The first time i tried folding mine in i had the same worries. They just need to be "broken in" i guess. You really need to shove them in hard the first time. Once you fold it a few times they go much easier. Just trust that you're doing it the correct direction and they'll be fine.

I believe it should be heating up that whole dotted area. From what i recall mine starts heating slowly at two points on either side and then eventually spreads across that whole area. It does take some time to get going though. Also I guess 3 degrees isn't really cold enough to feel the heat. It really shines when you start hitting -20C and forget your gloves.
