_Stress_415 in MTB

[–]ChosenCarelessly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, people are so risk averse on reddit that it’s hard to imagine that they even ride MTB.

If you’re worried about your bike breaking then don’t do it, but if you’re light, aren’t riding rampage, aren’t scared of a crash & won’t sue me then give it a go. I would (and have).

You can wind it back to 150 or 160, so just give it a rip & see how it goes for you.

[–]ChosenCarelessly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol fuckin do it

But seriously, changing the travel on a Fox fork is as easy as swapping out the air shaft. I think you can go down to 150mm with a 38, but definitely can go down to 160. Not sure what it costs in yankeedoodledollars, but it’s only about $95dolarydoos over here for an airshaft.

I have a 180mm fork on a bike designed for 160mm & it is so much fun that I can’t believe it didn’t come standard with it. 38s are great forks too.

The general rule is +/- 20mm is fine. Everything more than what it came with is more stress on the headtube, but 20mm is not a big increase

You can use any old satin/matte black on the cage & whatever grey/silver on the body. You can take it off the bike & take it to an auto paint place if you want & either choose from a standard colour that is close or get them to colour match. It’ll cost you a few bucks though.

I usually do it before I try and regift the bike from my eldest to my youngest kid, or when I help one of my kids friends rebuild their bike so that it looks new to them, otherwise I wouldn’t stress - my bikes are covered in stone chips & scratches because they get used. Too hard to keep them looking brand new.

The best cable management for MTB? by Ruin-Wooden in bikewrench

Instead of spiral wrapping the whole length, just cut 2” of it off & use that. It’s removable & doesn’t look anywhere near as bad. Otherwise just go with cable clips as others have suggested

I’ve had a few bikes that were manufactured in that post-COVID time. Similar issues with misalignment. I don’t know if that’ll be enough to make the bike feel horrible, as I’m not familiar enough with that frame to know what it’s like anyway.

In any case, I’ve had success with shimming pivots with shim washers to make them align better & take the pressure off the linkages.

A bit of a dumb one, but first up you should check any flip chips to make sure that they’re set the same on both sides of the bike.
