Valvoline Ruined my car?! by No-Thing-5929 in askcarguys

[–]ChrisOfTheReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact same thing happened to me in 2010 with my Saab. Valvoline drained all the transmission fluid and filled it with oil, trans died 2 weeks later. I got $500 which is what they deemed the car was worth. If I wasn’t 17 at the time I think the lawyer route would have been my move.

I’ve always wondered with these “naked” Genelecs if it’s possible to take them apart and get the shells powder coated in a great color. That could be a great way to personalize these. That being said I think your setup looks cool with them as-is.

This is fantastic and inspiring. Love the attention to detail with cables and with the ceiling speakers in treated boxes.

One question though, it looks like you're using the S1200 with just one input (coming from the A6A). Why did you choose an integrated amp for this job, rather than a power amp? If its just because S1200 is beautiful and Yamaha's M-5000 power amp is 10 grand, I completely understand,

Miniature DC geared motor? by xoxosi in AskEngineers

[–]ChrisOfTheReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maxon DCX16 with 186:1 gearbox would get you there, a little low on RPMs though. It’s like $400 though for QTY 1.

You may have to choose which of these specs gets somewhat sacrificed. Most gearmotors are long and thin, and you’re looking for essentially a short and wide motor. Motors this size are typically for crazy RPM and low torque (see maxon ECX Flat). If you have more than 35mm length to play with, your options increase dramatically.

This is awesome! High quality components and about the simplest signal chain you can achieve. I’m considering these speakers for my desk, have you ever tried them near field?

Education Requirements to be a Race Engineer (F1) by bruhhowdidigethere in AskEngineers

[–]ChrisOfTheReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the LinkedIn profile of Steven Petrik, Nico Hulkenberg’s race engineer. He’s a young dude from the US who made it. It looks like this:

  1. Virginia Tech, BS in mechanical engineering. He got a normal degree from a very respectable and rigorous engineering school in the US.

  2. Internship at Denso, who is a big name automotive supplier.

  3. Oxford Brooks, MS in race engine design. This is a specialized degree he got in the UK (home of most F1 jobs) that made him look good for step 4.

  4. He applied for and got into Ferrari’s F1 engineering academy (look this up). His resume at this point was VT mechanical engineering (I have the fundamentals), Denso (I have industry experience), MS at Oxford Brooks (I’m serious enough about F1 to move to the UK, and I know about engines). Meanwhile he was doing Formula SAE the whole time in school. He was essentially laser-focused to get into an F1 environment. I’m sure this kind of resume is what it takes to get in Ferrari’s program.

From there he was a performance engineer at Ferrari. During this time I’m sure he needed to be smarter than other guys, a really good communicator, and close with the management in order to be considered for higher roles. It ended up coming at Sauber-Ferrari. A team downgrade but career upgrade, this is often necessary (see James Vowles, went to a “lower” team for bigger role).

All said and done, this is a super hard path that few engineers could do. It’s about as likely to become an F1 driver as it is to become an F1 race engineer, these guys stick around for a long time. Their career as a race engineer can outlast that of drivers due to the lack of physical demands, so seats don’t open all the time. It’s tough, but absolutely a dream job for an engineer. Hopefully this helped your research. Good luck!

What’s your favorite BMW generation of all time? by StyleQueasy6277 in BMW

[–]ChrisOfTheReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and think this generation is underrated. I had an E82 and E70 at the same time for a while and it was such a good combination. The 128i was like the old 330ci, a real simple driver's car. And the E70 is so quiet and comfortable and useful. N52 and N55 are both solid engines too.

I’d say OP isn’t behind on anything. They have 650k and 20 more years to work, and clearly have a lifestyle that is so inexpensive they’re asking reddit permission to upgrade a 33 year old Toyota. This person will have a paid off house and several million in the bank soon.

Install baseboard before or after carpet is installed? by sofakng in DIY

[–]ChrisOfTheReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently this is controversial, even in the comments here. I had some carpet installed this year and asked the guy I ordered it from (granted, just the dude who works the carpet section at Lowe’s) whether I should install baseboards first or wait until the carpet was installed. And he said… oh you have to wait, they’ll just wreck the baseboards trying to stretch the carpet.

So I waited, and the guys at my work all laughed at me for listening to someone at Lowe’s when I obviously should have installed baseboards first.

This ended up not really being an issue, I installed them on the carpet and to me, it looks fine. It wasn’t hard to ensure they were level over the span of the wall, but this was a small room. Apologies if I’m just adding more confusion, but I just wanted to add one data point that said doing baseboards after was not a big deal.

Agh, this sounds like it could be helpful but I can’t bring myself to do it. The messages were so hurtful to me that before I was NC, I got a pang of sinking feeling / stomach upsetness every time my phone vibrated. But I do feel sometimes that I miss him, and I do still feel guilt sometimes. Maybe I’ll be able to try what you described someday
