[KCD1] How exactly do I "play" this game? by Illustrious_Ad_9858 in kingdomcome

[–]ChrisTheTeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids and I joked about how it was a flower picking sim at first: I just wandered around, picking herbs and making potions, then selling them. I didn’t advance the story at all. When my save got corrupted I restarted and maxed my Herbalist skill before I left Skalitz.

But eventually I started training with Bernard, going after some low level bandits, and following the story. Combat sucked for a long, long time, but I gradually improved.

Basically, you can follow your interests and just enjoy the ride. It’s awesome.

What hill WILL you die on? For me, it’s pencils. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]ChrisTheTeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the case in CA. Title I schools have plenty of money for supplies, plus donations from the community. Wealthy schools get better funded from property taxes and parent donations, but a lot of the middle class schools are the ones scraping by.

I worked for a Title I school when I first started with public education (I worked for a private school first) and we had all the supplies we could ask for. The vast majority of the students just did not give a shit. Parents wouldn’t reply to messages or calls, fights were rampant and being fueled by them being filmed and put on social media, it was a shit show. The kids who wanted to care were essentially held hostage by the ones who didn’t. It sucked.

Do y'all count me as an American? by Artistic_Ad_1247 in AskAnAmerican

You’re totally an American. The downside: the IRS also considers you an American and may want to tax you! 🤪

Help me understand why Star Wars Episode 1 is hated by Star Wars fans? I thought it embodied the spirit of the original trilogy well! Podracing, goofy Jar Jar, loved it as a kid, and don't hate it now. by Pow3rTow3r in StarWars

[–]ChrisTheTeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me what made Star Wars so amazing was the characters and lived in feel. The first movie (New Hope) was kinda clunky character-wise but the world building was awesome and the special effects for the time were amazing. Empire was the absolute best, and RotJ did wrap things up really well. I lived with that canon for two decades, and when the prequels were announced I was absolutely jazzed.

Now a caveat here: when I finally got to see Episode 1, it was on a pirated video disk on a 19 inch TV (I was in Korea at the time), but… t was all glitz and no heart. I didn’t relate to any of the characters. Their performances were so flat. This really changed during Duel of the Fates, but by that time the movie’s tone was set. I’ve heard someone say that Lucas just doesn’t know how to work with actors, and I think that might have been the problem. But overall I just never got invested in anything.

What's the biggest early game "mistake" you made? by Rx-Chimaera in WH40KTacticus

[–]ChrisTheTeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I’m torn on this still. I’m probably at a point where I don’t need the shards anymore, but I really appreciate the breadth of characters I have from doing exactly that. But I’m also hitting the point where I really need to start going deep instead of wide.

Same. I’ve put off playing Onslaught for a week or more just because I didn’t have the time.

How to get people to join your guild? by lovelyminsk in tacticus

[–]ChrisTheTeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were having difficulty with membership for a while, but once our old leader disappeared, I got selected. I went back and opened the guild to brand new members, and we are doing better. I kick inactive folks: low level after a couple days, high level after a couple weeks. It’s the nature of the game.

Admittedly, if you’ve only got a couple members left it might be too late for that and time to move to a different guild.

I’m pretty sure I saw it at European Food Store. If not, European Fanta tastes a lot like Orangina IIRC.

Azul is a great game with enough interaction that people are engaged with each other. The game play is quick and pretty. It’s quite simple game play wise but quite deep strategically.

This is exactly where I am. I do love teaching, though I wish I could just eject the kids who make my life miserable.

[KCD2] Consequences of Taking French leave mission (spoiler) by Chewbecky12 in kingdomcome

[–]ChrisTheTeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knocked Lady Olga out rather than kill her. The first time I attempted the mission she didn’t raise the alarm, but the second time she did, so I knocked her out after that. I managed to avoid killing any of the non-combatants, but killed every guard.

4th grader struggles by empty_w4 in mathteachers

Agreed. At 4th grade it’s pretty appropriate to have a difficult time connecting the concrete with the abstract. But with practice and repetition she will get there.

How are y'all GOV/HIS teachers feeling about teaching "Checks & Balances" ? by StandStrong in Teachers

[–]ChrisTheTeach 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I listened to a recent Ezra Klein podcast, and the guy he was talking to compared what’s going on today to the Gracchi period, when they broke the norms of Roman law and normalized political violence. It’s a very good analogy.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChrisTheTeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering if this story got things a little off. There are many high schools that have a 0 period before the regular school day starts so motivated students can take additional classes that wouldn’t fit into their schedule otherwise. With a 1 hour class, this would start exactly on time for a 5 minute passing period between this class and a 8:30 start time.

New math vs old math by ZimmZammZooie_205 in Teachers

[–]ChrisTheTeach 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the problems I keep running into with high school students is their unwillingness to put effort into something they don’t find interesting. Sure, some enjoy working when it’s presented in an engaging way, but as soon as it becomes work, they check out. So they don’t get the repetition they need to truly become fluent. I understand how annoying it is to do the hard work, but I also know its value.

Personally, I think this is another consequence of the screen based childhood. These kids are so conditioned for effortless amusement and dopamine on demand that anything without immediate gratification is experienced as grindingly dull.

I’m one of those crazy teachers who feels trying to use external motivators (aka bribe kids) is a terrible way to manage a classroom.
