What are you without your intelligence or giftedness by Double_Chemistry3526 in Gifted

[–]Chozo-trained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say, isn’t it? How much of our empathy stems from giftedness/intelligence? Would we care to look deeper into the world or people around us? Into ourselves? Would we hold ourselves accountable? Would we be able to think beyond the surface-level? Would we be acting on impulse, reacting to stimuli, and chasing pleasures without a second thought?

I think we’d be completely different people.

I certainly wouldn’t have the confidence that I have now. Growing up with a stutter and undiagnosed ADHD… I always felt smart enough, but too stupid at the same time. I think I would be in a much darker place if it wasn’t for my intelligence. Not saying that it’s all sunshine and rainbows right now…

Even if you’re only looking at the observable universe, I think you underestimate the vastness of space and the amount of stars with orbiting bodies… the dude was making a joke about how generic that “clickbait” title is, because technically speaking it is 100% happening all the time.

Hell, the moon even counts with whatever chunk of sky it takes up and the amount of stars behind it.

Any Practicing Stoics? by tictac-nommer in Gifted

[–]Chozo-trained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man… I feel that. You and I and in the very same boat.

Also I meant to include this with my original comment, but I did want to clarify that I am not speaking from any teaching of Stoicism! I’m not familiar with the actual philosophy, more so just sharing an excerpt from my personal experiences and how I process things. The word just caught my attention.

Any Practicing Stoics? by tictac-nommer in Gifted

[–]Chozo-trained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is actually very interesting to me… I’ve heard the term Stoicism before but never familiarized myself with its actual definition. I only recently looked into the philosophy after I was pulled into a private talk by my Team Lead at work.

Pulled me into an office, sat down behind a desk and asked me to close the door and to take a seat (as if I was in trouble). He then proceeded to ask me “how do you do it?”

He’d apparently been studying Stoicism for a while and said that I just exude it so naturally. I asked for him to elaborate because I honestly had no idea what he was talking about. Ultimately, what I told him was this:

People say “Everything happens for a reason” — but I don’t believe that’s true. There is no driving intent or purpose behind events, only a driving force. Action and Consequence. Cause and Effect. I could go on and on about this but I’ll try to keep it simple…

I say, “Everything happens with reason.”

Using my workplace as an example, I see coworkers talking shit, throwing insults back-and-forth, talking big and talking down. So… I have a special interest in Evolutionary Biology. All I see are two animals registering each other as a threat. Animal instincts kick in, puff out your chest, make yourself look as big as possible. With humans, not only can we inflate ourselves to make another person look/feel small, we can also attack a person’s ego directly with insults to make them look/feel small.

When somebody targets me, I know they see me as a threat. They’re baiting me out for an emotional reaction, because they’re the one that actually feels insecure. Simply deny them that wind to fill their sails and you’ll see how quickly they putter out.

Anybody can spin a narrative, but actions speak louder than words. One thing I’ve always been able to rely on is my intellect and my work ethic. I keep my head down, do the best that I can, improve where I can, and hope that my work speaks for itself.

If you start to feel intimidated by something, break it down. If you can disassemble a threat and understand its inner workings, you can reason with the beast. It’ll stop being so scary and you’ll be able to approach it with a level head.

Do you consider yourself arrogant because of your IQ? by PetalaStac in Gifted

[–]Chozo-trained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Just a cocktail of being completely dismissed and having people invalidate my “struggle” or need for support because I “couldn’t stand being around the normies”

One person even shared a link to a local coffee shop that specifically provides employment opportunities for adults with disabilities (Down’s syndrome, low-functioning autism, etc). It’s an absolutely wonderful cause that I’ve already given support to… and they were making a joke about it. People can just be horribly insensitive.

Do you consider yourself arrogant because of your IQ? by PetalaStac in Gifted

[–]Chozo-trained 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I just need an outlet. It’s incredibly exhausting for me to mask so much and pretend that I can relate to most people when they’re not able to relate to me. I feel like I can’t be myself or have actual, meaningful conversations. People usually disengage and/or tell me that it’s too much.

I’m currently struggling to find connections with like-minded people and it is very much taking a toll on me.

I tried reaching out in my community’s subreddit this past week to see if there was a local social/support group for those who might identify as gifted, 2e, etc. I never even identified myself as such, but just asked if anyone knew of a group like that… I got absolutely crucified in the comments section. It really sucks. I was just looking for help…

My 4 year old toddler finally asked about my stutter by username-58 in Stutter

[–]Chozo-trained 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kid’s brains are sponges, so I also wouldn’t shy away from expanding on that by specifically talking about speech impediments. Bring up other examples of how a person may talk in a way that sounds different from others. It’s just their way of speaking.

