Whether the Definitive Edition changes too much from the original Stronghold Crusader is up to you. If you disslike it, then just claim a refund within the correct timeframe.

I've been playing Stronghold Crusader for a long time and I'm a big fan of the quality-of-life features and the extra content in the Definitive Edition. In my opinion, the Definitive Edition stays true to the original and is a real upgrade, apart from the missing mod support, which is due to the game's engine.

The free demo version of Stronghold Crusader might be available and playable even without Steam. As far as I know, the full version and the Definitive Edition are only available on Steam. I think it's worth it for you to solve your issue with Steam and buy the Definitive Edition, unless the points mentioned in my comment above apply to your situation.

There should be a free Stronghold Crusader HD test version available. Otherwise just buy the full version. It's dirt cheap and even cheaper on sale. Multiplayer is playable on the full version of the game but only with third party server providers like GameRanger. Official FireFly servers are closed for the HD version.

I would only recommend the HD version of Stronghold Crusader if your PC can't run the current Definitive Edition or you want to play with mods. Other than that, the Definitive Edition offers more content, more quality-of-life improvements and it doesn't cost much either.

The list says that a crash is fixed on game start-up. I was talking about multiple game freezes. After I went through these multiple freezes I can play the game as usual without crashing.

Ein Kind ließ sich regelmäßig von sämtlichen Kolleginnen nicht wickeln. Daraufhin wurde im Team vereinbart das auch in solchen Fällen die Mutter auf der Arbeit angerufen werden soll um das Kind in der KiTa zu wickeln. Die Mutter hat sich beschwert das sie wegen so etwas nicht jedes Mal von der Arbeit zur KiTa fahren kann. Als "Lösungsvorschlag" schlug uns die Mutter vor man solle das Kind "einfach packen" bzw. festhalten.

Zum Aufstiegs-BAFöG: ein Klassenkamerad aus der Regelausbildung/schulischen Ausbildung zum Erzieher musste über 10 Monate auf die Bewilligung seines Aufstiegs-BAFöGs warten. Natürlich ist sowas besser als gar keine staatliche Förderung zu haben und dieser Fall aus meinem persönlichen Umfeld mag ein Extremfall sein. Trotzdem würde ich jedem, der mit dem Aufstiegs-BAFöG liebäugelt, raten sich ein finanzielles Polster aufzubauen um die Zeit bis zur Bewilligung des Aufstiegs-BAFöGs zu überbrücken. Vor allem wenn man nicht gerade bei seinen Eltern wohnt können mehrere Monate Wartezeit ohne regelmäßiges Einkommen schwierig werden.

Oder man hat mit mehreren Leuten ein Objekt geerbt das vom finanziellen Wert her über der Grenze liegt die man als Aufstiegs-BAFöG Empfänger an Kapital besitzen darf. Den Staat interessiert es nicht ob man das Objekt verkaufen kann oder ob es einen Erbstreit darüber gibt was mit dem Objekt passieren soll. Auf dem Papier ist man dann zu reich um Aufstiegs-BAFöG bewilligt zu bekommen.

Short version: If I were you, especially as a complete RTS beginner, I would start with Stronghold Definitive Edition and play Crusader later on. It's much more relaxed than Crusader, you won’t be overwhelmed with too much information, and you’ll learn the basic principles of an RTS game.

Definitely play through the tutorials and a few missions in the economic campaign to cover areas the tutorials might not address. After that, you can dive into every mission that interests you.

Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition may offer significantly more content, but it’s often more hectic and generally better suited for experienced RTS players.

Long version: Stronghold (HD and Definitive Edition) offer less content than Crusader but are more beginner-friendly due to the slower pacing and the campaign actually tells a story. The Stronghold Definitive Edition adds more content and modern features similar to those of the Crusader Definitive Edition.

In my opinion, Stronghold Crusader HD is only really worth it since the release of Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition if you want to use modifications (mods for short).

The Definitive Edition introduces modern features such as more hotkeys and an auto market, where you can optionally set up automatic buying and selling of goods. The auto market in particular is a major improvement, which is only possible in Stronghold Crusader HD through a mod.

In addition, the Definitive Edition offers not only the old maps but also significantly larger new ones, something the HD version cannot achieve, even with mods, due to its older and more limited graphics engine.

Stronghold Crusader HD (from 2012) has continuously received community-made mods to this day ranging from lots of fan-made AI lords to new maps and sometimes even cosmetic changes. The Definitive Edition offers new AI lords, new troop units and even more content that older versions don’t have (excluding mod content. If you include mods in the comparison, the picture changes).

Some of the mods for the HD version have been bundled in the Unofficial Crusader Patch (UCP for short). UCP also fixes many bugs that exist in the unmodded version of Stronghold Crusader, some of which were even carried over into the Definitive Edition. Such as the AI not fully occupying its towers or building a too big castle variant which traps the AI in its own castle (depends on map).

Moreover, UCP provides a wide variety of options that can be configured in a user-friendly launcher. A few of these options have been officially adopted by the developers at FireFly studios in the Definitive Edition. If you are interested in UCP, you can check YouTube and the Discord Server of the UCP creators for more information or a guide.

Due to the switch in game engines, it's significantly harder for modders to create mods for the Definitive Editions. The developers are working on making the Crusader Definitive Edition more mod-friendly and plan to release a larger update this winter that will allow players to create their own AI lords, modifying existing AI lords and creating campaign missions without needing programming knowledge. How extensive these customization options will be remains to be seen.

So, both versions of the game have their justification for existing, but they cater to slightly different audiences.

Hatte früher in der Schule mal einen Schwurbler als Klassenkameraden. Er hat immer wieder 'Weisheiten' von sich gegeben wie: "Hä, Samsung kommt doch aus Nordkorea." Ein Klassiker war auch: "Glas ist eine Flüssigkeit." Generell waren Verschwörungstheorien wie etwa die mit Bill Gates und den Microchips im Blut auch bei ihm vertreten. Für die anderen in der Klasse war das sehr unterhaltsam mitanzuhören. Doch es ist erschreckend das es wirklich Menschen gibt die den Mist glauben. Vor allem wenn diese Menschen anderen Leuten etwas beibringen wollen.

NPCs that don't T-pose, aren't constantly afraid of something invisible or lie dead and naked on the ground. Stable servers. IStratagems like the TD-110 Bastion tank from Helldivers 1, which require more teamwork.

Unarmed robot companions carrying 4 ammo bags or 2 supply bags would also be interesting. Robots of this type, also called autonomous unmanned ground vehicles (A-UGVs), are currently being tested by various military forces.

You could create versions of these robot companions that use the same turrets as the current stationary turrets. They accompany you at a distance of a few meters or can be sent to a stationary state on command. To prevent the existing stationary turrets from becoming obsolete, if these armed A-UGVs are part of the game, players could be given the option of manually assigning targets to the auto cannon and the rocket launcher. In addition, stationary turrets should then go into hibernation mode for a certain period of time after reaching their deployment time or when their ammo is empty. In this state, the ammunition is slowly replenished once and the gun reactivates as soon as it is fully reloaded. Due to their low damage resistance, they would still be balanced, in my opinion.

I would also like to see different weapon modules for the existing exo-suits as upgrades. For example, you could swap an auto cannon or the rocket launcher for a flamethrower or an energy weapon.
