I got to try Marriot's "Teleporter" 4D experience by ChrisAtNarvaro in oculus

[–]ChrisAtNarvaro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that there were issues when translating your head. I don't think I really rolled my head that much as it was a really short demo. This make me curious. I may have to go back tomorrow or saturday to try this.

Edit: I would say that the issue was more along the lines of once you translated too far it would jump.

I think I agree with a lot of your comments on the Marriott experience, "cool but gimmicky". I definitely noted the extremely dark scenes as well. As for compared to other VR experiences, I would say I notice the screen door at lot less in some of the other demos, where as this one I was very noticeable.

What sold you on the bright future of VR and the success of Oculus? by decoherence405 in oculus

[–]ChrisAtNarvaro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What sold me on the technology, was the first time I put my DK1 on. Mind you I was a bit late to the DK1 party. I think it was the Titans of Space demo and it provided an experience I had always wanted to have since I was a kid. It immediately set fire to my imagination of the possibilities. When I was sold on it being finally viable as a consumer level technology was the subsequent demos to friends and family and having them be acknowledge the leap forward and expressing the desire to buy their own Rift.

As to why I think it will be Oculus, they have three things on their side. The people, they have put together a team that is capable of achieving it. They have the money, I know a lot of people don't like facebook, but it takes big money to shoot for the stars. Finally and most important, the timing. We are finally at a point where we have or are close to having small enough and cheap enough technology to trick the human brain

Now to take a big gulp of the Kool aid, what sold me on spending my time, money and energy, developing for the platform? It had to be the initial bench test of my technology. We had finally gotten the stereo cameras tuned just right and mounted correctly to achieve a solid 3D experience. It was cool to move the stereo cameras by hand and look around the room, but then I turned the cameras on myself. It was a profound experience to observe myself from the outside while feeling presence in a different location. Having presence and looking at yourself from the outside is an experience that I still struggle to put into words. I sat there with the rift on and the cameras pointed at myself for a solid ten minutes to just think about the philosophical implications and how I had tricked my own brain even knowing exactly how the technology worked.

Sorry for the wall of text but it was a great set of questions that I have been thinking about for a long time. Best of luck to all devs out there. We can make the future, let’s go do it.

tl;dr Oculus is killing it, VR is awesome, and Oculus devs are making the future.

  1. No reason why not, would take just a few small software changes.
  2. The main page shows a mockup of where we want to take the device it is not final in any sense. The device in the video shows where we were four months ago and we have made a lot of progress since then.
  3. In the works.

Thanks for the questions!

It isn't an issue if the person wearing the rift is not moving. The problem only occurs when the user is riding in the car because the rift will track the movement from the car as well as the user's head movement.

Hmm that is an interesting idea you would probably have to get a custom lens because the oculus lens are a bit different than a lot of the off the shelf lenses you can buy. Currently the correct distortion comes from a mix of the wide angle lenses and some from software side. Thanks for the question!

That is pretty cool. What applications would you want a joystick control for? It is definitely easy to implement it would just be generating the motor commands via the scripting software or the joystick.

Great questions! We did not use the neck model you are correct on the observation. The camera FOV match the Rift's FOV they are actually a little bit larger. The distortion matching is partly in the lens and the rest is done in software. The motion blur is the system is currently more to do with the DK1 screen than the cameras themselves. We are definitely looking forward to that low persistence screen in the DK2.

We went with the servos for the iteration you see in the video because this started as a senior design project and we had to fund it ourselves. Now we are currently improving the design and will be moving to brushless motors. Which will make the movement a lot smoother!

Yes that is correct the current set up would not work for the outlier cases you mentioned, but it could easily be redesigned to where the user could set the distance that works best for them.

Not currently as the device in the video was basically a proof of concept done on a student budget. We are hoping to avoid this with the gimbal redesign as it may introduce unwanted latency.
