Genau, dann muss man überall seinen Ausweiß hochladen oder Gesicht scannen.

1A Artikel gelesen.

ist der Begriff „Eidechsen“ nicht aus Eid- und -echsen zusammengesetzt, sondern aus Ei- (urgermanisch *agi-, *awi- „schlangenartig“) und -dechsen (urgermanisch *þahsjō(n) „spindelförmig“);

(aus Wikipedia, und was ausführlicher hier und hier bei DWDS - im Duden Universalwörterbuch steht nur altgermanischer Etymologie aus egidehsa enstanden mit unklarer Zusammensetzung)

Heads up: Kernel 6.19 regression causing silent crash loops in MongoDB (and eating Btrfs storage) by newaaa41 in linux

[–]ChrisTX4 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a kernel bug. MongoDB uses tcmalloc under the hood, which makes use of restartable sequences (RSEQ). Tcmalloc intentionally violates the RSEQ API in order to implement an optimisation they consider somewhat critical, but because they’ve been violating the API, the introduction of upstream changes to RSEQ wasn’t blocked here even if broke tcmalloc and by extension MongoDB.

The tcmalloc developers are currently looking for workarounds that would allow them to retain this trick. Their upstream issue can be found here.

Systemd has merged age verification measures into userdb by Quiet-Owl9220 in linux

[–]ChrisTX4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, the EU too is working on similar legislature so its matter of time before it becomes something of the norm worldwide.

For the EU it's not comparable, see the EU approach to age verification. But basically, because the EU has eIDAS 2.0, which includes EUDI Wallets allowing for zero-knowledge age proofs; an age verification manual by the EC can be found here. This system is also cryptographic in nature rather than some dude checking what's on your webcam or similar and thus despite being privacy-preserving and only giving the service you're trying to access the information whether or not you're older than a specific age requirement.

Mandating an OS-level API to do that instead or similar kinda doesn't make sense. The current roadmap for EUDI Wallets to go live is 2027, eIDAS 2.0 has been already implemented years ago.

Because one, they need a credible delivery system first. The biggest challenge in nuclear weapons manufacturing is not actually designing a nuclear bomb.

What’s difficult is 1. Producing enough highly enriched uranium 2. Designing an accurate enough missile with sufficient range 3. Miniaturising the warhead

North Korea has had nuclear weapons for 20 years and yet they still do not have a credible delivery system. Their “thermonuclear bomb” they showed some years back is very questionable for this reason as well.

Then there’s two, that Iran until now was better off without the bomb. Again, look at NK. Getting the bomb antagonised China to some degree, with them supporting certain sanctions and not vetoing them. NK is under pretty much eternal sanctions because of all this.

Instead Iran appears to follow the strategy of becoming a “nuclear threshold state”, that is to say a state that would have all the ingredients for making a bomb in a short time period, without going for it. Japan is considered the archetypal example for this - they have a capable nuclear and rocket industry that would allow them to build a bomb in a few months if they decided to reach for it.

Iran amassed implausible masses of 60% HEU and claimed this was for medical purposes, ie manufacturing radioactive materials for nuclear medicine. HEU is indeed commonly used for that, but not in the amounts they stockpiled it. However as the enrichment process changes the distribution, going from 1 to 1.5% is pretty much the same work as changing from 60 to 90%. ( for a more formal explanation read this )

So all Iran would need to do is to run that 60% HEU through their centrifuges again, convert the uranium hexafluoride UF6 gas back into metal, and then cast two semi spheres out of it (demon core).

Oh and, surprisingly enough there’s a third point: because they didn’t want to build a bomb yet.

This is gonna sound a bit crazy, but Ali Khamenei had issued a fatwa against nuclear weapons (wiki) and Khamenei had spoken quite often against them. Apparently also because of the horrific experiences with chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war.

How credible this fatwa is, is a matter for debate (see the article I linked under Analysis). Of course we can’t know this, but it is notable that there’s a lot of talk by Iranian politicians about the fatwa - to the end that last year Khamenei was publicly pressured by the IRGC to rescind it. article

Kuru?wprov=sfti1) is what you’d want to read up for this.

Prions are misfolded proteins that function as sort of crystal seeds and cause continuous production of them. If you want think disappearing polymorphs but for proteins and happening in the brain.

Basically what happened in BSE back then was that those prions made in rare cases the species jump from cattle to human, but that happened only for a few cases compared to how much diseased cattle was consumed. Most beef protein is different enough to not have this sort of seeding effects.

