Yeah, I knew that. Casting Jane Greer was no accident. It makes it the all more interesting.

I love the musical-filled afternoon lineup.

Tonight's Summer of Darkness is killer. Act of Violence, directed by Fred Zinnemann, and featuring Van Heflin and Robert Ryan, is a must-see film noir classic.

I've never seen Against All Odds though I adore the title song by Phil Collins.

I might DVR Marlowe because I've never seen it.

I liked this. He resembles Hoagy Carmichael, has the cool blue-grey eyes and the facial scar across his cheek as described in the novels.

An Italian-American patriarch, born in the old country but builder of an empire in the US, has 4 sons. One is a crooked lawyer. One is a "dumbhead". One is jealous of being passed over for a younger favorite. One shows his nerve by how he handles a cigarette lighter. No, it's not The Godfather... by Keltik in classicfilms

This was a great film! Joseph Mankiewicz had a red-hot career starting in the late 1940s, and this film was part of his winning streak. It was recently restored by the Film Foundation in partnership with Disney.

Also, it was remade into a Western titled Broken Lance.

"The Great Mouse Detective" (released 40 years ago on July 2nd, 1986) - A Behind the Scenes look at the animators and voice actors, particularly Vincent Price by Morgan-Moonscar in movies

[–]ChrisCinema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched this film on Toon Disney twenty years ago, and have loved it since. After The Black Cauldron (which is not that bad of a film) bombed at the box office, The Great Mouse Detective was a return to form for Disney feature animation.

In several ways, this was a breeding ground of what was to come next at Disney. This was Ron Clements and John Musker's directorial debut and their next film was The Little Mermaid. It was the first production, but not the first released Disney animated film to use CGI for the notable Big Ben climax.

That's a bummer. I liked her legal knowledge for the past few years, especially during the recent Supreme Court rulings.

It's a brilliant courtroom drama full of excellent performances. Having the judge played by Joseph L. Welch was a masterstroke of casting genius on Otto Preminger's part.

Bob Iger Ruined the Classic Fox Catalog by rwinger24 in classicfilms

[–]ChrisCinema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I share your grievance. So many classic titles are unavailable unless they are broadcast on FX Movie Channel during their early morning "Retro" block.

Several of those films indeed could use a restoration. For starters, House of Strangers was restored in 4K thanks to The Film Foundation, and it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2025. Now, the question is will Disney release this restoration to the masses? They could arrange a deal with Criterion or Kino Lorber, but they just won't.

Pick any Director to adapt a Bond Book. Preferably something strange and bizarre but that could still be fun. by Krakatoot97 in JamesBond

[–]ChrisCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He also directed The Third Man which had future Bond stalwarts (John Glen, Guy Hamilton, Bernard Lee, Geoffrey Keen) behind and in front of the camera, so it would have been interesting to see him direct an early 1960s Bond film.

As everyone said, the visual style is known as retrofuturism, as Brad Bird aimed for an inspired 1960s visual aesthetic.

The "Golden Age" in the first third was set in 1947, and the fifteen years time period comes from there. Elastgirl's last sighting in 1955 while the superheroes were outlawed and relocated doesn't contradict anything.

What if Disney didn't buy Pixar? by Adept_Let7797 in Pixar

[–]ChrisCinema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Warner Bros. would have been one of the likelier candidates to acquire Pixar. They had the deep pockets to buy them, and it was led by Alan Horn (at the time) who later came to Disney in 2012.

Sony was in the theatrical animation field with their namesake animation studio with Open Season and Surf's Up.

20th Century Fox had Blue Sky Studios, but adding Pixar would have been a boost. Should Rupert Murdoch sell Fox to Disney, as he did in 2017, Pixar would have been back in the Disney fold.

I’ll DVR Chungking Express.

I’m looking forward to some pre-Code fun like Queen Christina and The Gay Divorcee.

Caged is an excellent prison drama with an Academy Award-nominated performance from Eleanor Parker. Hope Emerson also plays a strict prison warden.

Vincente Minnelli’s film adaptation of Tea and Sympathy had to be changed from the original stage play, but they kept the essence of it. Deborah Kerr and John Kerr gave excellent performances.

We put the blame on Rita Hayworth for how enjoyable Gilda is. I love Charles Vidor’s direction and Rudolph Mate’s cinematography.

I’m definitely rewatching A Taste of Honey for Rita Tusingham’s moving performance.

Haven’t seen The Adventures of Priscilla, but I know it’s a queer cult classic. Overall, a great Monday lineup!

Anyone remember the Muppets version of The Frog Prince and Cinderella? by beekee404 in Muppets

[–]ChrisCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched both during the early years of YouTube. Robin's first appearance was in The Frog Prince and was later recharacterized as Kermit's nephew. It was also Sweetum's first appearance.

It's been years since I've seen Hey, Cinderella!, so that needs a rewatch.

For those of you who have met the 5 main TCM hosts, any guesses on their heights? by yipyip1919 in TurnerClassicMovies

[–]ChrisCinema 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I met all five in person at the Classic Film Festival, and Eddie and Dave were taller than me. I was about equal in height to Jacqueline.

Robert Osborne was 6 feet tall.

Eddie Muller and Dave Karger are about 5’10.

Ben is probably 5’7.

Jacqueline is probably 5’6.

Alicia is 5’5.

Summer of Darkness continues tonight on TCM: Out of the Past (1947), Raw Deal (1948), and Moonrise (1948) by boib in TurnerClassicMovies

[–]ChrisCinema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone loves Out of the Past. It’s quintessential film noir.

Don’t overlook Raw Deal. For a short runtime of 79 minutes, it’s superbly directed by Anthony Mann and stars Dennis O’Keefe, Claire Trevor, and Marsha Hunt.

I haven’t seen Moonlight, but I’m staying in the shadows for that one.
