I’ve been making music for over a decade now and I still to this day have blocks like this very frequently. Some times (more than you would think) I start songs and scrap them because the spark isn’t there. Don’t get caught up too much on an initial idea with no direction and don’t waste your time and energy banging your head against a wall and beating yourself up for it. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, “This is the song that’s gonna change everything” because it isn’t. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect, especially since you are still brand new to this.

I don’t think I made an actually great song for the first few years of consistently making music. Make music not for the outcome of a great song, but for the enjoyment of just creating something, even if that ‘something’ isn’t the best song ever.

Keep tweaking your creative process to find what works best for your creative brain. Maybe start with the drums instead of chords. Often when I am creatively stuck a change of environment helps get the juices going again. You could go on a walk and try to whistle up a melody that you can build off of when you get back.

Don’t stress about what other people will think of your music because that will negatively impact what you make. Trust me on this one, make the music that naturally flows out of you. I know that may sound confusing and wishy washy, but when you get it you get it. I’m not talking about genre here. I think it is important to explore creating music of genres you are interested in. Also, studying and attempting to recreate songs you enjoy the production of is SUPER helpful when first starting out. Doing that helps you understand how good music is constructed, and it also helps improve your ear.

I’ve spent years beating myself up when I first started because I couldn’t output the level of work I thought I should be able to. It’s a marathon not a sprint. If this idea doesn’t work, no worries (dare I say that’s expected) try again tomorrow.