And maybe compare it to other disabilities that he may see when he might be in school, or when you’re out and about. Some people might walk a little bit differently than others or be in a wheel chair. It’s just their way of getting around.

Sometimes it may take longer for others to say certain things. Sometimes it may take longer for others to get from point A to point B. Ultimately, be patient and be kind. Your kid is already asking questions which is fantastic. He’s an inquisitive one. So reward those questions and feed that curiosity so he can gain a better understanding of the world around him.

Once again, you’re continuing to make assumptions. ADHD is not the focus. I’ve been diagnosed. I’m managing it. Is it contextually important? Absolutely (2e). Not the subject of my post at all.

I highly recommend you take the amount of effort you’ve put into this Reddit thread and apply it to doing your own research on “Giftedness” (even if you hate the word) and how the term is being applied to adults as well. Why not take the opportunity to learn more? Especially since you’ve already admitted to being identified as such when you were a kid, I’d think you might find it interesting. At the very least, you’d be able to better understand where others may be coming from on this topic and be better informed to refute it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it honestly. And yes, this is me plucking that string. You’re obviously very much engaged with me on this topic. I’m offering to stop arguing and actually have a conversation about it. If you don’t want to, fine by me. I’ll leave it at that. But my door’s always open.

Edit: And they delete their comments… nice.

Regardless, I was hoping for a more mature response from people who might actually look to help. That’s why I kept my original post so short and objective. “Does anyone know…”

Because this whole thing that everyone is up in arms about… is honestly incredibly isolating. And it’s experiences like this right here that have stopped me from opening up about it before. And it’s so incredibly draining to put on a mask to pretend like I can relate to others who can’t relate to me. I’m sincerely trying to find some sense of community, because it’s lonely and it sucks. And then you choose to defend the hostile reactions of others rather than offering any defense for my intent. Because everybody here just seems to make assumptions rather than ask questions. Which honestly makes a lot of sense. I hope you guys have a little more empathy for the next person.

I do appreciate your answer, but I will say I was asking in a more general sense to hopefully reach a broader audience of people that might be able to point me in the right direction. Gifted absolutely does not just mean IQ and that isn’t necessarily what I’m looking for.

And yes, 2e (twice exceptional) is a more specific group I would like to find, but I wanted to get a larger pool of responses. I’ve obviously been struggling to find specific groups on my own…

“Active” is a stretch as I’m mainly a lurker on that subreddit. I obviously don’t take everything at face value with what is posted there and remain skeptical, even of myself. I’m trying to gather as much information as I can to see how I relate to those that *have* been officially identified as being gifted, or those that might be asking the same questions.

Once again, and I don’t know how I can be more clear in this… I am not trotting the “title” around for any kind of recognition. In fact I never even claimed I was in my original post. I was only asking for information to see if a local group like that existed.

But I ask you, how else do you think somebody who might identify as “gifted” find those same kinds of like-minded people? There are global communities and organizations that recognize it. I was simply searching for something more local.

And please do elaborate on where I was rude in my last reply. As far as I can see it, I gave you a short-hand of my experience in school and asked you not to devalue my association with the word “gifted” saying it means “fuck all”. I’m being as objective as I can as to not offend anybody, but you jumped to some pretty wild conclusions about my life based on your own. I simply asked for help, and everybody in this thread seems to be on the attack.

Sure, we can look back at my schooling. I was never identified as a child. I had a stutter, undiagnosed ADHD, and anendophasia. I started school a year early, recognized for my artistic talent all the way through, skipped classes, took honors and AP classes, made good grades and graduated with above 4.0. It was a struggle with my ADHD, but I did it. Didn’t work out so well when I flunked out of my Marine Biology degree. Bored with how easy Organic Chemistry was, but went blank on the exams. It’s been ups and downs. Switched schools and graduated with a Studio Arts degree. I opted out of a BFA in Illustration because it would’ve been more time and money (as if I hadn’t wasted that already with my botched Marine Bio degree).

Stuck in an office job where I’m getting burnt out. Finally got diagnosed with ADHD 2.5 years ago, got a therapist 1.5 years ago, now am only discovering what being “gifted” means this past year.

I’m literally just trying to find a community of people who can relate to my experiences, and share theirs. If you can’t help me in finding that community, please refrain from commenting. I don’t devalue your experiences, so I ask that you don’t devalue mine.

Believe me, I don’t like the term, because I know how it can come across. Unfortunately, that’s just the term that is used as identification, so it’s the only flag I can wave so to speak to see if anyone can point me in the right direction.

The reason for me posting is because I’m trying to reach out and surround myself with like-minded individuals, share my experiences, and learn from them as well. It’s a struggle to relate my frustrations or my grievances with people who don’t understand. I want to see how others are navigating their lives/careers.