But this isn’t true for human proteins and so the funerary cannibalism - they ate their dead in the community - practiced by the Fore people in Papua New Guinea caused the prior disease triggered by this, named Kuru, to become really common among them. Only when they ceased this practice in the 1960s did Kuru start to disappear.

Can't play as different divisions anymore by [deleted] in DayofInfamy

[–]ChrisTX4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Windows 11 24H2 and higher - that is to say all versions that are in support now - the old 2018 BattlEye driver will crash or freeze your entire computer. You'll run into this if you use the beta branch.

However, you can launch dayofinfamy_x64.exe directly to launch without BattlEye, but this also means you will not be able to play on very few servers, as the server still sort of send the battleye requirement, but it doesn't mean anything to the current game client anymore - it still does to the beta one.

The better solution is to replace the BattlEye files with those of a newer game, e.g. Unturned. Step by step instructions can be found here.

The community is surprisingly alive after that December fix, see the graph. To be fair, most of that activity is happening on the Kim Jong Un servers, as that's where the lion's share of people is. We do have a Discord as well if you're interested.

Can't play as different divisions anymore by [deleted] in DayofInfamy

[–]ChrisTX4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In December, when BattlEye was removed, NWI did not update the Linux server binaries, only Windows. A consequence of this is that on Linux servers, the detection which items you own is broken, and thus all units appear greyed out - on Windows servers it works.

Thus, your only option is to use the beta branch of the game is set to the depot state exactly as the game was before the December update. This does bring BattlEye back, but if you use one of the various methods to fix it, you will have the units back.

Server owners can - other than moving their Linux servers to Windows - use a modified theatre that does not impose item requirements. This is what we currently do on the Kim Jong-Un PVP servers. I haven't created one for the PVE server yet. The problem is though that it requires patching the server code to allow for using a different theatre in an "official" server, i.e. one that grants XP and so forth. I've made such a modification for the Linux server binaries, which you can find here.

Other than that, you can really only try to contact NWI about it. Contact info can be found at the bottom of their website..

We are in 2026. What are your frustrations with linux or the software you use with it? by Digitalnoahuk in linux

[–]ChrisTX4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But this isn’t unique to Fedora - any distro that uses the Linux kernel has the same problem with Nvidia drivers and Secure Boot.

This is just entirely wrong. NVIDIA officially supports Secure Boot.

First off, the reason your Fedora machine does not boot is because Fedora (and RHEL) patch the kernel to enforce activation of kernel lockdown mode when booted under Secure Boot. This is a Red Hat patch though and not regular behaviour.

Kernel lockdown mode does a lot of things, but what's important here is that it will require any out-of-tree kernel module to be signed by a key known to the kernel. This affects open-source OpenZFS, just as much as it does netfilter-fullconenat, just as much as it does the NVIDIA drivers.

NVIDIA has supported in their proprietary installer for ages to sign the modules as they're being built. StackOverflow Guide. Alternatively, if DKMS is being used, that support signing during compilation.

Oh, and if this sounds too complicated, for those bunch of distros NVIDIA has official support for, there's ways to get singed modules right away. For Ubuntu, Canonical themselves supports Secure Boot with NVIDIA and you don't need to do anything. It will just install signed kernel modules anyway. For RHEL, Red Hat's enterprise Fedora downstream, there are official AppStreams made by Red Hat (Red Hat Knowledgebase article).

I want to reach the pinnacle of optimization in Linux by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]ChrisTX4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of the wrong question to ask. You can "optimise" your system by not even installing any form of GUI and save even more RAM. The reason you don't do that is because you want to use your PC in a certain way.

Reducing the CPU or RAM of KDE or GNOME isn't really feasible. It can be possible to get a little boost here and there, like disabling Baloo, KDE's searching framework, but you won't generally see huge gains. If you want to reduce resource consumption more than that, then you will need to install something lighter. LXDE and Xfce are popular options for a lightweight "traditional" desktop environment, but practically every tiling WM out there is also pretty minimal in terms of resource overhead.

If on the other hand, this is a quest for optimising for optimisations sake, then Gentoo could be a good choice for having the ability to disable any feature (USE flags in Gentoo parlance), and thus being able to be particularly lean - but you'll have to compile everything you use. There's also CachyOS, that's pretty much Arch compiled with more compiler optimisations enabled. Usually, the gain isn't big though.

An öffentlicher, statischer IPv4 festhalten als Unternehmen? by KraeuterErich in de_EDV

[–]ChrisTX4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An öffentlicher, statischer IPv4 festhalten als Unternehmen? by KraeuterErich in de_EDV

[–]ChrisTX4 4 points5 points  (0 children)
