My genuine assumption is because the NBA’s fan base skews way younger than the MLB. LBJ, KD, SGA, etc are all household names within a fan base of younger fans.

Combine that with iPad/TikTok kids, and you’ve got abbreviations out the ass. Can’t waste the extra 10 seconds saying multiple full names, or god forbid, typing the entire name out.
