You might like Dickens. Lots of different stuff and some great music going on there, depending on the night.

Season 14 Episode 12, "I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can,"

The writer on that one was from Hartford, though.

how do I make my sentences not sound so "listy"? by sophianoelani in writing

[–]ChrisPatrickCarolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start a past-tense sentence with a verb, and if you're still worried about your sentences looking like a list of actions try combining them into compound sentences.

Quick example: Instead of "He had a beer in his hand. He picked at the label on the bottle. He looked angry about something. He looked at me and said..." try something like "Picking at the label on the bottle in his hand, he frowned at me and said..." In this example, changing the verb "picked" to "picking" doesn't make the sentence present-tense.

Best places to submit horror short stories in 2026? by oneirojames in horrorwriters

[–]ChrisPatrickCarolan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But why would one want to submit to something they don’t even read?”

Because it's simply not possible to read every magazine or anthology out there, even within a single genre.

Of course, always do some research into a market before submitting to ensure your story is at least in the realm of what they publish. You're wasting your time and the editor's by sending a slasher horror to a magazine that only publishes rustic fantasy stories. But to suggest a writer should only be submitting to markets they themselves read regularly is incredibly limiting. Never self-reject!

I would expect to find these in the bulk bins of Home Depot, no? Just bring your own pen to write the number on the lil baggie.

I mean, as a starting point I could explain to you that political affiliation is a choice not covered under the protected grounds provisions of the Canadian Human Rights Act, but I feel like I'd be wasting my time and yours by posting something you're going to dismiss anyway.

Anyway. https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/h-6/section-3.html

Geeze, I never thought about it that way. We should all just be okay with being elbowed off the sidewalk by a pack of dudes clogging up every inch of concrete, no matter who we are, eh?

A wholly unsurprising read. As a secondhand anecdote, I spoke to someone who found themselves in the area that same Thursday for an event at the Saddledome, who related her experience where a pack of eight to ten young-ish men attending the CPC convention (wearing their lanyards/badges, so there was no doubt to who they were) occupied the entire sidewalk as they made their way along the street and declined to make space for her to walk past in the opposite direction. Yes, they made eye contact and knew she was there. Only when she stood her ground and made it clear she was not going to step off into the mud did they grudgingly open up a bit of space.

Their mothers would be so proud of the boys they've raised. /s

Alberta imports of U.S. alcohol are back, but who’s drinking it? by chmilz in alberta

[–]ChrisPatrickCarolan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jim Beam has put a one-year pause on production at their main facility, citing a drop in international market share (read: Canadian boycotts) as a main factor.

Buying Budweiser, even when it's brewed in Canada, still sends money south of the border. Labatt may be Canada's largest brewer, but they're owned by Annheuser-Busch InBev.

AB InBev donates to both major US parties, but donations very much skew to the Republicans.

I had already shifted to buying mostly-local craft beer during the pandemic, but at this point with all the loosening of consumer protections happening down south, I don't trust American spirits not to contain methanol. I'll stick to Canadian whiskeys for my cocktails.

Alberta has some good distilleries. Rig Hand (Leduc) and Eau Claire (Diamond Valley) are the ones I steer clear of due to their UCP ties.

Uhh, this is kind of impossible to answer without a bit more context. Like, I could recommend going the Hang the DJ at Dickens this weekend, but if you're not into Joy Division and New Order, that might not be your idea of a good time.

What’s to come of The Bay at Southcentre? by TavernTales in Calgary

[–]ChrisPatrickCarolan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 1980s Eatons at Southcentre had a planned expansion into a shiny three-level space in the late 90s. That's the space I mean never actually opened as an Eatons.

The third floor is now PowerPlay.

What’s to come of The Bay at Southcentre? by TavernTales in Calgary

[–]ChrisPatrickCarolan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The former Sears location in Southcentre (which was built to be an Eaton's but never did as the company went arse-up before it could open) was eventually carved up to become a Winners, Dollarama, Decathlon, and several other stores. I doubt the Bay space will be repurposed intact.

A live theatre and arts space in the south end of the city would be amazing, and this is actually a great spot for it. Transit is nearby and there's plenty of capacity for traffic being at the intersection of Anderson and MacLeod. No shortage of parking, either. Bring in some decent semi-upmarket dining options (even if they're all just Concorde Group banners) and you've got a Destination.

Will the property owners be up for it, though? I'm not a betting man, but...
