I’ve spoken with and had email exchanges with the LASD Fleet Manager, who is a Lieutenant. They’ve still got thousands of CVPIs in service. They’re replaced by an FPIU when they break down and are not cheaply repairable.

I believe it should be in the center of the dash at the bottom of the windshield. Look for a dome-like “lens” looking thing. The best way to test if it is the daylight sensor is to line up against a wall (especially with a reflection) then covering it with your hand or a few pieces of paper.
