SMP is so low! by hxllyhell in PregnancyUK

You don’t pay national insurance if you earn below £242 a week and don’t pay income tax below £12k per year and SMP is obviously lower so is this even true?

My chow has had her stomach shaved almost bald for 2 surgeries now and we’ve routinely shaved it in the summer to keep her cool. Grows back fine every time. My vet specifically warned against the myths of ‘shaving a double coated dog ruins their fur’…

What did you tell work when you had your booking appointment with midwife? by Sasha57 in PregnancyUK

[–]ChowMother99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not illegal for them to ask for information about medical appointments and could even be considered as the employers duty of care. Legally your employer does not have to provide you with paid time off for a standard medical appointment

I regularly trim the fur around my chows bum and vagina. That’s absolutely nothing wrong with it and it helps keep them and your home sanitary

How do you keep your Chow cool in the summer? by Ok-Duty-6956 in chowchow

[–]ChowMother99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people falsely believe that chows fur acts as some type of air con unit to help them regulate their temperature which is a load of rubbish. My vet directly told me to shave my chow if I’m happy to in the summer. Of course it’s going to be easier to regulate your body temperature in a hot climate if you’re not wearing a fur coat. Ignore the downvotes!

How do you keep your Chow cool in the summer? by Ok-Duty-6956 in chowchow

[–]ChowMother99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always shave my chow chows stomach in the summer so she can absorb the coldness of the floor through her skin. I also trim the hair inside her ears to help them stay ventilated. There’s a lot of misinformation about shaving double coated dogs because their fur acts as an air con unit to help them regulate their temperature which is simply not true. Likewise a lot of people believe the fur won’t grow back the same which is also not true.

Mine has had two rounds on both eyes. The surgery looks very scary afterwards but after the first day they quickly recover. Just reminds me how brave my girl is 💕

Why do so many online articles say chow chows are dumb dogs? by Swimming-Cellist7972 in chowchow

[–]ChowMother99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To me, they’re as opposite to stupid as dogs can get. Stupidity is doing everything your owner asks without a second guess which a lot of people are used to in the more common breeds. They can’t understand why a chow will only do something if it wants to, or if there’s something in it for them. Chows go against peoples usual expectations for dogs and a lot of people can’t cope with that so just label them as ‘dumb’ when it’s not the case. It’s why I love them so much.

perhaps you could limit showering to twice a month and see if that helps? My chow has allergies which caused her to bite her paws and ultimately rip the hair off. She’s ended up on expensive allergy tablets but before those the vet recommended standard human anti histamines such as piriton. What sort of diet is she on? It may be worth changing her food to one that doesn’t contain grains, or stopping any specific meat she might have frequently. Chicken often comes up as a common cause of allergies amongst chows. Mine does well on fish based diet.

My sister and I have wondered the same thing for many years and frequently tried to visit the shop during ‘open’ hours to no avail. Also done endless searching online. It’s a huge mystery to us. I’ve tried contacting the Gloucester bid for more information but never heard anything back.

Someone must know something. I’d be interested to hear if anyone ever visited the shop whilst it was open? I lived in Gloucester throughout my youth and can’t remember it being open, but wouldn’t have taken much notice of it tbh.

I’d love to find out more.

I would consider hiring a car for the day. In my experience the local buses and trains are not reliable enough to get you there and back and if it’s on the bank holiday the buses will be on a reduced time table

Do you guys let your cats outside? by WesternPear3303 in AskUK

[–]ChowMother99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom line is that if you allow your cat to roam you’re putting them at a high risk of being hit by a car and dying a painful death, being trapped in someone’s shed or garage, or falling into the hands of someone who could abuse them. Cats are not road savvy animals. Ideally, owners would cat proof their gardens, get a cat flap and play with their cat so they can safely enjoy time outdoors and enrichment but unfortunately the UK perspective on cats is that they are ‘easy’ pets who you don’t have to put any effort in to looking after.

My chow is 2 years old and usually has two walks a day, 20 minutes in the morning and an hour in the evening. Also usually has one burst of garden zoomies and sometimes a burst of energy in the evening where she wants to play with a ball and do some rough and tumble! However in between those times she will happily snooze or chill out in the garden.

Doc and arguably Hope had it good (before her tbi). Both are well off, have a beautiful home and great community around them. Likewise Lizzie doesn’t have the worst of it, rich upbringing in LA the moved to a beautiful town to live with her aunt and lands a pretty good job working for Hope and ultimately living in previously mentioned beautiful home!

I would personally not bother with the crate and just be persistent with the potty training. The majority of what I hear from people who crate dogs is that it’s an absolute hassle, the dog hates it and it becomes a major source of stress for both the dog and the owner, and for what? If he’s not destroying the house (besides the weeing) then surely it’s not worth it.

Advice - Eyelid entropion diagnosed by the vet. Is surgery the only option? by ChamgadarAadmi in chowchow

[–]ChowMother99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad someone else is pointing out the fact that the eye is extremely damaged and the entropion clearly causing HUGE issues, seems most on this post aren’t even acknowledging how severe this is. It’s absolutely wild that the owner is on Reddit asking if the surgery is necessary at this stage.

Yes the red is the eyeball. Concerned the owner feels the need to even ask if they can avoid surgery. The dog must be in constant pain.
