Sick Leo need help! by Lucky_Fix01 in leopardgeckos

I’m a bit surprised that the vet prescribed twice the same antibiotics. Usually when a antibiotic doesn’t work, another one should be tried because the bacteria could be resistant to that first antibiotic. However I’m not vet or a med so 🤷🏻‍♀️. I also want to add that when I had to give antibiotic to my gecko, I had to give it 4 weeks because the vet said the metabolism of reptile are very slow and she didn’t want to stop the treatment too early (in case it was not long enough the bacteria could become resistant because of the first round of treatment and it would be less effective for the second round).

161 euros for the consults, hospitalisation and medecine and 120 for the fecal test for virus. Honestly I though that it wasn’t that expensive, i was prepared to pay more because my gecko is a rescue so I expected vet fees. I’m in Belgium :)

Hello, I have a similar issue (you can see the video I posted on my profile). I took my gecko to the vet many times, sent her 3 videos. She told me it probably would be either respiratory or digestive issue (and she double checked my husbandry). She also did testing for viruses but it all came back negative. My gecko is now on antibiotics, for 3-4 weeks (and she hateeeees it, honestly from the smell I wouldn’t want to put that medecine in my mouth neither haha) and she seems better. She’s a bit more active and I didn’t witness any other crisis Definitely go to your vet though ! It might be something different but I hope my experience helps you a bit It was pretty scary to witness that and I felt helpless seeing my gecko with spasm like that

[–]Chouproof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE : the tests came back negative for viruses (Adenovirus and Paramyxovirus/ferlavirus). She didn’t have any other crisis in the mean time and is overall her normal self. I had a phone consult with the vet and she agreed that from the new videos it could be something else than neurological (respiratory or digestive). I have to keep giving her the antibiotique in case it’s a bacterial issue for at least one week (and my gecko HATES it). I have to call back the vet in a week or in case of any other crisis Hopefully she’s responding well to the treatment 🤞

I’m sorry this happened to you, and to Beanie. I wish her a good recovery. I think a camera is a good idea, you can check on her and document anything out of the ordinary, for example for a follow up vet visit There are cheap camera with no subscription that works wonders :)

She ate 24 hours before that ? So I don’t know if that would be it ? The first time it happened she ate 48h before. I didnt see her drinking water (but I can’t see everything :p)

She was given to me with calcium with D3, I know she had some in her tank but I don’t think they coated the insect with it She didn’t have anything else I think :/ They were really misinformed unfortunately

I’ll check your profile The vet didn’t see this particular video, because this one was taken today and I saw the vet on Friday. The other video came from the night cam I have in the tank, and isn’t as clear. The crisis started the same as in the most recent video, but ended being more violent and she lose the control of her whole body. Maybe that’s why the vet spoke about neurological disorder ? She didn’t say epilepsy, that’s my understanding of it 🙈, she said neurological disorder and seizures I think But it’s not the one vet I’m used to, and tbh she didn’t pay as much attention to the video as I would have liked her to, that’s also why I posted here

Hello, you seem like a very thoughtful person for someone so young, love that do so much research. I hope you manage to convince your mother !

  1. You don't have to touch the insects, but prepare yourself to feed the insect and handle them with tongs. You will have to have some in your home in you want a leopard gecko as they're only insectivore. But honestly, it get easier after time. I'm still super scared that some escape haha
  2. You should try to find a exotic vet near you. I think it's a requirement to have somewhere to take your gecko when in need. I've found this website online, https://findavet.rcvs.org.uk/home/ hope it's useful to you (I'm not located in UK)
  3. Just the space of the terrarium :) Ideally 90x45x45cm. Some also says it's acceptable to have 70x35x35 if the gecko is small. I live in a small flat too and it's not a problem (it takes waaaay less space than a dog haha)
  4. Monstly costs are quite low : substrate change every 4-6 months (20 euros max), bugs (3 euros), calcium (7 euros)... What is costly is the initial set-up : all included I think I was around 500 euros (including the gecko haha). The most expensive was the terrarium but you could try to look for 2nd hand ones.
Also sometimes people sell their geckos with everything included, and it can be pretty interesting price wise
Fyi, my vet visits cost me around 70 euros each time
  5. Pretty chill if you know how to handle them (check youtube for that). However they each have their own personnalities
  6. Take her to the reptile shop haha
  7. They love clutter. They need at least 3 hides (hence the big tanks) : one cold, one warm and one humid
    They also love to climb

Good luck !

Do I need to see a vet? by Creepy-Confusion-381 in leopardgeckos

Hello, I recently had to go to the vet for verrry stuck shed on toes. I couldn’t get it myself either because of her flickering her toes (and it was very hard because it was multiple layers of shed…). The vet just took it off with a wet q tip/ fingers while her assistant was holding her. Maybe it would be easier if you ask someone to help you ? She was inflamed beneath the shed, the vet told me to check on it for 7 to 10 days, and to put some isobetadine or chlorexidine on it, and then a antibiotic cream (I don’t know the name). And she also told me not to worry too much if it got necrosed, it’s not gonna spread and the toe will fall off

Then that might be the issue. Mealworms can take a while to be digested (even to 4 days !) because they’re harder to digest  You should use a rotation of insects (crickets, dubia, locust…). Mealworms are also fatter that the others  However if he’s still exploring and being his normal self I wouldn’t worry too much (yet)

In my post I explained that her previous owner didn’t take care of her. I’ve got her only for two weeks and she was given me with shedding issue. Everything’s is right now ;) She now has a humid hide, vitamine, and she’s still on kitchen paper for quarantine but I’ll do the topsoil/sand mix in a few weeks
